Before incorporation in 1953, city was called Harper. • By Joel Beers Stall Wriler The history of Costa Mesa began ·lo'!g before settlers started cd'ming to a small town called Harper in the early 20rh Century. The area was first sectled centuries ago by Indians of ·the Shoshone linguistic group. Remnants of that civilization still exist on the bluff area of Fairview Park, which is the largest Native American archeological site south of • . Ventura on the C~lifornia coast. _ A Spanish expedition led by Don Gaspar de Portofo came next, in 1769. Jose Antonio Yorba, a membeLof that group; was granted 62,500 acres extending from the Santa Ana Canyon to Newport Beach. Yorba named the land Rancho .Santiago de Santa Ana. Costa Mesa's most important landmark of that area is the Estancia aqobe in Mesa Verde, which 'was built in the early 19th Century lo shelter -ranch wor"1cers. Swiss national who established an olive grove on the mesa above Newport Beach in 1891. Harper took its name from two brothers who owned land west of Harbor Boulevard and south of 19th Street. A railrnod stop on the Harpcr•s land was the hub of the community. which was also helped by the discovery of oil and local land developers. ~ In 1920, the name of the community was changed to Costa Mesa, a name submitted by Alice Plumer during a cdntest. Costa Mesa mea·ns coastal tablclnnd in Spanish. t In 1925, the town ~ad 2,500 f>eople. a 200-book 1ibrary and a volunteer fire department . World ~ar II impacted Costa Mesa greatly. The · Santa Ana Army Air Base was constructed on land currently occupied by the Orange COU!_lty Fairgrounds. The base was a·~re-flight 1 training base for navigators, bombardiers and pilots. The base gave the farming settlement another identity. Additionally, many of the 200,000 servicemen who rserved on the base later returned to C ta Mesa and surrounding areas after the war. . .
