Council advised to widen bike path on Seashore .Drive WEST NEWPORT -The bicycle path on Seashore Drive should be widened to case overcrowding on the popular street, a city committee ha recommended. City Councilwoman Ruthelyn Plummer had proposed banning parking on the south side of Seashore as a way to improve visibility and relieve traffic congestion on the heavily traveled coastal st reet. Out the off-street parll.ing committee is recommending the council vote tonight instead to simply widen the painted pathway from 34th to 56th Street to better accommodate the many cyclists, s~atcrs and pC'destrians who u::.e the pathway on the ocean side of Seashore. Widening the \\1ro-way pathway by four feet will narrowJhe car lane, but there will still be enough space for one-way car traffic, ci ty Traffic Engineer Rich Edmonston said. The congestion on popular Seashore Drive, which stretches from 32nd street to the Santa Ana River, h. a traditional problem in the :irca. Bicyclists, joggers. skaters and surfers carting surfboards share the crowded street with motorists. and residents contend many accidents have occurred because of the conge::.t1on and limited sight distance. Beaehfront residents b;icking their cars out of the garages can't see oncoming cyclists and skaters and visibility at intersections is also blocked by parked car::.. locals say. For years, Plummer has advocated eliminating parking on the ocean side to clear up visibilit). ln Janual'). she again called for the parking ban ;ind asked the off-street parking comm111cc to review the idea. She noted th:it parking has alrcndy been eliminated on the south side of Seashore from Orange Street to the rher. She ~1lso proposed parll.ing meters or pay boxes be installed on the north llidc of the street. Out city ::.taff noted that a parking ban would drastically decrease spaces in an area that is already parking-deficient. The committee recommendation doesn't solve the problem or cars backing out or beaehfron\ garages, but "we don't feel we have any real way to answer that," ·Edmonston said. Jf the council approve the widening, city staff wifl try to get the path restripcd before summer begin,, said Edmonston. Hiring M>mcone 10 an db last the asphalt v. ill cost the city about $3,000 to S4,000, while city crews can repaint the stripe them elves. City officials even tried getting Caltrans to sell the land to the city, but gave up when the state ref used to drop its price. Wynn said a city-funded ap· praisal set the property value at $2 million if developed, because of the access problems, and only SS0,000 if left as open space. But Caltrans' appraisal valued the property at $8 million, based on the assumption that eventually, the site will be accessed by Bluff Road, a street planned on · the West Newport Oil Company prop· crty to the west. City officials disagree with Cal- trans' assessment, since Bluff Road construction is years away. Gary Naccarato, manager of Cahrans' excess land department, said the state may hold another auction around October and may drop the minimum bid price. But in the meantime,· traffic officials will review whether there's any way to provide safe access to the site from Coast Highway, Nac- carato said. With access, the land is a valu· able piece of development prop- erty, he said. And the state des- perately needs to sell the land. "The state is in dire straits for money," he said. Like scvc~l other hoteliers and operators of visitor-related busi- nesses, Gurtner said he's con· ccmcd about the potential impact of the riots. Dent, a former Australian Open doubles champion and Wimbledon doubles runner·up, was gone for 13 years, to be exact, spanning three decades on the ATP Tour. A Newport Beach resident, Dent, 42, isn't quite as nimble as he once was on the court~. but his local following seems to grow each year. He only plays competitively twice a. year -at che Wimbledon Seniors Tournament and at che Adoption Guild Tournament in Newport Beach -but he's clearly the fans' favorite each time he takes the court locally. It might also have something to do with his popularity and reputa· tion at the John Wayne Tennis Club, where Dent has been chc teaching pro since 1988. "He's the best pro around," said Laguna Beach's Bob Miller, whose son currently tak~ lessons with • Dent. "Phil Dent is a perfection· isl. He doesn't. just stand there during his lessons and say, 'That a boy.' If there's a problem, no mat· ter how small, he finds a way to communicate that to his players. He won't let chem go until they understand." The estimated 500 fans watching the men's open quarterfinals of the Adoption Guild Tournament at the Newport Dcach Tennis Club on Monday were certainly cheer· ing for Dent and his Newport Beach partner Ross Case, a former Wimbledon doubles cham- pion, buc they were hushed fol- lowing a 6-7, 6·1, 6-3 defeat to sccond·seeded Ian Aler and Keith Evans. "Yeah, we're probably smarter, buc (Aler and Evans) have the fit· ness and quickness to get the job done," s:iid Dent, in need of an ice pack on his left ankle. ''They're younger. We don't serve as big as ,.,,e used to. You give something away when you don't ~ervc very often. "We don't play enough and we don't sec that kind of serving. A win for us \\OUld be nice. but v.c're not stupid." Entertaining the crowd with his court mannerisms, Dent still has the locals on his ~ide, whether he's up 40-lo"e or down love·40. "I think it's because "e pla) a game they can relate to," Dent said. "We probably have more fun than most of the guys out there pl:iying. (The fans) can probably associ3te more "ith us r:uher than the younger guys because they re· member us playing (on the tour)."
