There we were at the plcnd1d Monarch Bay palazzo of Judie nd Cnrmclo Mnnto, ju)t a beach away from The Ritz-Carlton, savoring the good life. I was standing with the host, quaffing a cup of holiday cheer. Clark wall ~praY. led on the noor, totally ignoring us. He was busily playing with his new •toys. Keeping an auentive watch on the 4-year-old boy wit h the famous name was his father, John Clurk Goble, sole cion of the longtime King of Hollywood. Between talres, Prince John was admiring a sheepskin-lined coat presented by his fiancee, the Mantos' lovely 22-ycar-old daughter, Danielle. At 'their home, a ranch in Mafibu, they're now making we~ding plans. The resemblance is slriking :.. identical profile, complete wi1h dimple. flashing smile beneath dnrk mustache. Tall, muscular, displaying a dash mindful of the dad he never saw except on films. At 31, John is only mildly interested in a movie career. He's gaining fame in another field: off-road tluto racing. His glamorous photo adorns a recent i sue of AutoWeek, leaning on a Ford Ranger true~ he piloted in the Baja 1000 • considered the sport's mo)t grueling desert race. Even without a caption, )ou'd recognize 1he heri1age -1he almost·tmpudent pose, the winning grin, 1he obvious love of racing c:irs. And what kind of \oy was absorbing young Clark's dedicated interest on the Manto racew;iy? Hot Wheels, naturally. A few gift-wrappings away, the tyke's older sister, Kayley, was trying to maintain her balance aboard anolhcr wheeled contraption. They're the ompring of John's first marriage, which dissolved in divorce. · Even without the Gable aura, a fanuly gathering at Villa Manto is !>(>methani; special -an extension of the cuisirtc and warm ho5pitality of Carmelo's Ristorante in Corona del Mar. He was especially fond of the games in which the Pac-10 representatives beat the Ohio State teams coached by the volatile Woody Hayes. "Any time we beat Woody Hayes, I was happy," Matthews recalled. Matthews, who hJls a collection of programs and ticket stubs from all 49 Rose Bowl games he has attended, said he doesn't have a favorite team from the series. He' said that as a California native, he generally roots for the Pac-JO represe ntative. That's one reason he's predicting that Washington will prevail in the 1993 Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl usually sells out, and in many years Mauhews has been unable to buy a tid.et in advance. However,-he said he ha·sn't had any problems buying ticl..ets from scalpers, and he's never had to pay more than SIO above face price. His ticket for the 1944 'tame cost $4.58, while tickets for the 1993 Rose Bowl have a face price of $46. The timing of Wayne Matthews' birth almost forced his father to miss the 1956 Rose Bowl, but bccau e Jan. I fell on a Sunday that year, and bowl games were not played on Sundays in those days, Robert Matthews was able to go to the game on Jan. 2 and keep his streak alive.
