Mayor Oarence Turner and other council
members have said publicly thar inetdents

of the shootings.

when 1 fuse blows we can't brush our teeth.
Last week our ancient vac:uum cleaner wheezed her last and
went to Vacuum Valhala; my husband and I were confronted
with buyina a new machine. It wu a toss-up whether to replace
our busted setr·dcaninj oven. expiring
espresso machine, or vacuum cleaner. We
opted for.the latter since the carpets haven't
been cleaned since our Groundhog Day party.
We tracked down a bargain machine for S7S
with one serious flaw. It had to be assembled.
The owner's manual w.u crammed with
enough diagrams and instructions \O erect a
space station. I agonized whether Bill and I
were too old to grapple with such
complexities, but my husband was determined
to meet the ch:illenge. We finally decided that
pulling our two heads together, we'd have

four frontal lobes between us to1igure out
how to snap all the parts together -without
hnving three pieces left over.
Bill plunged into the project with the
confidence of an· elecuical engineer, deftly laying out the
multitude of components on the coffee table. It was an ·
auspicious beginning. However, one essential nut and bolt were
missing. (For want of a nut, a kjngdom was lost.).We
desperately searched for the parts in all the logical places to no
avail. That was our mistake. In the befuddled 60s one never
loses things in obvious places. Independent studies show the
trash bin produces more lost keys, documents, and eyeglasses
than anyone cares to admit.
A fter retrieving our precious thingamajigs that had been
chucked out with the shipping cartons. our projccr
proceeded warily. one faltering step at a time. What we thought
would be our lirtest hour turned into our finest six hours.
building a crc11ture that would roar into life with its lungs
billowing, and its gleaming headlight eyes peering into dusty
corners. A family pet we could park in the closet.
I'm now conversant with agi1ator brush rolls, carpet settings,
furniture nozzles, and wands -the kind that perform more
mundane tasks than turning frogs into princes.
In scanning the safeguards in the owner's manual, I was
distressed to le:tm the dress code for vacuuming forbids bare
feet, my favori1e foo1wear. My old vacuum couldn't care a
squeak if I toiled in my binhday suit, but it was tolerant of our
casual lifes1yle. The manual also warned the new machine was
for household use only. Too bad. I'd planned ro use the
furniture nozzle to vacuum our dog, who•s better upholstered
th.in our sofa.
The cover of the booklet features an inspiring picture of what
a completed vacuum cleaner is supposed to look like. Our
machine is fairly similar if you squint your eyes.

when Irvine offered him prime, Newport
acreage on what is now Irvine Terrace to
build a hospitaJ. But there was a catch -
Irvine's doctor was an osteopath.
