his life had ab1'0it come to
an end.

his wife and his younsest son
within a matter of months. His
wife Nancy died in Januaf)'
1991 after a five-year battle with
caoccr. H is son Brian,. 26, died
in May after four mon~ in a
coma as a resull of a car·

actually v.·car b;ill gowns, at least some of
' them. To complement lhc ladies. 1he
male counterpart of the house is nearly
all bl::ick 1ic. Or pink tie, blue 1ie or
rainbow tie. but tUJJ:cdo-clad nonetheless.
Wh en there is a dramatic moment on
stage, and there Dre plenty of them in
this opera (and in most), a deep sigh is
audible across the house. Some1imes a
lone cry is heard from a devoted n1cn\bcr
or the audience as a particularly high
and emo1iooal note ls reached by
Domingo in the: role of R;afa cl Ruiz, a
star-crossed tore:.dor in the middle of a
'-we triangle.
The object of his affeclion is Veronica

contemporary opera parade out lor their
accolades.
Once: again, lhc s~ is in the house
as mi.ch as it is on si-agc. Opera
demands a dirterenl kind o( response
from its participants. People seem to rise
10 the occasion. l"hey act ls if they are
feeling something, learning something,
experiencing something on many levels.
It is. or course, lhe music, 1he dr:1ma, the
setting working its magic.
Somehow it elevoitcs the crowd,
electrifies it, mesmerizes i1.

rehearsal or the performance. After all ii
is a H ispanic opera, perrorrned in
Spanish.

loving the opera. They had never

it was a product of their own culture."
Obviously, you don't have to be a
me mber or black tie society to be
mesmerized.
