His penchant for cross-dressing is an integral part of his character, yet.it materi31izes only occasionally in presentational ·scenes and is not addressed between these sequences. His abundancc~of energy carries the role a long way, but the n~dcd "moment of fruth" is missing. A more satisfying relationship is that of Bieglcr's character Jo-the avuncular figure of Ulysses S. Grant, the old war horse shuflling off the stage of history. 'Douglas Rowe enacts the fabled general/ pres,ident with geriatric gusto, easily becoming the. play's most memorable character in the process. .
