By Russ Loar SIJI! Wnter NEWPORT BEACH -Texas Gov. Ann Richards took her two- week "economic development" tour to Newport Tuesday where she met with officials from Loral Aeronutronic Division to pitch the pro-business climate or her home state. But Richards insists her trip is not a Texas raid on California's • hard-pressed aerospace industry. "My purpose in visiting the com- panies that I'm seeing -com- panies that already have a presence in Tex.as -is to thank them for their business and to let them meet me personally," Richards said. Her travels are also intended to sell Texas as a site for the future ex:pansion or companies with divi· sions in her home state, according to Richards. In fact, the company. Health Test Inc, on Tuesday launched an ad,ertising cam- paign to market i1s product, "HI V Hume Check." StC'phen J. Coonan sending ii in for a lab test. Customers who test negative for HIV -the virus that leads to AIDS -wiU be notified by Home Test Inc. within abou1 a week. Customers wbo test inconclusive or posi- tive -meaning there's a chance they have the virus -will be referred to clin- ics that will conduct ct.nftrmatory tests. Health professionals have been critical of HIV Home Check, citing the need for counseling when a person tests positive for the virus. And both federal and state health officials have expressed concern over a product that requires untrained people to obtain their own blood sam- ples. delicately. He said qualified counselors will ref er such customers to a clinic that will conduct a second test, and when, and if, they test positive in the confirma- tory test, they'll receive processional counseling. And for those customers who aren't comfortable with pricking them- selves for the initial blood sample, he said, Health Tes1 Inc. will make house cn.lls to assist them. first in California, and Health Test Inc. has plans to eventually sell its product nationwide. While many clinics offer Cree HIV testing, HIV Home Check offers more privacy in a poten1ially embarrass- ing situation. Pryor said he expects the product to be sold primarily to sexually active men and women between the ages of 18 and 34; especially college students. He added that initially -prior to becoming well eslablishcd and prior to marketing the product nationwide -the company is projecting sales of 300 HJV Home Checks a week, and as many as l\alf of those customers will opt for assistance in collecting their blood samples. Individuals will be able to call a toll- frec number to order the.! pruduct, which will be sold for $24.95. For an extra S2U. customers can get personal a55istance 111 wlkcting a blood sample for the test. But Health Test Inc. officials believe they have those bases covered. Doug Pryor, a spokesman for the com- pany. said customers testing positive or inconclusive for HIV will be dealt with Health Test Inc. was founded e:INier this year by Stephen J. Coonan, an l1r- vine resident who previously was in- volved in the business or drug testing for transportation farms. Coonan bills Health Test Inc. as a company that is devoted to slowing the spread of HIV until a cure for AIDS can be found, but the company also appears to have excellent profit po- tential. That would translate to weekly rev- enues of nearly S 10.500 and annual rev- enues of nearly $550,000. 111 V Home Check involves drawing a ~mall bloou sample in the home and HIV Home Check will be marketed Celebrities to stump for Planet Hollywood location COST A MESA -It's of- ficial. His current occupation is as a television commentator. He is married to Shelley AM Buchanan, they have no children. Buchanan received 40% of the Republican votes in the New Hampshire primary on February 18, 1992. In the past 50 years, no United States President has been re-elected when their challenger received more than 35% of the vote in this primary. This is not good news for President Bush. Buchanan's campaign has been centered on his "send a message" theme. He feels it is lime to send a message to the White House against Bush in these times of economic distresS. Many primary v0<ers supported Buchanan because Bush broke his 1988 campaign promise not to have any new taxes. Sevenly- one percent of those who voted for Buchanan said it was important for their candidate to have specific ideas. He only received 8% of the support of the voters who feel that experience is most import.anL Thal is because he does not have much political experience. Buchanan was Special Assistant to President Nixon from J 9(1} lo 1973. He was Communicatiorrs Director for President Reagan from 1985 to 1987. He was a syndicated columnist from 197 5 to 1985 and Buchanan has been co-host or CNN's political talk show "Crossfire" since 1984. Most candidates for the presidency have much more political experience. Buchanan would be a strong leader for our country. He has shown that he has the support of many Republicans already . by his big upset win in New Hampshtrc. The country is angry with Bush and whai he has done in the past four years. Buchanan may be their next choice. A Threat to Bush By DREW WHITE Patrick J. Buchanan , a right· wing Republican, came very close to overtaking George Bush in the New Hampshire primary. Pat Buchanan is 53 years old and was the television talk-show panelist for Crossfire . When he decided to run for president, John Sununu took over his pos1uon on the _show. Buc hanan ~ Lhc service of some vague new world order," he said. The only problem with Buchanan's campaign is that he is only a protest candidate. (I~ ,~ 11~/ t I j ( ... ' • Best Choice For Democrates By IAN STRATFORD Throughout the last few months Governor Bill Clinton has gone from a liule known presidential candidate (5% in the polls) to a Democratic front runner (37% in the polls). From a distance he seems like a bold planner with innovative ideas and plans. But under a more suingcnt microscope he is seen as a poor manager with drifting views. For instance, Clinton came out and publicly advertised that he was one of the few DcmocralS who backed Bush early and unreservedly on the Gulf War. But on January 15, 1991, lhc war deadline, the· Arkansas G~~· qoo.cd him as saying heagrp with the ma)Onty of Democrats who voced against the use off orce and sanctions should be giving more time. This i.s summed up by his opponent in the Arkansas Governor's race, Sheffield Nelson when he said. ·He11 be what the people want him to be. He11 do or say what it will lake to get elected.· As a governor, Clinton has shown a very rare talent for sniffing out issues and solving them on a swe level before they become nationally known. Early during his reign experts ranked Arkansas schools WI in the nation. After thi s siory was televised on national news programs Clinton decided that it was time' to do something. His efforts which included very easy teacher proficiency lCSts which 93% of the teachers passed on their first aucmpL This was too liulc too late. · The way Clinton makes up for his lack of managerial skill is hi middle of the rood, middle<lass views. On taxes, Clinton' program revolves around a ...._ ____ r============L____ m1ddlc<lass tax cut and a tax raise in the high incomc(S200,<XX>+) bracket. Clinton's program is critiqued in that it would help in the loog nm, but it is not enough 10 jolt the sliding economy. On defense. ClinlOrl lakes thc usual Democratic view. Herc he wouldcut an add i tionaJ S I 00 billion. On trade, Clinton plans a fTCC> trade pact with Mexico. but he has said the U. S. should tell the Japanese that "if they don't play by our rules. we'll pl3y by their rule ." Governor Clinton has had wavering bcliers and shown insumcicnt managerial skills which are vital in the White House. Personally. Ah.hough Bush def cat.cd Buchanan by 16% in the primary. Buchanan ~d. ~we have ~ chance to make history." He's not really sure what he would do if he was actually elected. He has no imagan:nive solution for all the lost jobs to foreign compeutors and he has no health care plan. He might lose a liule support if voters begin 10 demand specifics. I thmk Buchanan can make a good run in this campaign 1f he could learn to calm down hi.s ideas and be more specific about the issues. He could ea.;ily become an alt.crruitivc choice for Republican voters. Buchanan will also gel the v0<es from the people trying to send a message to Bush that be must l.akt-cbarg.e._ If Buchanan can offer people specifics on his issues I think Bush will finally have a real election on his hands.
