He drove a taxi while allcnding college and obtained a maslcrs degree in composition and orchestration from the American Conservatory or Music. Aflcr college he worked as a music contractor and played bassoon for the Houston Symphony. In 1957 he moved to Californ ia and rour years later, mlrried his wife, Janet. ··she is a ¥t'Onderful human being," he says. "It's hard being married 10 a musician." The couple now have five children. HAVING A OOOD TIMI The 65-year-old Costa Mesa resident is known arourid campus for his eccentric style and sense of humor. CITYSIDI Coffee cart owner fights closure with Costa Mesa City COuncll Patrick O 'Brien "''ill fight fo r 1he right to operate his drive-lhru coffee cart on 17th S1rce1 near Newport Bouleva rd in Costa Mesa after the planning commission lasl week ordered him to close down. The Los Angek s·bascd man. who took over the cart's operations nine months ago. filed his appeal JUSI in time Monday, the last day he could reques1 lhe City Council 10 lake up the issue. The commission's decision, which gave O'Brien un1il the end of business Thursday to remove his cart from the lot, will be suspended until the council hears the issue Feb. 7.
