BY BAJlll Y FA u LKN £ R, .._:;:;;- SPOan \\'iuna A s public funding for high school athletics .continues to dwindle, today's boosters are expected to contribute more than their two cents worth from the bleachers. Whether it's bank rolling a $300,000 footb:ill weight training facility or supplying a couple dozen b;ills a week for the frosh·soph tennis team, . administrators and coaches in · the Newport-Mesa Unified School District have come to rely upon the supportJOf the community, specificatfly parent/ booster groups. But as high schools continue to pass the hat for \'ital f\nan cial support, administrators and coaches remain careful to avoid transferring the balance.or decision-making power. "Booster clubs have been a tremendous source of support for athletics, and other programs across the board on our campus," Corona del Mar. High Principal Tom Jacobson said. "As they contribute more and more to an organization, it's natural to want more say in how those organizations are run. Though some' area coaches acknowledge their association with parents isn't without cc;>nnict, they said an occasional combative parent/booster is toJerable, considering the dh idends an active booster group can add to the bottom line. ·•A lot of coaches I've talked to have horror stories. but I've had a very, very positive experience with boosters," said Jeff Brinkley, entering his ninth season as Newport Harbor High's head football coach. "I knock on wood, but l haven't really had any problems with my parents." J Corona del Mar High's·Dave Holland. who resigned Jan. "It's like they say: 'There's no free lunch,' " ell.plained the 58-year-old Holland. "Today's coaches do a real high-wire balancing act with boosters. What mnkes Pelica n Hill so unique from other top golf courses? 1 1hink the uniqueness of ii is the ocean. I mean; 1h:11's what draws people there, that and the quality of the golf course. (Architcc~l Tom Faziq has just doni an outst:1nding fob -he has two golf courses wi1h totally different personalicics: The Ocean Course, 'Yith all t,he trees that were planred and the shrubs and Oowers and large greens -along with nacural vegetation -and 1hen he turned right around and built the Link.$ Golf Course, which is all narural vegetation. The re!ipon:.e has been real favorable. Our people work real close with the Fish and Wildlife and 1hc California State Park Agencies. We try lb preserve wherever we possibly can ro work with the environmentalists and to date there have been no complaints that l'm aware of. And I think both agencies, they and us, work real close, hand·in-hand, 10 make sure that things are under control 24 hours a day. Since the Learning Center and Practice Facility opened last summer, what kind of programs have been established at Pelican Hill? We tried 10 have the driving range and the learning center as a kind of stand alone amity. lt is part of the golf course, yet ii 's really not. I've got to believe it's No. 18 on the Ocean Course. And 1 think the reasons for it is you've got :i pretty long cany oft the tee. The hole itself measures out to 454 yards, which is a quite lengthy par-4. And then you've got a canyon in front of you and 1ou've got canyons down the left side, so, you know, an errant shot left results in a lost ball .. , (llishit off the lee, lost ball. And if you are fortunate enough to hit a drive out there with someone, you've still got an awfully long second shot. And it's guarded with sand traps on the left and a big swale down the right. So it really puts a premium on a long, long carry. T be green's big, but you have an opportunity lo putt the green in th e back right-hand corner, so depending if we were in a tournament condition, or just every day conditions, that pin place proves to be a real plus or minus, depending.on where to set it. You Lalk about a course . maturing. How long typically would it take for a course to mature for it to host a tournament, and is the grass primarily what you mean by maturing? l think it has obviously a lot to do with it. And again, are you looking for a major championship, are you looking for sponsor championships, a sectional championship and a tour si te? 1t just depends. As far as maturity goes, obviously grass has a lot to do with it. The whole area flas a lot to do with it. If you arc goi ng to have a tournament you've got a lot of things such as parking element:., transportation, finishing the whole project. We've got two sites here th a1 are master planned for hotels. We just made a deal with Disney where we are going to do some time share units. It has somewhat or a rippljng ef(ec1, the exposure that we'\lc had and the word of mouth, if you will, has a big rippling effect and it's saaning to take hold as well. And I think again as we become more and more of a destination property, rcson destination, that's going to grow. Why did you leave PGA West lo tome to Pelican ffill'! I had no inteotions of leaving other than J finally got down here and I'd heard a lot about Pelican Hill. And I took one drive around the golf course and I can ho.nestly tell you from that moment on I just fell in love with the place. And I wanted to be a part of it. I don't know that I've seen anything more spectacular than Pelican Hill in all honesty. Monterey is something very, very special and Hawaii is something very, very special and I think that for Southern California this is going to be a very, very special place as well. PGA West is spectacular with it's four golf courses, and they utilized the mountain ranges and the desert for six or seven months of the y~ar and you are not going to beat It. The difference is we'\le got a year-round clien1ele. We are going quite well 12 months ,out of the year. And PGA West is really restricted to about seven, maybe eight, months out of the year. Not 10 take anything away from PGA West, to me it's a fabulous resort and maybe one of the best in the country because of its four golf courses and two clubhouses. Bui I wanted something a little different. And l really like the Pelican Hill Golf Courses. I like the cool air, not the hot air. And 1here is a lot m&re to do at Pelican Hill, 100.
