Watching one's own child die must be life's worst experience. Jean has a picture of Cr?ig taken a few da)'S be fore his death. She has not looked a t it. "Maybe 1 never will," she sighs. ''It's in our safe-deposit box." There is, however, a posi tive aspect to Craig's death: Jean's activism in the cause of A1DS education. "When I first started learning about AIDS, I seriously thought about just moving way out in the country until it passed by." She didn't know that Craig was already carrying the virus. As she watched him die, Jean decided she should do something to help focus attention on the perils of the di case. It has become an obsession, but Jean admits that, if Craig hadn't died of AIDS, she would be as apathetic a the rest of us. "If he hadn't died or AIDS, I'd be jullt a:, uni nvolved as everybody else. It can't hit our house, right? Wrong." Jean feels the campaign to educate people about AIDS is bogged down in political correctness. "Evef)body has to be l>O careful we can't get anything done. Bay Club officials are in- stalling new carpet. drapes, furniture and bed spreads in the rooms, which are used for temporary stays by club mem- bers and guests of members. The Bay Oub's 144 apart- Balboa Bay dub offecws have decided b redecorate tM dub's 1 21 guest rooms and suites, while still punuin1 an expantloft plan that would replace the rooms with a MW hotel. ments, which will remain even if the club is ex- panded, aren't included in the redecorating prOJCCt Meanwhile, Bay O ub officials continue their ef- forts to get city approvtl for an CJq>MSion. 1bey agreed not to sue the city last N~mber, oaly after the City Council aareeci to continue discuss- ing ideas for an expansiot. Mike Stanko. general manager of the Bay Club, said the redecorating"witt be completed by soa1'e- time 1n Jul). He declined to disclose the cost of the project, which will also include upgrading of plumbing and lighting fixtures. If Bav Club officials' expansion plans had been apprO\ed -the City Council last July rejected plans chat called for the existing guest rooms to be razed in favor of a 300-room hotel -the rcdeco- ratmg would not have been needed. The club's owne~ still hope to get an expansion approved, but they now believe approval will take at least long enough to make the redecorating worthwhile. The city bfred the N~rt Beach office of ac- counting firm Kenneth Leventhal & Co. to revft the Bay Club's expansion plans and determine the minimum number of ho el rooms that would be economkaUy feasible at the site. The $9,000 re- port, due to be completed later this month. could open the door for a new "Ound of nesutiations be- tween the City Council ard Bay Oub officials. .. That will probably be some tune to come, and we don't know if it will be approved or if it won't be approved," Stanko said ... We JUSt feel it neces- sary in the meantime to upgrade our rooms by re- decoratmg. ·· Jack Oldham, a pan nea with Kenneth Leventhal & Co.. said his firm wil discuss its preliminary findings v.;th city officia~ on Thursday. He said the firm may not have enough information to make a conclusion becaus: some of the Bay Oub's market data could be outdated. Oldham said that given the time-consuming na- ture of the expansion negotiations, the redeco- rating project is probably ~orthwhile. The redecorating project is being done in stages -wnh ecuons of rooms closed off and re- decorated each week -m order to avoid an inter- ruption m Bay Club services. "If they're nOl spending a lot of money, it makes sense," Oldham sad. "O early, it's JOina to be a year or more before things start happening there." Their present record is 8-1 with a pl3y- ing schedule that is very demnnding. The. junior college circuit is extremely competi- tive. The number of CIF high school boys' volleyball teams has doubled in the last three years while the number of Division I collegiate opportunities has not increased at the same rate. With fewer op- partunities. more good players arc choos· ing the junior college route. OCC has won the State Championship for four or the last five ye3rs including the last three years in a row. Considering the compe- tition, that is quite an accomplishment. In these ch3mpionship years, OCC has been led by outstanding "swing hitters." Brian Lewis (cx-CdM star) was :i two-t ime St3te MVP. Matt Lyles, a leader of two championships, is currently a st3rter 3t Long Beach State. Masui Allen and Lance Lyons were last ycu 's championship swing hitters. Allen is currently starting for the University of Ha- waii. This year's team is equally as talented. The middle blocling is strong with four good players. . Mike Man1hei is a 6-foot-5 middle blocker from Woodbridge High who "bangs" the ball. Jeff Hall is a 6"'6 player from Minnesota who played at Park Col- lege (Missouri) last year and is a legiti- mate Division I candidate. Jim Butchko from Mi ion Viejo is a 6- 3 high flier. Kevin Rc)nol<h, who started for Edison last year, is a solid fundamen- tally SO\lnd player. The setting is also solid v.ith three "players." Matt Wintcrburn, who ca~ pl:iy many positions, brings years of cxpenenC'C wtth his 6-5 body. Ry:m Van Rensselaer from EJ Toro is a \cry cr:Uty seller who rtlO\.es his hitters around well. Ray Brown, a coach of many )Outh teams, provides a ~lid trio of hit- ters that any coach would love to h:i\e. The "swin& hitting" corps includes 6- foot Joe Woo from Laauna Hills who is a very solid b:ill-control player. Nath~n. S~h-er, a 6-3 player Crom Mater Dea, IS ex- tremely versatile and can play opposite or • at the swing. Steve Snyder, who st11rtcd for Edison's 1990 Clf finaJist, has size and b:ill control to pl:iy the net effecthely, as well as p3.SS. Scott SulHvan, a 23->'Car-old Creshm3D from Glendale, Ariz., as a \•eteran o! many USVBA seasons. His maturity and .. sprinp" provide an added dimension to thlS team. Tbe "opposite the setter" position can be filled by Wintcrbum or Skiver, but Devin Frisby, a 24-year-old lefty from Gancsha. is a force. The gen- eral perception or Newport Harbor High's baseball team goes something like this: "Palaferri today, and we'll think about tomorrow, tomorrow." . Since 1970. the number of re-marriages In the U.S . has Increased by 63 percent to the current number of one mlllton . Only four out of every 10 Americans arc married to their ortgtnal spouses. . Try to Imagine living wtth your mom and sister and then h aving her re-marry to a man wt th two children of his own.For many CdM students It's a fact of life . Many common problems associated wtth step-parenting are discipline and acceptance. The greater the role step- parents have In discipline. the greater the chance of divorce a nd behavioral problems In the first two and a half years of ma rriage. Another side to this situation ts when chlldren fully accept their s tep pa rent into their lives. ·1n my case. my step-m other has helped me by being a role model and teachJng me valua ble lessons: said junior Chris Pomeroy. In ma ny situa tions the step par~nt assumes full responsi- bility of the child. glvtng the child love and benefits that wouldn't have been fell since the ortgtnal parent had left. The presence of step-brothers and sisters often com- pUcates re lationships that grow between them.
