Robert Hardy said he is investigating employee complaints that retirement and medical in· surance funds were used to oper· ate the Mercedes-Benz dealer· ship as it was struggling to survive last summer. "I began reading her diaries. She ha~ more than 60 years worth of hand wntten dianes," Lewis said. "I JUSl fell in love with what I was reading. She did the opposite of what was 'S'upposed to be a woman's role at the time." Although Lewii. was not able to speak directly to Murbarger be- fore she died, she was reportedly excited about being the subject of h1i. thesis, the first to depict her life story. "She was an inde· pendent personality and put her heart and soul into whatever she was doing," he said. Lewis, 29. has donated a copy of his thesis to the Costa Mesa Historical Society for anyone who is interested in learning more about Murbarger. Although this was the first year in recent t~mcs that the school had entered the county's premier academic competition, the nine-member Mariners School team won first place for overall performance and third place in the highly competitive Super Quiz which focused on ancient Egypt. The team -which also includes £tudents Lauren Keller, Chrissy Henderson, Ryan Collins, Monica Bridle, Bryan Downey, Ryan Silver and Paul Peters -won a total 37 awards. Thirty-five teams competed in th e second Orange County Sixth Grade Academic Pentathlon. Also contributing to the school's success were the teachers who served as Academic Pentat hlon coaches: Pcnnc Ferrell, Mary Roberts, Val Baugh, Diane Bcock and Lynda......... · "We've tried to capitalize on recognizing outstanding academic contributions by aJI students,'' said Manners Principal Bonnie Swann. "We try to incorporate their victory in building spirit for the entire school." Perhaps school officials should not be too surprised by their students'. outstanding perf ormancc.
