from the political trenches. City Coun·
cilman Peter Buffa emerged tbis·weck.,
declaring his intentions to run -a sec-
ond time -for a scat on the South
Cout Air Quality Management District
board.
And Buffa, who ducked out of the
political limeliJht alter k>sing a nasty
Republican pnmaiy fight to Rep. Dana
Robrabacbcr in 1992, believes he
chances are better this time because or
new lcfllation that would change the
district s election process in Orange
County.
The new law would not only require
challcnaers., but inc:umbent.s to aamer a
~thirds vote of city councils repre·
scntina ~thirds of the cities' popula·
tion 10 win.
"With the new legislation, the rules
have changed." Buffa said. "ll doesn't
level the rlayin' field completely, but it
does leve it a little." •
This is the sec6,. time around for
the a.ta Mesa conservative, who in
Januuy 1992, failed to dethrone Yorba
Linda C.Ouncilman Henry Wedaa from
his scat on the board. Because Buff a
couldn't muster a two-thirds vote,
Wedaa was able to retain hi.s scat.
The battle to oust Wcdaa is seen IS

The t\\O powerhouses may-well find
themselves across the net in Saturday's
final s, a prelude to two showdowns in Sea
View League play, as well as potential
matchups in the CIF Division I playoffs,
and ensuing stale playoffs.
There will be six pools of fou r teams in
the Division I tournament. The pool play
starts at 8:30 a.m. The top two teams in
each pool will -proceed to the Division I
~ single elimination
championship
tournament at Edison,
while the third and
fourth place teams will
pla) in the Division 11
championships at
Hunlington Beach on
Saturday afternoon. .
Pla}'offs will start at 3
o'clock Saturday. All
