prize pieces of land near
Upper Newport Bay.

has chosen Paul.Freeman,
an independent consultant

The two pieces of land -
one on the east side of the
bay and the other on the
opposite side near Coast
Highway -arc considered

significance.
Negotiation arc under
way between the Trust for
Public Land, representing
the conservancy, and The
Irvine Co. to establi h a •
purchase price and option
agreement for the two
properties.
The Irvine Co. h:id
reached an accord with the
city in August to develop
258 acres of its remaining
undeveloped land in Upper
Newport Bay. The Irvine
Co. is willing to sell the
properties for open space
preservation at their fair
market vaJue, but company
officials have said that a
land purchase sale must be
complete by the end of the
year, or the properties will
be developed.
The land, originally
appra,iscd at $80 million,
was recently appraised at
$69 million, though the
purchase price has not
been established.
Funds will be raised
throuJh donations and
public and private corporate
grants. A park bond or even

Cook was enjoying a lavish lifestyle with the
millions he allegedly swindled from more
than two dozen victims -some of whom
were high school pals -police say the local
businessman withheld thousands of dollars
in child support payments from a previous
Cook apparently was about to be arrested
by Riverstde County police for allegedly
cheating his children out of $35,000 in sup-
port payments before Newport Beach detec-
tives and the California Department of Real
Estate caught up with his alleged invest-
ment scam.
The 48-year-old man was arrested Thurs-
day at his American Federal Mortgage
Corp. on MacArthur Bouleva~d. lt was the
Cook was arrested several years ago after
allegedly conn_ing some old high school pals
to invest in a banking scam, but he escaped
jail time after agreeing to pay restitution.
This time, police said, Cook lured inves-
tors by advertising in local newspapers and
allegedly hustl ing old and new acquaintan,-
ccs -including his own attorney.
"He's the ultimate con ma n," said New-
port Beach Police Sgt. Al Fischer.
In addition to boxes of allegedly fraudu-
lent loans, police found in the trunk of
Cook's rent-a-car a driver's license bearing
his picture and the name of his deceased fa-
ther. Fisher said· it appears Cook was also
trying to doctor the dead man's birth certifi-
cate to obtain a phony passport. ·

for playing a large role in shaping Newport
Beach during a period of heavy development.

library's role as "the people's university,"
that he invesced S.50 million of his own
dollars to build them in some 1,400
communities around the tum of the
century. .
Next month, the Newport Beach Public
Library will join with libraries across the
nation in celebrating the contributions of
America's libraries during National Library
Weck (April 18-25). First observed in 1958,
shortly after research first showed
Americans were spending less money on
books and more time in (rant of radios and
tele.vision sets, the week's goal this year is
to focus attention on the life-changing role
of libraries.
H as the library had an impact on your
life? Perhaps you've found a job, done
research for a degree, embarked on a new
career, started a new business, or learned
enough about a medical diagnosis that you
could talk intelligently with your doctor.
Library visits may have inspired you or
your children to become readers rather
than couch potatoes.
If you are homebound, visually impaired
or struggling with literacy, free library
services may have brought the light of the
written word into your life. The library may
even be your source for entertainment
rangil}g from best-sellers, magazines, videos
and compact discs you can enjoy •1 home
to free programs that enrich the lighter side
of your life and lead you to new hobbies
and interests.

Library Week, the Newport Beach Public
Library invites you to tell us how, in 100
words or less, the library has changed your
lifc~ . .Entries will be iudged by a panel of
judges made up of a school board member,
a library trustee and a Friend of the
Library officer. The best will be selected
for publication in the Daily Pilot during
National Library Week.

Nelson Stanley Robinson, a Newport
Beach resident of more than 40 yea rs
and a noted environmentalist, died
March 11 at the age of 86.
Dorn in New York, Mr. Robinson
came to California at age 10 and lacer
became a real estate and yacht broker in

monthly for The Daily Pilot

year-ago sales levels. Members of
the survey group in February
posted a 7 percent gain, on
average, over their February 1992
sales levels, an uptick that followed
a 7 percent year-to-year gain in

Nicholas Curci, born March 10 to
their children, Kit and John Curci
of Costa Mesa. Betsy has been a
singer with the Chorale for 20
years and serves as an officer on
the board as \\Cll. The Moultons
were al~ proud to discuss the
succe s of the Chorale. "This past
Christmas, we released a national
CD. It was extremely
well-received," commented Jerry.
His exuberance was shared by
the ball co-chairs Ann Benjamin
and Sheryl Gerrie, whose hard
work enabled the Chorale to rai se
$35,000 at the affair. Today, the
energetic pair are back at work
running their boutique, "Just For
Fun," on Balboa Island.

financial success of the event is
due to the efforts of Harbor
Island' Mary Lyons. She chaired
the auction and also serves as VP
of Education for the Pacific
Chorale.
"We now have a national name
... we're not just a regional group
any lonaer," said Mary, adding,
"My husband Phil doesn't sing,
but he feels like he's married to
the Chorale!"

evening were the appointed king
and queen of the Chorale Mardi

COSTA MESA -A local man has been
arraigned on four countl of mail fraud in
connection with an aUepd worken'
compeosation scam.
The indictment against Glenn Russell Miller
of Costa Mesa represents the first federal
prosecution of an employer for alleged workers'
compensation fraud.
Federal prosecuton alleae that in 1987 and
1988. Miller fraudulently obtained workers'
compensation insurance policies from the State
Compensation Insurance Fund for his two
temporary employment aaencies -Sunbelt
Services in Los Angeles and Safe~ay Staffing
Service in Bell Gardens.
Miller allegedly submitted false information
and documentation to obtain wod,ers'
compensation coverage. He is accused of
misrepresenting the number of workers
employed, grossly underreporting his annual
payroll and falsifying the type of work
performed.
Furthermore, Miller allegedly filed several
applications for insurance that contained false
information on the ownership and operations of
his businesses. Prosecutors allege that he used
flcttllcms na1S1cs on the applications and issued
fo rged certificates of insurance to companies that
utilized his temporary agencies.
MiU~r:. whose trial is set for May S in U.S.
District Court in Los Angeles, faces five years in
prison and a $250,000 fjnc on each of the four
counts.

Bunnell is a member of the Assistance League
of Newport-Mesa, and ha$ been a longtime
volunteer for the Newport-Mesa Unified School
District. ·
In addjtion, she has been a supporter or the
Newport Beach Friends of the Ubrary, the
Orange Count)' Medical Auxiliary, the SS2 Cub
of Hoag Hospltal and St. Andrew's Presbyterian
Church.
"Cynnic richly deserves this distinction,"
Ferguson said. "She has made many outstanding
contributions as a wife, mother and community
volunteer and has been a source of inspiration to
others for many a year."
Bunnell was also an honorary delegate to the .
1992 Republican National Conventjon, u weU as
volunteer coordinator for state Sen. Marian
Bergeson's 1990 campaign for lieutenant
governor.
From 1986 through 1990, she served as
president of the Newport Harbor Republican
Women, and has served as precinct chairwoman
for Gov. Pete Wilson's campaigns for governor

Victim Sharon Nichols told Fis-
cher that sbe was cajoled into in-
. vesting $100,000 after meeting
Cook's. wife at a tennis club seven
years ago.

into believing he really was a
wealthy, legitimate investor by
wining and dining the Newport

to Nichols, Cook -who bragged
about owning a rare Jaguar -
even flew her to various resort
spots on a charter jct that he
maintained was his own private
plane.

cheui, whose squad won the opening game, 1S-l2,
then lost three in a row to the visiting Warriors,
lS-13, 15-3, 15-ll, in a Sea View League opener.
Woodbridge ( 1-4 overall), which had 21 ~tuff
blocks behind three 6-foot-3 players, turned the
corner last weekend in the Orange County Cham·
p1onships. fi ni hing fifth in the Division I bracket
after beating Huntington Beach, Marina and Ir·
\·-inc before losing to the second-seeded Oilers in
the playoffs.
"We've just lately turned it around," Warriors
Coach Rich Polk said.
CdM (1-3) is still waiting.
"This was very typical of an enrly-scason match
with all the streaks," Fuschetti said. "Whoeve r
keeps the momentum and keeps the streaks going
wall win. Woodbridge played hard and just tuck
with it, but I'm very optimistic with this team be·
cause of the athletes we have. I can cc nothing
but good things happening, It'll be just like last
year when it came down to the second season.''

one match -and Thompson has only been at one
practice -I can sec loads of improvement."
In the second game, Woodbridge took leads of
5·0 and 8-1 before CdM came b:ick to take a 10·9
<.dge. The Warriors, howev.er, cored the next
three points, then CdM took the lead again, 13-12,
before Woodbridge pulled it out behind 6-3 out-
side hitter Kevin Reid. Reid's kill gave the War-
riors a sideoul, then a wide CdM spike attempt
tied the game al 13. Reid recorded back-to-back
block for the final two points.
Hoppe had six or his kills in the first game.
After It was tied eight times, Andy Peykoff put
CdM ahead 13-12 with an unreturnablc serve.
Pcykofrs ace gave the Sea Kings a 14-12 lead,
then following a Woodbridge sideout, Hoppe
ended matters with back-to-back kills.
Following 11 straight sideouts in the third game,
Woodbridge took leads of 4-1 and 7-2, before fi-
