Police found ranger Eugene Tamburelli back at the city yard on Placentia Avenue minutes after witnesses diale~ 911 to re- port that a four-wheel drive park veh icle ran someone over. "He said he had no idea he had hit anything unusual, and certainly not a person," according to Costa Mesa police Sgt. Tom Win1ers. 'He (tt1~ ranger) c11d~·t !1y;k like he f.::~ en kri~·.v what had happen~d. He had his windows up and he iust kept going.' -TOM WU.COX w~nes:; said Share Our Selves volunteer Karen McGlinn after hearing the news. McGlinn said Gayes has been a familiar and welcome face around SOS for years. he looks menacing because of his size, but he's not a threat. He's really very reclusive and gontle." Some residents in the 600 block of Wilson Street said to have grown attached to the ro- bust man who has been living in the park across from their homes for the past several years. Tom Wilcox, a resident who witnessed the scene, said he re- fers to Gayes as "the sleeper -. because all he does is sleep." And according to Wilcox, Gayes favorite place to sleep was on a grassy knoll near the edge of the park just off Wilson Street -the very spol where he was run over. Meanwhile, Greg Gayes, a 41· year-old transient, was flown by helicopter to Western Medical Center with a fractured skull, broken leg and back injuries. "Oh my gos~, that's terrible," "He's a reaJ reflection of the mentally ill homeless who live on the streets," she said. "And he's really a decent person. "He's always sca red pe.oplc away because he's very large and Wilcox told police he saw the ranger's truck come up over the small hill, drive over Gayes, then over the curb, and continue head ing out of the park west on Wilson Street. He worried that his professors wouldn't understand, might not even take him back. "Hey, Randy! How you been?" I asked. "Uhm, not very well, Mr. Martin. My dad died Monday." . I told Randy I would try and let them know he was not just playing bookey. Oh me. I don't know what to say to people my own age when that happens, let alone a 20-ycar-old. Truth is, I hardly knew Terry Cicero. I knew Randy's grandfather, Saint Cicero, quite well and loved him dearly, as did everyone who was privileged to be his friend. And..Lknew R3ndy, had watched him-grow from a rotten little kid to a fine young man. Watched him become a good competitive sailor and a smallish but tough guard on the Harbor High football team. -Randy is now finding out just how tough he is, for there is no one else to handle the endless and painful detail that goes along with the death of a loved one. On the Coast Dick, You're Over Earty! In sailboat racing, the idea is to arrive at the starting line at the exact moment the gun goes orr. Reing over early incurs a severe penalty. I sailed with Dick Bluel for many years and can't remember a single time he crossed the line early. Except last Saturday. Dick Bluel was 66. You may not have known Dick personally, but if you watched television, you knew him. If you enjoyed "Bonanza" and a number of other series, you may have seen It is a lot of burden for a young man with no ' experience in such matters, but Randy was almost more concerned about the time he had to take off Dick's credits as a line producer. The program received approval Feb. S from the Coast Community College Board of Trustees. If the pilot study, which involves mem- bers or the 1992 OCC men's volleyball team, is successful, Wallace hopes the drug-testing plan can be extended to all 22 of the school's intercollegiate athletic programs. "There arc three aspects to this,'' said Wallace. "First, we, the members of the OCC athletic department, want to make our stand against drug usage by our athletes. . The men's volleyball team was ap- proached at random and unanimously vol- unteered to become Involved in the pro- aram. The first urinatysis testing for 11 differ- ent drugs, including alcohol and steroids, was conducted last week. The 14 members of the ~lleyball team will be tested at unannounced intervals three or four times during the course of the season. An athlete who tests positive for drug· or alcohol abuse will be referred to a S.H.A.R.E. counselor, who, after consult- ing with the student, will determine if pro- t.SsionaJ hctp is required. If so, it will be provided by the college. "A positive test doesn't make an athlete utligible," said Wallace. "We want to bltp that athlete get his or her life in oroer.
