Eight arriving nights were either delayed or diverted to Los Angeles lnlern ational Airport and fou r departing nights were delayed, according to airport spokesperson Pat Ware. ' The runway lights went out at 8:26 p.m. and were turned back on at 10:26 p.m. after a new electric regulator was installed. It was the first time in fou r years the runway lights had gone out, according to Ware who said the problem is correc1ed. The lights went out during a lull in airport arrivals and departures. Noise regulations prohibit arrivals by commercial aircraft after 11 p.m. and departures after 10 p.m., but Ware said fou r nights departed after 10:40 p.m. Wednesday because of the delay. Their father was. \\ith them. His voice turned lo a whisper as soon as I walked in. . Being the rather curious person I :im, I tried inconspicuously to overhear "'hat was being said. No luck. The two boys, who looked 12-years-old but were actually a few yea rs older, tried to hold bnck the tears when I came in, as if they were embarrassed. Maybe th ey were. Around the rim Ten minutes earlier, I saw the bO)S. Yoalking off the court after losing in the finals of their ngc·division match. They seemed OK. It also seemed that :ifter their father got a hold of them, :ill hell broke loose. In the restroom, these kids were ba'"ling ' hysterically, like they'd just been sentenced to the guillotine. It bothered me. J thought, 'Why doesn't their father encour:igc them, pat them on the back, promi..,e to buy them a McDonald's lunch on the w::iy home?' There didn't seem to be an ounce of compassion. Why m::ike your ~ids feel worse ::ifter a loss? How much p'r~ssure was put on these kids, anyw::iy? Although it was a subject J had been toying with, it was the final motivation for The Pressure Game (a four-part series which began last Saturday :ind wrapped up on Thursday). Hey. nobody likes to lose. You can, ho" c,·er, learn a lot from it. You learn from mistakes. You learn how to be a good sportsman. You appreciate winning more. You can go back and analyze the m:ilch, or game, or whatever it is you play, and say, 'This is what I did wrong, this is '"here I need to improve.' It's ..,implc, common sense. You become :i belier competitor because of it. B ut these narrow-minded parents who abusively criticize their child -gifted athlete or not -demand success, expect greatnc!.S, dbhonor the meaning of compe11 11on, and put enormous pressure on their kid to win, arc barking up the wrong tree. They themselves will not enjoy their child'!. athletic endeavors as much as they could. Worst of all, it'll probably come back to haunt them. Kids remember. I sec more and more parents nowadays putting too much pressure on their child.
