The shelter was open and in full
swing by 4 ~.m. Cots. were bein4 put up.

Each shelter I hav.e worked In a disaster

The Red Cross Shelter at the l)'tn in
Corona dcl Mo.r Hi&h School had the
biggest heart or all. I can't say enough
about the IS to 20 Red Cross trained .
youth in emergency -services. These
Corona dcl Mar Hiah School students
went right 10 work registering viftims,
setting out chairs, answering phone and
aiding the fire victims in any way they ·
could.
I can only think of one v.'Ord for these
kids and that's outstanding. The people
of Newpon Beach and surrounding
areas came to the shelter with offers of
food , clothes and their homes, anytbinJ
' to aid the victim.

Stephen Wagner's legacy (Oct. 28) to
our school system reminds me of an old
Chinese children story. In this case a
boy n:imed Ah 0, instead of admitting
that he tripped and reu, told the
on·lookers that he was merely trying to
grab a handful or sand.
It is my belief that our school board
members during Wagner's tenure should
be held ultimately responsible for havir1g
left such a large sum of much need tax
dollars stolen from right under their
noses. Let's hope our current and future
board members will turn out to be
better students.

reminds me of listening to an old tired
cow put out to pasture.
It's about time we have a supervis2r
who clearly defines her views with
respect to these brid&es. which would be
a nightmare for the city of Costa Mesa.
I remember the countless hours spent
campaignin& on bcbaJf of Measure M.
Now I feel fooled because this very
same measure that was supposed to
enhance our quality of lire is now being
used as a sword to threaten our
community members by withholdina
transponation funds for our city. '
My solution: keep the funds bis daddy
county government, you've never paid
much attention to Costa Mesa anyway.
And the alternative: we as citizens, if
and when needed. could consider a valid
1n1ti:ativc that ~ could raise ttic money
from within our city for transportation
imprO\'ement for ounctves and not have
the debacle of havina these bridges held
against us. As a lona·t~e resident of
the city of Costa Mesa, I myself oppose
these bridges fervcntty.

Wilson, 1990 may have
been the high point of

Orange C.Ounty voters.
While longtime Wilson
loyalists -such as
billionaire Don Bren and Irvine
Company front man Larry lbomas -
arc still in the pemor's comer, m:any
GOP activists In Orange County have
tired of Wilson'• consistent departure
from conservative principles. Indeed,
they've tired of pbematorial leadership
without attention to principle at all.
In this context. Wilson's recent and
Ions-awaited dedslon on Prop. 174 may
be the 11raw which finaUy breaks the
back of local ~ for Wilson in next
year's p bematoriil election. ·

Wilson spoke out in opposition to
Proposition 174. As Wilson explained it,
his "phik>tophical support for parental
choice" wu outweiJhed by the potential
costs of measure to the state budget and

Voucher proponents dispute this
calculation. but that's-beside the point
now. After months of fencc-stntddling
on the most im~rlan,t public policy
issue to come btfore California voters
since Prop. 13 in 1916, Gov. Wilson
finally made up his mind. At least he
did so before today!
Reaction to the governor's dcosion
was swift. Th:inkful for the govcrnor·s
st>lnd, voucher opponents called

What sort of dcci ion was u? ln rruth,
it's probably a combination of both. a
little courage :ind a 101 of poh11cs. Yet
by next June, pundits may lool. back on
Wilson's handling of Prop. 17~ as his
politicnl Waterloo. c pecially an Orange
County where support in 1990 was
critical to Wilson's election.
Waitina until the waning moments of
the campaign to toke a public position
on school vouchers can h:irdly be ~lied
courageous. Had Wilson come out
ngalnst this initiative \\'hen he called for
a special election. or when the polls
Indicated a much closer race, that would
have been courageous.
B ut taking a public stand after a new
state-wide poll showed only 22
percent of the \'Otcrs favoring the
initiative creates the appearance that
Wilson's decision was Ill lea.st panially
calculated to rcOcct public sentiment.
If Wilson wos more commilted to
principles thin to political ombitaon he
\\-Ould have stuked out a position on
.cllool choice long and let the political
chips fall where they may. This is wh:it
we miaht expect a courageous and
principled leader 10 do.
But Wilson's been governor Ion&
enough for most Californian to know

a paycheck for playin1 bas-
ketball. Even if you'r~ 26.
For Chuck McGavran, who has
dished off passes ever slnc:e he can re-
member, the National Adult Basketball
Association just mi&ht be his ticket to
Europe, Ausrralia or South ~mcrica.
Most or the games that McGavran
plays arc at the beach -competitive,
)'Ct fri endly. When Sundays come, it's a
whole new b'nll game.
"ll gets pretty physical and serious
on the weekends," said McGavran,
who once played against Shaqu~e
O'Ncal, when McGnvran's 01apman
Universi1y tclll'D played at LSU in 1991.
McG avran, a fonncr all-league point
guard at Newport Harbor High and
Orange Coast College's career and sin-
gle-season assist leader, is one; of the···
oldest players on his Nariona,. Adult
Basketball Association (NASA) team.
Many of his teammates have played, or
hope to play, profess1onaJly.

"I've 1ot to stay in shape somehow. I
still like the q>mpetitivcness. I talked
10 Jeff Fryer (former Corona dcl Mar
standout) before he left .for Germany,
and I talked to Mike Kelly, who I
played with at Orang'e Coast. and bis
1eam just won a champions~ip in Aus·
tralia. Kelly's always trying to get me to
go over there. 84t I just don't know."
McGavran believes he can .play with
the Europeans and Australians. On his
NABA squad, teammate Jc(( Bickm0rc
averaged nearly 40 points per aame in
Australia last season.
Bµt when you're 26-years-old and
still needing to finish school, P.laying
basketball overseas somehow doesn't fit
in McOavran's mind. He's been burned
out from the intensity on the courts
once before.
"After J played at OCC for two
years (1985-86, '86-87), I played at Cat
State Northridge for a year. th en I got
burned out," be said. "I took a couple
or 'years off and helped coach at New-
port Harbor with Jerry DeBusk, 1hcn J
phlyed at Chapman in 1990-91."
For now, McGavran continues to
enjoy feeding no-look passes under-
neath to has teammates. The response
or the crowd may be minimal, but in
McGavran's heart, it's where 1hc b:ilt
belonp.

For others, they're good enough to play prore~
sionally in Europe, Australia, ~.:>uth America or in
the Continental Basketball Association (CBA}. Shll.

to-mid 20s -some frcsb ou1 or college, some not so
fresh -arc talented pieces or b:isketball rrnachine
without a tru~ playground.
Newport Beach's National Adult BMkc:.tball As·
sociation, the brainchild of Gene McOintock, a 47-
year-otd Corona del Mar nWt and I longtime bas·
kctball referee, plans to give these players their ftx
-and like a minor league 'ystcm, the dream or
eventually hooking on with a professional basketball
team.
"The type or player who plays here 1s of CBA cal·
iber or European, someone who is lookin& to get in
or is just comina back,.. McCJintock said. ..They
wanl to keep their hand in it, and hope to act
