BY ltiA.JlNIB McLEOD, STAFF WklTla I t may not seem ~ike the typical mother-kid relationship, but Mary Ann Mealey and Rosebud have a special bond nonetheless. Mealey, a docent at the Orange County Fairground's Centennial Farm, has been bottle-feeding Rosebud, a baby goat, since it had to be separated from its ill mother following its March 3 birth. The Mesa Del Mar resident, who raised the kid in her home for five weeks, return· ed the animal to the farm Saturday. But it seems Mealcy's role as its caretaker has had quite an impact on the baby goat. Even now when it sees Mealey approach, it runs to her and lovingly nuzzles its head close to her, just like it would to its own mother. "This was a new experience for me," said Mealey, 59. "I learned a lot. It was really an accomplishment that she survived." Kidding -around -: . Mealey said she was in charge of opera· lions for Bailey lhc._da)' ids were born and offer~d to take the ncwboras home. Within the first two days, Bailey said, one kid died because it wasn't strong enough to survive without the nutrients found only in its mother's !llilk. But Rosebud, which Mealey has named because of its fondness for her rose bushes, grew s trong through Mealey's bottle-feedings of powdered goat milk. As the animal grew strong, Mealey invited · \. neighborhood children to visit the goat so it would be used to interacting with children later on in its permanent home at Centennial Farm. "I think all children should have one (a , farm animal) for a while," Mealey saii:f. "It was fun for me because I had her when she was little and cute." Rosebud is the only kid of two born to a nubian goat at Centen· nial Farms to survive. The mother goat was diagnosed in February with an incurable virus and both offspring had to be taken from their mother and nursed by bottle. Although Mealey said it was hard to ·let go, sh.e has purposely tried to keep her distance and let Rosebud get used to the new surroundings. "lt's the voice and she recognizes met" she said. "The main bond is that you are providing food for them. That will slowly disappear now that she's being fed by someone c:Jse. I was just pleased it was .successful." He caught his first marlin at age 8 and worked on a number of sportfishing boats l~lly and in Mexico.
