R on Yeo is fortunate be doesn't live on Balboa Island. With street names like Diamond, Sapphire and Emerald, Yeo would
have a difficult time accomplishing what he's done in bis neighborhood the past two years.
Yeo is leading a community beautification project in a Corona dcl Mar neighborhood where the streets bear botanical
names. Residents and businesses have planted poppies on Poppy, marigolds on Marigold and orchids on Orchid.

Don Strauss thought the coastal charm
of Newport was worth defcndina against

the time he was elected to the City
Cou ncil in 1978, Stnuss was a stcadCast,
slow·growlh proponent.
He was in the minority.
"II was a pro-growth period on the
Council," says Strauss. 77. who spent 12
year~ as a Newport Beach city
cuuncilm:in. "If you were goina to
m:.11n1ain any other kind of stance, it was
going to be a minority stance. 1 just
thought growth was going too fast."
