On the eve of the 21st Century we Nancy Mcintyre 59 and Holding feel we deserve fairer compensation for our labors than an occasional grunt of approval -which can't be deposited in the bank. Keeping house deserves an executive salary with stock options and bonuses. If nothing more, homemakers would like the dignity of their work recognized -as much as if they were operating a traffic control center or performing brain surgery. "I don't think I could have stayed this active as a senior had it not been for a change in society. It's allowed many of us to stay young and stay involved.'' GIL FERGUSON at right At last. Congress is looking into the Unremunerated Work Act -a fancy name for slave labor. It would measure the dollar value of domestic duties performed by outside help. If this emancipation from dishpan hands ever becomes law, I hope the payment is retroactive. I could retire; although I confess my occasional fling with a mop is not worth 10 bucks an hour. . Twenty-five cents is closer to the mark. But there's·more to being a wife than callouses. Lawmaker breaks the Golden 'rule' My principal contribution is that of a Live-In Therapist. I'm available all hours for my husband's anxieties, compulsions, guilt trips, and pent-up hostilities against automobile mechanics. Bill's principal trauma was flunking kindergarten because he never learned to put things back where they belong - and he still can't get the hang of it. Most therapists charge a hundred an hour, but I'd give my spouse a cut rate because he ignores my advice. My medical consultations are also rejected. Getting my spouse to a doctor requires weeks of delicate negotiations that can't be measured in dollars and cents. As for nursing a sick hu sband-that deserves hazardous combat pay. Another traditional and uncompensated duty of a homemaker is that of the family Excuse-Giver in breaking boring dates. Especially with sensitive in-laws. Through years of experience women have mastered the art of white to tattle-tale gray lies, projecting just the right amount of sincerity and crestfallen disappointment. It's no easy task convincing your sister-in-law why you and your spouse can't attend her Masked Ball for the Preservation of the Mississippi Glow Worm. A wife's intuition should also count as a valuable asset, but I doubt men would pay for it. This is the instinct that compels females to empty their husbands' pockets for signs of infidelity. In later yea rs the same voice warns them to look in their mate's pockets to sec if he made the bank·deposit. But cheer up, girls! Things could be worse. In Japan a husband spends only 24 minutes a day on domestic concerns; and that's probably the time he takes to rate he wife's Tea Ceremony performance. Nancy Mcintyre Is• resident of Lnguna Niguel. By Russ Loar, Staff Writer A t age 70, Newport Beach Assemblyman Gil Ferguson is once again thinking about a new career. Age, as far as Ferguson is concerned, is irrelevant. "l happen to be part of the first generation to break the stereotype of senior citizens," says Ferguson, who lives on Balboa Island with wife Anita when he's not in Sacramento. "We were the first generation to break all of the laws about how old you have to be to get a job." Ferguson, a conservative Republican now in his fifth term in the state Assembly, is planning on running for the state Senate seat held by Marian Bergeson if she becomes an Orange County supervisor. He has also been encouraged to run for secretary of state, but Ferguson says he'd rather move into the upper house of the state Legislature. Ferguson was not always indifferent about his age. When he was a 47";Year-old lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps, concerns about age led to his decision to retire after a distinguished combat record 'We were the first generation to break alt of the laws about how old you have to be to get a job.' including service in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. "I was older than the other lieutenant colonels. · Because of my combat record I stood an excellent chance to be promoted," he says. "But l figured if I went up for general I would be 51 years old by then, and they had never selected a general over 50." So al age 47, Ferguson took his Purple Heart and left the military after 26 years of service which included making a documentary film in Vietnam, setting up an advertising bureau for the Marines in Washington D.C., and running a newspaper and radio station at Camp Pendleton. "I told my wife•, I've got to get a job -I've got to start something-new," Ferguson says. His timing was critical. Probst just finished his stint playing Division I basketball at the University of San Diego and plans to try playingjn Europe. In one semifinal, the '81s were pitted against the '90s. The '81 team, a ClF championship squad featuring Mark Spinn, Jeff Pries, Steve Moore and Dan He ss, has won the tournament twice. However, on this day, the '90s, with Warren Johnson, Mark Aint, John Paulsen and John Murphy used its size inside to emerge with a 43-38 triumph. In an intriguing matchup featur· ing teams one year apart. the '87s and '86s clashed in the other semi- final. The .'87 team featured Mar- cus Muller-Stach, Darren Morris and Chris Hook, and kept it close until the last few minutes. But the '86 team pulled away at the end for a six-point victory. Tqurrtllment champions the pre- vious years were '90 in 1992, 76 in 1991 and '81 in 1990 and 1989. With the exceetion of 19n, each class back to 75 was represented in this year's event. The Dukes, -however, may not have seen the last of the Capitals, coached by Newport Beach resi· dent Robert Van't Hof. "l think Sacramento and Phoe· ni.x are about even in the division, and they're both dangerous," Dukes Coach Greg Patton said. "I know we 're going to iee them again in the playoffs.
