What h.tppcncd Sunday m the Oasis Cen1er wrn) either a blissful ballet or a boggling burlesque depending upon one's formal education in the performing nrts. Local Scene Whatever it was, it was wild beyond belief. The ovcrnow audience, including jaded theater-goers who thought they'd een everything the stage has to offer, went bananas. Their cheers and laughter rocked 1hc staid venue, normally a harigout for us elderly types, and brea1hed new life into the center's credo, "W•'re not senior ci1izens, we're recycled teen-agers.'' Two of the more bizarre performers," ho had been allotted a mere 45 seconds 10 display their \irtuos1ty in a pas de dcux, \\ere sent into near-panic by the audience reception. The cnlirc program, starting wi1h an all·Gcrsh'~'" concert pcrformed·by the brigh1c:.t )Oun,g talent in all of Pilolland (before things degenerated in the ballet AROUND TOWN equcnces), wns a scene strai&ht out of "The Music Man." In th1~ cnse, our town's Profcs~r Harold Hill was e\.Cr·bouncy Jttt Sharen, who danced in big-tine hO\\-S before recently opening her studio, Chorus Linc, on East Coast Highway. She's the most sparkling addition 10 Greater Newport since they invented the ocean. So, with all that devout dedic:uion 10 The Muse of Dance, "hat lunacy led Jett to conceive und choreograph ballet sequences designed to send shock waves from Corona 10 Kirov? Well, firstly, there was all that Intent talent in the town. It took a trained eye to perceive, uncover, refine and polish once-frustrated villagers who simply goua dance. Take, please, Dr. Kevin Priestley, who might've lived out his years as a chiropractor if he hadn't been discovered. Underneath that massive 255·pound, 6·fOOt·6 frame, there was a sylph waiting to emerge. In the Duck Lake number, he was transformed from a waltzing whale into a waddling waterfowl. Joining him in the male corps de ballet \\-ere such ingcnues as Ron Yeo, the world's most acrobatic archi1ec1; urban planner Dan Dunham, who weighed ,in at 220 pounds; Marc Monroe, a wallpaper con1rac1or who made the best of the sticky situation; identical m·ins Robert and J ohn Rubun, whose piroueues ga'e C\Cf)One double vision, and elcc1rical engineer Christopher Charpentier. whose :ir:ibcsques were, well, electrifying. P.irJdt: Oh, had I prcviously mentioned that lheir ballet slippers were oronge·painted S\\im fins? Or that their all-white tutus and headgear were seductive enough for call) to the vice squad? The namboyant "Can Can" finale brought down the house, no t to mention scvcrttl of the meatier dancers. The Chorus Linc's resident gymnast, Charles Tam, executed high·Oying maneuvers "orthy of a Newport Beach investment counselor, and the home-grown maidens were downright dazzling. Dunker Royal Radtke porirayed an 18th Century cour1esan, who should'vc seuled out of court. In this Theater of the Absurd, ht) appearance suggested Mother Goo~c -bu1 his cigar-wielding partner didn't dare. Also, someone should've told the prim.i ballcrinn that a lace ran is supposed to be nuuered, and shouldn't be handled a-, 1hough he was swauing nics. As one cntic commented, "This performance could give 'outrageous' a bad name." But a marvelous time was had by all, and there's a movement afoot for an encore - for a charity fund-raiser somewhere, if Jen can keep her high·priced troupe together, and the community can surv ive ano1her attack of balletomane poisoning. One wag already has suggested a name for the sequel. For the next appearance of the "Duck uke" ensemble, how about the "Nut-Quacker Suite"? Jury Kobrin's column runs H'cdnesdny nndFridoy.
