Still, it•1 a 11fe bet that millions will be ~gh ina Wednesday niabt when Skelton, alias Freddie the Freeloader. hosts Clown Alley-.a salute to the world qt the Bia Top buffoons. Bobby Kay served u chief technical advisor for 1he CBS . I 0 PM Special, which features se~cn guest stars. Joinina them will be eight professional circus clowns (includina Kay) . In his job u consultant, Kay helped put to- aethcr 43 comic Mbiu" Of routines. which were then trimmed and combined into seven acts. one for each ,uat 11,\r. "One of the circus clowns was usigned to each of the sue-ts." explains tuy. "We aot on st.aae and did the bit. Then the sues• star got up and did his version of what he had seen. addina his own special ftait. And by the way. each one of the auau has his own •sieci-1 make-up created just for this show." After some yean in vaudeville and burlesque, he joined the circus and hu played with mosl of the bi1-1ime tent shows. Currently he's with Rina· lina Bros.. and has allO been in several circus movies. Kay tells an interalina story about the origin of the title of the lhow~lown alley. "It's an old circus term . . . came about in the days w~n performer• all p1hered in one tent to put on costumes and make-up-cowboys on the outside (their outfits were considered the most durable. in cue of bad weather), and the clowns in the mid- dat. When the clowns patted the white powder on their faces. clouds of it drifted all over the other performers' costumes. The clowns were told to ao put their make-up on. out in the alley!" T"9dition playa a bi& role in clown-comedy routine$, too. While there are many possible varia· tions, ma.t clowns stick to ten basic bits, ac- cordina to Kay. For instance, there's the "big and little bit": a clown tr1ea to light a giiantic ftre- cracker. Once, twice, three times, but it ftzzlcs. On the third try, another clown tics a string of little f\recracters to the first clown's coattails, and liahts them. They ao off. If it doesn't sound very funny in the tellin1t. very few comic routines do. It's all the way it'~ done. And if you think a clown gets laughs by simply liahtina a firecracker. or turnina a somcr- sauh. just try it! "When I started in the circus. all · the younger clowns. by tradition. watched and learned rrom the oldcc ones," Kay reminiacea. "Then one day you try it on your own--the first time I did. then wasn't so much as a smile. Later on. I would get maybe a few chpckles ... I was afraid 10 ao all 1he way. ao bold.'' Kay pauses ... ··1 tiaure it took about 20 yean to be a real clown.'' Still, no matter how expert he is. a clown fa~ the challenae of creating Jauahter. every time he aoes before a crowd. Skelton once said that the clown's .secret weapon is his terror of the Joe Schrnoos who sit and dare him to make them laugh. Kay .,rces ... You learn to upect anythina- maybe it's a aood audience ... maybe hecklen . . . maybe those unsmiling faces. But you have to try to act to them-I work like a stone dropped into a pool. I aim toward maybe I 2 people. pt them laughina. act the vibrations goina. Then it spreads-20 more. Pretty soon. maybe 500 ~ pie arc laughina. That's the reward. The maiter of mike-up is a serious one. "II IJlaY take a clown two yean to develop just the right face," 11ys Bobby, , .. "and clown make-up isn't copyriJhted. But clowns ao by an unwritten rule that no one of them knowinaJy copies an· other's make-up or QO&tumc ... And whO should know the traditions of the circus better than tuy: For true 10 the storybook stereotype. he ran away to join the circus when he WIS a boy. ''Of course. Skelton may wear a wig, or big shoes. bu1 he's what's called a carpet clown--he's the human clown-you identify with him--like Chaplin. "That's what rd like to be." Kay concludes. ~A aood carpet clown. Only this time I don't think it'lt take twenty years." -Marian Dem 9 ' t.. Are You Rudy for Inv..,.?
