NEWPORT BEACH - A robber posing
as a customer got away with a brand-new
$90,000 Mercedes 400 SE belonging to
Fletcher Jones Motor Cars Monday
afternoon, police said.
The robber, who went b:• the name of
"David," was test-driving tne car at about
5:45 p.m. on Spruce Avenue near Bristol
Street when he pulled a revolver on a
salesman and told him to "get out," Newport
Beach Lt. Tim Newman said.
After a brief $truggle ov~r the gun, the
salesman got out of the car and called police
at the ne arby Fletcher Jones Motor Cars
re-sale lot at 1301 Quail St.
Despite a countywide alert, the robber
drove away undetected in the black
Mercedes, Newman said. The 33-year-old
salesman was not injured in the robbery.
The robber, who initially wanted to test
drive a more expensive 500 SEL, is described
as Asian, in his 20s or 30s, about 5 feet 5
inches tall, with black hai r and brown-rim·
med glasses. He was described as having a
pock-marked or scarred face and was
wearing a brown dress shirt, blue trousers
and black shoes at the time of the robbery.

scheduled despite fair
COSTA MESA -The Pacific
Amphitheatre has booked a third concert
that will clash with the Orange County fair
this summer, opening 1he potential for a
massive traffic crunch.
Soul singer Michael Bolton is scheduled to
perform at the amphitheater July 18, the
second Saturday of the fair, officials
announced today.
On Friday, July 17, the Allman Brothers
Band will perform, and Chica~o has a date
of Saturday, July 25. Negotiations arc ongo·
ing and "other big shows" could be added
later, according to amphitheater officials.
The more concerts, the more work for fair
officials -and the more money.
Last year Pacific Amphitheatre officials
booked three concerts during the fair,
including a sold-out visit by rowdy rockers
Guns N' Roses which lured a capacity of
18,788 people into the amphitheater the
same evening 51,379 people attended "Senior
Citizens' Day" at 1he fairgrounds.
It took up to 25 extra traffic officcB -
some worki ng 20..hour shifts -and months
of planning by city, fair and amphitheater

SANT A ANA -A Costa Meu woman
pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the brutal
murder and dismemberment of her newlywed
husband last Thanksgiving holiday.
Omaima Stainbrook Nelson, 27, was
arrested for fatally stabbing her 56-year-old
husband, William Nelson, after she allegedly
took plastic bags full of his dismembered limbs
to the homes of two acquaintances in hopes
that they would help dlsposc of the body parts.
Al a preliminary hearing last month. both
acquaintances testified th3t she told them she
killed her husband in self defense after he tied
her up and raped her.
A trial date will be set Friday in Superior
Court.
Public Defender Tom Mooney said it will
probably begin in September or October.

they're not surprised. Nearly every yeM, they
try to prevent overlapping concert dates. And
nearly e'cry year they fail.

Low Flow" w;iter conservation kits, including
new shower heads, leak detection d)•e tablets
and toilet displacement bags. ,
The Board of Directors of the Me sa
Consolidated Water District recently op·
proved the showcrhead retrofit program for a
representatl\ e sample of the district's resi·
dential customers. The program is a cooper·
ative dfort between the district, various
county sanitation districb and the Mctropol·
itan .... Water District of Southern California.
The Roberts Company, which has
undertaken similar projects in other cities,
has been hired to distribute the water
conservation kits staning May 29. The kits
arc fr¢c and the materials arc easily
in.stalled.

Pilot's monthly survey of
residential real estate
brokerages in April posted a 12
percent sales increase, on
average, over their April 1991
sales pace. The gain reflected a
modest increase over last year,
when sales activity was
especially weak. Nevertheless,
the improvement marked the
seventh straight month in which
members of the survey group
outpaced their year-ago
revenues.

"no earlier than 30 days prior to the election."
The company also said a S 150 cash bond in
order to post signs in th e city was "an undue bur-
den on Free Speech."
After reviewing the ordin ance, City Attorn ey
Thomas Kath e said certain provision were ·•unen-
forceable."
The council asked city officials to draw up a
new proposal in time fo r the November election.
The rejected changes would not have affected the
signs already posted around town for the June pri-
mary.

has not had enough time to plan for
what promises to be an expensive
college career. "Most parents have 18
or 19 years to plan for university
expenses." Kartcehnbadi said. "I got
caughl without much notice."
Masoud -the son of Mike and
Alejandra Karkehabadi -has only
one year of pre-med sludies left
before he'll be ready for medical
school. But he has yet to receive a
scholarship.
After years of private tutoring,
Masoud entered school at age 9,
completing 42 units in two semesters
at Mt. San Antonio College in
Walnut. After his family moved to
Laguna Hills, Masoud transferred to
Orange Coast College in January,
taking six classes for a total 23 units.
Most full-time students average
between 12 and 16 units a semester.
With permission from college
President Dave Grant, Masoud took
the largest academic load ever
attempted by an Orange Coast
College srudenr, studying subjects
ranging from chemistry and
trigonometry to anthropology and
political science.
"So far, l'm getting A's in most of
my classes," Masoud said. "I don't
have to study too much. I have total
reC'lll. l remember all the lectures."
His parents first noticed Masoud's

month-old hu~ky puppy his
children had bought for him.
Four days la1er, the puppy
was found po1M>ned by a
piece of meat that had been
stuck into the garage.
The puppy suffered aei-
z u res for about three
months before dying, Casey
said.

18 months, he memorized the lyrics
of songs he'd heard on MTV. At age
2 Masoud was using a computer, and
by age 4 he wns rending the
newspaper every day. When Masoud
was 7, he pused the high school
equivalency exam with a perfect
score.
Masoud wants to become a brain
surgeon. a fining occupation perhaps
for someone with an JQ topping 200.
An IQ of 140 and above is considered
to be at the genius level. Despite
Masoud's genius, his father said
society is largely ill-equipped to
accommodate child prodigies.
"He works hard, he really works
hard," his father said. "He has such a
giving heart. h's sad that kids like
him are not really supported the way
they should be supported."
After Masoud's parents agreed to
let Orange Coast College publicize
the story of their son in January, he
has appeared in publications and on
television programs around the world.
He'll be featured in an upcoming "48
Hours" television documentary
focusing on the brain, hosted by CBS
anchorman Dan Rather.
Fluent in English and Spanish,
Masoud loves 10 read his beloved
Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedias -

manager of the city-owned

volleyball brackets came
out, there were many
local coaches upset.
For the last 15 years, there has
been an Orange County team in
the CIF Finals every year which
shows the strength of boys'
volleyball in
the county.
Volleyball

which is a
very
subjective
procedure
anyway.
Then, the
remaining
teams are
placed to
accommodate
travel and to
assure that
second-and
third-place
teams will not meet first-place
teams from the snme leagues.

The outcome of game two seemed to have
a denating effect on both the El Toro play-
ers and the Chargers' backers.
"We turned it up when we had to," said
Glenn. "We were able to get the adrenaline
going at the right times."
Behind the thunderous kills of Frank
Griffo (who finished with a team-high 14)
and Mcintee (11), along with the setting of 1
Russell Gan, the Sailors began hitting on all
cylinders in the third game.
Mcintee, off a feed from Gan, delivered
to make it 8-1. Later, Mark McAnlis sent
one just inside the sideline and it was 13-3.
Out came Griffo and Mclnlee lo an ova-
lion from the Newport gathering. Seconds
lalcr, an ace from backup Morgan Pattison
and the Sailors were at match point, 14-3.
But it wa sn't to be quite that easy.
El Toro took over the serve after a Gled-
hill kill, scoring four straight points. Two
aces sandwiched around an exchange of

the Newport side and it was 14-7.

"We wanted to give some of the seniors a
chance," Glenn explained. "I sensed a mo-

Newport Harbor High School
offers students many great cl~cs to
choose from , but one of the best has to
be the class of Peer Counseling. Peer
Counseling is taught by H. Naas1..
Both the teacher and the students
involved th ink the class 1s a toul
success.
Alt.hough the class only meets
one day a week, it is still enough time
to make the class work. The one day
a week that the class docs meet is
Wednesday. It t.alces place from 3 PM
to 6 PM.
Peer Counsclmg is basically
set up to help high school students
with problems inside of school or
outside of school. However, lh is is
done in a very unique way. This is
done by Jelling students discuss their
problems with other students. This
makes it easier for students to express
their inner-feelings. The.ref ore students
can relate to each other and dcaJ with
their problems a lot beucr.
A studeni involved an th e
program is only expected to do one
thing. This is to share eitpcriences and
to listen to fellow students. By doing
this, students can help themselves and
fellow students. If a st:.&dent docs this.
the class can be a great success. .
Although Peer Counseling 1s
a wonderful class, there is not a large
group of students involved. Although
the amount of students is sufficient, a
larger group could help the class be a
little better. Increasing the number of
students is the only improvement that
could be made. All of the other parts
of the class arc outstanding.

and ask for Dons. What! You don't
know who Dons is? For all of you
wondering, Doris is our on-campus
nurse that is always wailing to help.
If you are planning to get hurt
at school Tuesday and Friday are the
best days lo do so because lhosc arc the
only two days that Doris comes to our
school. Otherwise you'll have to be
treated by an amateur. On Monday.
Wednesday and Thursday Doris trove 1,
to schools all over \he district to share
her help with everybody.
If you think that the JOb of
nurse is a very easy job, you're wrong.
Everyday at our school Doris lt~ts
two to two dozen kids wilh injuries
ranging from a cul finger to a sci1urc.
Doris said that her most vnlu:.iblc
commodity is ice. She can make ice 10
magic for 1 cut or a bruise.
Most of Doris' work comes

Gail Hunt and the RSP Program

At Ncwpon Harbor High School, Gail Hunt Leaches a special class for students with learning
disabilities.
Gail Hunt teaches RSP. RSP is a class for students with a learning disability.
In Mrs. Hunt's class"thcre arc over 30 students. All together in every RSP class there are over
80 students being helped by two and a half teachers. One teacher only works half day at Newport and the
other half at anolhcr school in lhe di lricl
The way Mrs. Hunt's class works is she helps the swdcnts with their homework and sees lh.al the
students keep up in class. For the program Lo work it t.akes cooperation between the students, the teachers,
and the RSP teachers.
The class is successful most of the time, although ii sometimes can not help those studenlS, who
__ do not help themselves.

the Special Day Class

As a student, you can travel through your four )'C3f\ nt Newport" uhout rcnlizing all the programs
we have at our school for students with learning disab1li11e . This last week I had the opportunity to talk
toCaroleMooy,an intcrmcdi:ue Instruction Aide in a SOC or Spcclal DayCl:ll s. She works with students
who ha~e learning diS3bilities; which mcnns that although most of them arc above avcrnge in intelligence,
they just have perception and/or processi ng difficuhics. -
Mrs. Mooy majored in special education at W e tern Michigan Uni versity. After college, Mrs.
Mooy worked with lcaming-handi~ppcd students in California and at a state ho p1&al in ,catamazoo.
Michigan. She has also been a regular classroom tc:lcher m both suucs.
Throughout the day Mr. Greenwell :ind herself ha,·e 4 t studcms who they help with their outside
cbsses if they ncc.d it and teach and t~t on lhe core curri culum. Bus1cally, they cover t.hc same subject
matter as the rest of the school.
Their gool is to prepare lhcm for the proficiency te t . mamstrcnm them , and see Lhnt they receive
vocational training to prepare them for the future . In lhe SOC they u'iC a mulll-scnsory appr03Ch to
learning. The students are able to ad,•ancc above and out of the SOC or to grade level and continue in the
SOC program.
When asked about the studcnlS achievement abov~ high school he re ponded, "We h3ve former
students who make more money than we do. We hnvc stud~nts m college. students w1lh jobs, and students
with prof cssions.
When asked if she felt the progrJm is a su ccss \he replied, "Ye . we have more successes lhnn

Second Language) Program
