We asked readers: What do you think of the law? ls it fair? 0 ls the three strikes fair? Well, we have a choice. We can either do it or wai t until the fourth or fifth strike. Actually, if it was the second strike, it would confine the same cri minal. Ninety-five percent repeat again and again. About 65% of the criminals in prison are repeaters and 30% are not caught yet or at all. Shall we keep,Jetting them out fo r the 5% who are rehabilitated? JOHN RUSSELL . Costa Me~p 0 The new three Strikes law is fai r, but it's not right. It's pathetic that this is the best · idea we could come up with to stop crime. Dt)terrence through fear is never better than deterrence through education and understanding, or through community efforts. The crime story today proves that we have more crime laws today than ever yet it still continues to grow and our coml}lunities arc falling apart. We are losing touch with one another, and that's where the real answer lies. The way to make change is through people, not through more laws. 0 Jn regard to a Mr. Jeffrey Hart, l think he should be put away before he kills somcbopy. 1 think anybody who carries a concealed weapon and allegedly draws it on a police officer, especially after he had the other two convictions ... I think there is no doubt that this law shpuld be carried out. After all, what do we want to do, have him kill somebody before we can put him away? EDWARD RICE Newport Beach \. 0 The absurd policy that cities are opting not to sell confiscated guns is sending th e wrong message. First, this implies that guns are evil in themselves. ll is akin to saying cities shouldn't sell confiscated motor vehicles because they may be used by a drunken driver to kill somebody. Second, this is pure politics. h is designed to placate the feelings of the liberal, warm and fuzzy, feel-good crowd whose sound·good, do-nothing policies have brought society to the point where it is now. Third, it is a lie. It will do absolutely nothing ·to curb crime o~ violence and everybody knows it. l think it is wrong to promote a lie, or am 1 behind the times? Fourth, it take~ badly needed resources away from citi~s that have been devastated in recent times further degr<lding the quality of our communities, which in all probability will increase crime. Ttie best thing that cities could do is take the revenue from these sales and help soc- iety to promote the mo rals and. values that are the only solu· tions to our crime problems. · WILLIAM A. Bv }Ef'F C HESEN, srons \\'lllTU C orona del Mar High's pitchers know that it is difficult to win if you do not score. Through the first 13 games of the season, the young arms have made it a'' fully tough for CdM to ever lose. In fact, the team has not lost since March 5, a streak of 11 straight games. Consider a few num- bers: ' •The pitchers have a cumulative ERA of 1.48, and have allowed two runs or fewer in eight of the 13 games. •Seniors Jeff Bowman and Dan MacMillan have ERAs of 2.10 and 2.24 respectively, and they are bringing th e staff E~A up. • During the first eight games of the winning streak, Sea King pitchers allo,..:cd one earned run, for an ERA of 0.13. Over the 11 -game streak, the pitchers huve an ERA of 1.00 and have held op- ponents to a .144 batting average. •Corona's pitchers average 8.3 st rikeouts and allow only 4.4 hits per seven innings. Coach Matt Lundin and his pitching coach, Brett O!>borne, have been blessed with a pitching staff which is the envy of the Sea View League. 1~ is ar- guably the deepest in Orange County, with se niors Bowman , MacMillan, and Br~:~\ Wills, junior Mau Friend, and sophomores Kevjn.; Stuart and Chad Johnson setting opponents down w11h regularity. Lundin is among those who are in awe of the pitchers' early successes. .. 1 I.now our pitchers arc doing a great job, but "hen you look at the numbers it is almost hard to believe," Lundin said. "When you actually see how good they've done, it's remarkable." About the only ones who are nOl surprised by the pitching staffs dominance are the pitchers them- selves. The m~turc of youth and experience has blended them into a cohesive onit which is comfort· able in any situation. ''We're a big family,'' Stuart said. MacMillan uses the same collective interpretation of the swffs success. "The outlook is bright for the rest of the sctlson," he said. "We're consistent, and we throw strikes. If someone gets hit, there's always another person who e<1n come in with a fresh arm . We have a lot of co nfidence in each other." MacMillan, a four-year starter, has earned his share of the spotlight. He fo llows in the footsteps of • • • 1r1n ~ Sea Kings riding crest of 11-game winning streak,. thanks to pitching-rich ·staff. Tha1's a fact , it's that good a pitch." , The pitching has been the backbone of the cur- rent winning streak, which began when the offense was struggling. The team ERA has not been above 2.00 since March 8, and reached a low of 0.91 after done: throw a perfect game. "No doubt in my mind, he is the best pitcher in the Sea View League," Lundin said of MacMillan. ''He's the guy everyone around the league talks about. MacMillan is his control. I cannot get over his strikeout to walk ratio (36 strik.eouts, four wal ks). To have a high school pitcher with that kind of con- trol is unheard of. "When Stuart gets into a rhythm, it's easy for him to go the distance," Lundin said. "He believes in his defense. He has gone the distance because he is a grouhd ball pitcher who lets the defense play for him. I know with Stuart on the mound, right around the corner is a double play ball. He knows how to get good outs, important outs." Lundin :.ind the pitchers credit .Osborne, a former assistant al La Quinta High, for the imprcs.,he start. His appro:.ich to pitching has nor only m:idc the pitchers comfortable, but has al o earned their respect and admiration. "You can have some pitchers with arms, but there has to be a concept," L:undin said. "\VhJl Ozzy's been able to do with these guys is not just the mechanics of pitching. Ouy's giving these gu)s the mental side of pitching. I think that the pitchers this year understand more about how to pitch on the mental side. Pitching coaches who know me· chanics are a dime-a-dozen. 13ut whar Ozzy i!> able to translate to the players has been incredible." Osborne insists that his approach is as simple as it sounds. "We want the pitchers throwing stril.es and getting ahead of hitters," he said. "If )'OU can throw strikes you can compete and win. I taught them what 1 was taught. They are kids who want to work, want to learn." • The pitchers return the compliment to Osborne, crediting him with their dominance. "Ozzy emphasizes competing, getting fi r!lt strikes," Stuart said. "We can relate to him und we are doing what he tells us (lo do)." "He doesn't change you r mechanics," John~on said. "Ozzy wants )'OU to have a clear head and just go do your job. He is really easy to understand." The Uf?plication of Osborne's concepts has led to success of phenomenal proportions. From a one- hiller by Bowman and MncMillan to three shutouts shared by the entire staff, the pitchers ha\e been fully dominating. Take, for example, Bowman's 21 stikeouts in less than 17 innings. "He has done an outstanding job," Lundin said. "He doesn't care \\here he is, on the infield, starting or relieving. He just wants to play. 1 like that in a player." • Osborne, who focuses more on the nu:rnccs of pitching, was more analytical of Dowrna n. "He throws a lot of different pitches, and keeps hitters off balance. He is tough lo pick up, which is why he is successful." Mention Friend's name and Lundin's face lights up. Although he has thrown less than. 12 innings so fa r, the right-hander's 13 strikeouts and 0.00 ERA attract attention.
