that final voyage

A couple or weeks ~go 1 wrote a little tribute to Dick Bluel.
He's the well-known racing sailor ond screenwriter who
passed away a rew weeks ago, just after strapping himsetr
into the seat or a Uni ted flight to London and, he hoped, a
muhi-picture deal with investors over there.

On the
Coast
Dick seldom did anyt hing quietly or simply
while he was alive, and apparently he intends to
apply the same guidelines to his activities on the
other side.
Take the usually simple, quiet' act or being ·
able to say, as they do in Dick's business, "That's
a wrap." .
Dick died'on a Saturday. The following
Tuesd11y, his wife Shirley, had a call from Daniel
Fr~emnn Hospital near LAX, where Dick was
taken.
"Uhm, Mrs. Bluel," the caller said, "uhm,
we're sorry to bother you but, uhm, Mr. Bluel,
uhm, well, he's still here, you sec."
Shirley sighed and snid she would toke core of
---t-i~Shirtey-is-a very. s rong ody. She called the uneral directors
who were supposed to hove picked Dick up on Sunday. Whoops,
we forgot, they said.
The people in chnrgc jumped right on it and went to get Dick.
When they arrived, they found that the hospirnl wouldn't relense
him. Seems the death certificate wasn't in order; hadn't been
signed properly or some such thing.
Finally, that wns properly handled and Dick was taken whe rever
they take r>eople for cremation. Shirley wanted to schedule n date
for scattering Dick's ashes at sea, but she couldn't get a
commitment as to when he would be ready. "We do them one at
3 time," the funeral people told her, noting that there was quite n
waiting list.
But before Dick could even get in line, there was another glitch.
Seems that, for some reason or other, his birth certificate was

College received the go-ahead Monday lo build a
small new c:impus chapel, additional future
expansio n at the Christian campus is in jeopardy,
officials s:iid Tuesday. •
Unde~the slower-growth general plan
tentatively adopted by the City Council last
month, college officials say a new zoning
limitation for public and semi-public lands would
esse nti:illy freeze any growth on the 42-yenr-old
campu::., ''hich is adjacent to Costa Mesa City
Hall on F:iir Drive.
"ll "ill severely affecr the college.'' Business
Manager Herb Smith said. ''I'm sure it was more
of an O\.crsight of the effect, than the intent to
block any expansion." .
In the hopes th:it the new 3,128-square-foot
chapel won't be the last project for the non-profit
college, officials will be asking t~e City Council to
exempt them from the proposecPZoning limitations
in fa,or of an existing :igreeme~t tnal would allow
fu1urc growth. 1 In the next five )Cars. colleg¥icials figure
they will need to replace existing buildings and
increase the size of the campus by about 80,000
square feet.
The council is ~cheduled to take final action on

"The college is a unique entity," Smith said.
"Basically, it's the only one of its type in town:•
Such a drastic zoning limitation could also
threaten loans the college needed to help pay for
two new $3.7 million student opartment buildings
off Vanguard Way, designed to accommodate a
projected 10..ycar increase in the srudent body
from 940 to 1,200, Smith said.
If it hadn't been for his contact with city
planners with the chapel project, Smith said he
wouldn't have even been aware of the draslic
changes in store for the Assemblies or
God·3Cfili31cd college, formerly located in Los
Angeles and Pasadena before moving to the
former Costa Mesa World War II U.S. Army air
field in 1950.
Ironically. the new chapel will replace one of
the o ld Army barracks that now houses the
college financial aid building. The chapel plan was
unanimously approved by the city Planning
Commission Monday night.
The new chapel -designed to host small
weddings and funerals -will also have a dining
and kitchen area and dressing rooms.
The old 2,700-square·foot barracks building will
either be demolished or donated to the Historical
Society, Smith said. Construction is expected to
begin in late August.

brow-wiping 67-65 win over Lynwood in
the Southern California regional playoff
opener Tuesday at Ocean View High.
Geary, who hit two free throws with
37 seconds left after making a steal, was
the man down the stretch for the top-
seeded Monarchs, who advanced to
Thursday's regional semifinal at UC Ir-
vine's Bren Events Center.
Geary's steal, near the 10-sccond line,
prevented Lynwood (25·7) from going
for the last shot, after Mater Dei's
Marmet Williams unk a layup with 1:14
left to regain a 63-62 Monarchs' lead.
After Geary calmly sank both ends of
the ooe-and-one to make it 65-62, Lyn·
wood's Rodney Malloy drained a 3-
pointer to knot it with 0:21 left. .
Mater Dci worked for the last shot,
which came with five seconds remaining
on a 17-footer by Miles Simon. The baU,
howe~-er, bounded off the rim and the 6-
f oot-3 Geary swooped in untouched to
send 2,000 of the overflow crowd of
2,400 into a frenzy as time expired.
"I couldn't believe no one blocked me
out," said Geary, who finished with 15
points, six ass.ists and nine rebounds.
"We learned a valuable lesson to-
night," Gury said. "lf you don't come
to play, box out. ~d hit free throws. you
could be in trouble. There arc no more
easy games. I just didn't want to stop
here."

the Eagles broke it open in the second
quarter and raced to a 59-41 victory over
University High of San Diego in the first
round of the Southern Regionals here at
the University of San Diego.
The victory, very much like the start
or the state championship game a year
ago when the Eagles went on an euly
17-point rampage, sends Coach Tim
O'Bnen·~ Eagles mto Thursday's re-
gional semifinals at La Canada, where a
27-2 CIF lll-A Southern Section kingpm
awaits with 6-11 Richard Mandeville.
La Canada advanced with a 54-36 vic-
tory over La Jolla.
It was close for a while Tuesday night,
the Dons posting leads of 10.8 and 12-
11 before the Eagles took a first quarter
lead at 13-12 on Jeff Byrne's nice base-
line layup.
It was just the begmning. Tied at 17,
the Eagles suddenly took off and bid as
the Eagles blew the doors off the gym,
Byrne triggering 1t with a free throw,
with 5:40 left in the half, and high-
lighted by a trey from Russell King with
2:06 remaining.
Matt Fuerbringer, with 17 poin~. 7
rebounds, a block and an assist m the
first half, dropped IJl nine of his
counters in that run as the Eagles set-
tled for a 34-19 halftune margtn. ·

T here's a little shop in Costa Mesa
that seems much like any other
clothing store. It has eye-catching
displays, the latest fashions and ac·
cessories, courteous young clerks and
even an occasional sidewalk sale.
What sets Windjammer Fashions apart
is that it's also known as "Marketing
221AB." Windjammer is not only a store,
it's a for-credit class and ongoing lab ex·
periment for students at Orange Coast
College.
Windjammer is a unique college class.
It has no textbooks or exams. Students in
the course -there are 16 this semester
-attend class only one hour a week.
Most of the learning, as well as the
basis for grading, takes place in the op-
eration of the store. Students commit to
work five hours a week fo r two college
credits or 10 hours a week for 1hree
credits. Students can repeat the CSlursc
in order to work their way up to higher-
level jobs in the store, such as being a
buyer or being the student manager, a
paid posi1ion.

more realistic goal in re-
cent semesters has been to
break even. When the
store docs make a profit,
the money goes to the
OCC Associated Student
Body Fund. The store av-
e rages sales of about
S30,000 a semester.
Windjammer's faculty
adviser, Nancy DeMctro-
Jessce, has final say-so on
operating decisions. Dut
DeMetro-Jessee said that
because the program's em-
pha)is is on education, and •
not on profits, she tries to
give her students as much
freedom as possible.
"They work under' my
supervision, but if they
make a mistake, such as
buying )Omething that
tloc)n't sell, that's part of
the learning process,"
DeMctro·Jc)see said.
Windjammer students come from dif-
ferent fields of study al the college, and
they focus on aspecls or the store that
relate to their future aspirations -such
as accouniing majors who balance the
books and fashion merchandising stu-
dents who go on buying trips. But all
Windjammer students learn about each
major clement of fashion retailing, from
creating displays to working wi1h custom-
c rs to 1aking inven1ory. The students are
also taugh1 basic business skills, such as
how to write a resume or conduct a job
interview.

respects. Localed on the OCC campus, it
caters to the college's students and fac-
ulty. It shuts down between semesters
