For those who may have forgotten, it is the rare exercise of silting oomfort.t>ly with a bunch of people and kick.ins thinp around. OiscussiJta ideas and issues, maybe arguing a little. Sadly, this fane pastime is a dyin1 art in many quarten and age iroups. But lhanb to an energy machine named Anne Hopn·Shercshevs ky, good oonverutioo is alive and well among Costa Mesa's senior citizens. Un the Coast When she was only 60, Anne founded an organization caJled the Hospitality FolUlD-The purpose was simply to get together and talk, communicate with one another. Ten years la\er, the conversation is still JOing on. The Forum is held on the last Friday morning or every month. Official hours arc 9 until noon, but there's plenty o f Oexibility. When I got there Friday morning about IO, the converscrs had warmed up on immigration and health care and were just starting on the day's main topic, the new Costa Mesa Senior Center. The ll,000-square-root facility is now abuilding on the oomcr or 19th and Pomona and, naturally, there's a shortfall of funds for furnishings and equipment. "Some guy died and left $5,000 for the game room." Anne announced brightly. "Isn't that wonderful! Oops ... wcll, I didn't mean .... " There was laughter all around and Marie Maples commented: "Hey, we'll take it any way we can get it." Marie, who is a di.rector o r the non-profit corporation building the Senior Center, says there arc 19,000 senior ciiizens in Costa Mesa (i.e., 50 years or older). Trouble is, thcy·re hard to locate. .. We need to get in touch w11h each one and let them know what this Center will do for them and why they need to help," Marie told the Forum. "Even shu1-ins can help. if we can jusl reach them." ' One \\.lY the Center board hopes to identify Costa Mesa seniors 1s with a posl card going along with the water bills just being sent out. Though the mailing 1s not complete and 11 just started a week ago. 330 responses arc in alrea~ ~ong with lists from existing senior organizations in the cit)l~at~cans there arc only about 16,000 names to go. 'l·m concerned about the public's awareness of this new center. It's going to be a wonderful place and we need to create pride and excitement about it We ~ave to get people working on that. Tom Murphy of Mesa Verde v.as sitting in 1he big circle at the Hospitality Forum for the first time. "Al the mk of being put to work." he said, ''I'm concerned about the public's awareness of this new center. It's going to be a wonderful place and we need to create pride and excitement about Jt .
