In 195t she was foond on the ro- ontinating council of the Business and PNfeaiooal Wome11's Club and also aened it as state membership c)Airmlo and state legislative chair- man. Culrently a member of Laguna Beadl'• Planning Commission. she has dabbled with politics and ran for tbe dty council twice. "Ilalt both times," she said with her typical good nature. Her defeat did: JlllOI stop her enthusiasm for 9l!nb, and frieftas have been known to ask, "Wben are you going to ft!ltire trom n!ltirement?" The key tu Miss Whittlesey's na· ture seems to be a boundless and genuine affection and empathy for her fell ow mao, unusual commod· ities in this skeptical age. An example is the five years she served as girls' vice principal of J<>rdan Higb Sdloof in Watts. During this time1 she came illto contact with one litUe 13-year-old roe<! who was earning her pin JilQn· ey running a house Of prostitution while her parents were at work. The typical person might throw bis hands up in the air and give the girl up for "lost." As the reader must have noticed by now, Miss Whittlesey is not a typical person. When the girl re- turned from juvenile ball, she sud· deniy found herself with a job. in the school office, under the all~ ing eyes of Miss Whittlesey. Beiore the teen-ager knew it, she was mysteriously a member of numerous clubs, committees and councils, where her "natural lead· enhip abilities were put to a more productive ~e." What d'o you know -upon graduation she was selected as an Aphebian, a title given to the most outstanding girl in the class. Many years later the vice-prin· cipal and the girl accldentally met on the street. "Oh, '9fiss Whittlesey, l'm so happy to see you. rve wanted to tell you many times what's became Of me. I'm happily married and have Coor W'O'llderful children, and it's all thanks to you." Wlbile serving as vice principal, Miss Whittlesey decided to broaden her horizons by doing a short stint in the Army. "To see what it was like," she explained sunnily. "I thought teach· ers are so narrow minded. They need to try new experiences. "I served for six weeks in boot camp and finished just when the Woman's Auxiliary Army became the W ACs." she recalled. Since she accomplished her pur· pose therei "finding out what the educa tiona training ill the Army was," she decided to move onto Douglas Aircraft, where having eamed a certificate from Cal Tech, she worked as an aircraft drafts· man. Later, due to pressures from the ~wers that were, she returned from her leave Of absence to the educational whirl. A woman who would rather buiM houses than clean them, Miss Whit· Uesey has never married and has used this fact on a number of oc• casions to demonstrate her pleasant sense of hum'Or. Not long ago she attended a teachers' reunion. The others in· troduced their spouses and it soon became her turn. She stood up and said, "My husband was killed dur· ing World War I, but I never met him." Laughingly she explaios her sin· gfe status by saying, "After the war there was a shortage of men, so I figured rd lea~ the men to the women who NEEDED them. (S..
