"Very fortunately Id. about that time," he
says with a chuckle. ',-Jiat helped a lot."
But serf>usly folks. Freeman is rarely serious about
anything: For a man who spent 42 years i n the
wholcu.lc lumber business., his sense or humor is
anything but wooden.
A writer whose worl has appeared in newspapers
ipcluding the Daily Pilot and natK>naJ ma1azine1 such
as Reader's Digest and Sports Illustrated, Freeman
traces his wcy sense of humor back to his days as a
member of the Balboa Island Sculling and Punting
Society in the early 1960s. It was an organization or
"millionaires and bums" and some famous canoonists
includin, Virgil Partch and Phil and Frank
lnterlandi.
As a member of the happy-go-lucky organization,
Freeman helped plan the group01 "Train Trip to
Catalina Island."
"We were going to get a barge and a tow boat, ·
transrcr a railroad car to the barge and low it over to
Catalina -that was 1he plan," Freeman says. "And
it worked."
Later on, they took a bQa1 trip to Las Vegas..
Looking back on life, Freeman frequently sayi.
"'There's a funny story there." It's been that kind of
tire.
During World War II , Frccp]an was tbe captain of
a frci&hlcr based in the Panama Ca.aal. fenyina
supplies to mililary bases in the-region that were
established to protect 1he vital shipping lane from
attack.
He jumped at the opportunity 10 make a shipping
run back to the United States after discovcrina a
fairly obscure military regulation. The rcplation
stated that as a member of the Army Transportation
Corps, he could not be ·sent back overseas once he
was returned to the Stales.
His strategy was successful, but much to his
chaarin, Freeman ended u"p shuttling military
personnel on leave from Newport Bay to Catalina
Island in a 104-foot Army rescue boat. It was a big
1,1t\down for Freeman and his former crew members
assigned to the new duty.
"We'd take them over in the morning and back at
night and we used to drink like hell,'' Freeman says.
'"We wanted to be thrown out of the Army."
In 1980, Freeman was a&ain associated with a
decidedly odd organization dedicated 10 frivolous
endeavors -lhe Dull Men'5 Oub of Newport Beach.
As club vice president, Freeman was oCten quoted in
newspaper stories about the club. Actually, all club
members were vice presidents.

The Dull Men's Oub used to march in lhe annual
Ooo Dah Parade in Pasadena, ·weari.n& suits and ties
and equipped with leaf blowen. One year, they each
held outslretchcd dog leashes and harnesses -minus

the dogs -while other members carried a giant fire hydrant, oCfering an

Jn JQa,J, the dub made plans to hold the Finl and Last Great Western
Underachieve11 Ball. Nothing came of it.
Freeman is still wrilil'lg and one of his sa1irical columns appeared in
September in a local newspaper. It wu a humorow prolest a1ainst the needless
complcxily of his new car's instnuncnt panel. He is cspeciaUy lroublcd by the

Once 11 t:1lented amateur golfer, Freeman says he's moving kind of slow these
days, his hearin& is failing and his eyesight is gelling worse. It's hard for him to
read end he docsn·t write as much as he used 10. Ou1 his sense of humor is still
strong.
