Now that he's surrendering his Local Scene post as executive director of the Orange County Philharmonic. Society, the 49-year-old impresario is nearly white-haired. What contributed to the graying of Voll mer? Well , for openers, there was the nail-biting experience with New Zealand soprano IGrl te Kanawa. The limousine chauffeur's mission was simple: He was to drive the celebrated diva from the Four Seasons hotel to her appearance at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, a few short miles from Fashion Island. · Instead, inexplicably, he drove her to the Philharmonic's offices on 17th Street in Costa Mc a. When the mi.stake wac; realized, he said, "No problem." Then he retraced his route to Ne'' port Beach and headed down the coast. From the back scat. the pas cnger trilled: "I see the ocean. Arc we supposed to be seeing the ocean?" Tlme was running short when they pulled into a gas station in Laguna Beach to ask.directions. From a phone booth, she called the hotel and pleaded fortissimo: "Please, please, come and get me." When she finally got to the · hall, the concert crowd was restless, but she offered a gracious explanation -and was given the first of mapy ovations. Then there was ltzhak Perlman, scheduled for his first Philharmonic booking at Santa Ana High School, forerunner of the fancy music hall in Costa Mesa. Scheduling was tight, and - &ecausc of weather or whatever -the fiddler couldn't get a flight out of Arizon'a. So Vollmer . hastily enlisted the aid of weal thy music lovers and latched onto a corporate airplane. There was only one problem. The jet didn't have a john. When it finally touched down here, an aide marveled: "That's the fastest I've ever seen ltzhak move." Another Pedman - remembrance: HiScontract called for two cones of ice cream (vanilla) before a performance.
