Both immediately took medical retirement. The sudden tum seemed to take the community by surprise. The Daily Pilot has been flooded v.:ith calls nnd leucrs and messages to the Readers' Hotline since the :tnnounccment. been deprived of all the (acts in a case that h3S rocked the police depanment and challenged the sen ibilitics or any entire city. Morality is missing from Newport's decision The Campbell· Villa sexual hara ment case is yet another example of a morality demon tratcd by elected and hired officials in Newport Beach. When popular officials arc ncglieent. they are toraivcn as in the S1ephcn Wainer embezzlement case. In the sexual h~ent case, it oppe.,s city officials are protectina locaJ tu.payers from the expense of due process wbiJe dcnyin& 1hcm the satisfaction or due process. Efforts to settle with the policewomen h3vc foiled up to now. IC firing Campbell and Villa was upheld by the civil service he aring procc • the ability or the city to settle ~•th the women v.-ould be weakened, costina us money.
