DEJA VU Action In local waters remains . ·iteaily~to-reasonable ~ Costa Mesa's Craig Jacobs might feel it's better than that - after landing choice 40-pounder. L ocal fishing along the coast and at Catalina Island is holding up pretty well for anglers heading ou' on party boats as the neat is concentrating on barracuda, calico bass and bonito, and there 3re daily counts on white seabass . and yellowtail being recorded. Channel waters cooled a little lasj weekend a'nd shut off t~e bite along the beach for barracuda, but the action remained pretty steady on the back side of the island. Craig Jacobs of Costa Mesa, fishing on board the sportfisher Thunderbird, _ operating out of Dav~ Locker (673-1434), hooked into a 40-pound white scabass that-engulfed a live squid while the boat was anchored on a spot near Starlight. Squid are currently holding in 80 to 100 feet of water and this has been where fishermen on both open party and private boats have been concentrating in hopes of catching these big croaker. Most of the action ar Catalina Island is occurring on the back side of the island whe re a good mix of game fish seems to be holding. ln addition to seabass and yellowtail being sacked, there are near limits of calico bass and good sized bonito, some weighing up to 10 pounds, being landed along with a variety of bottom feeders. · Barracuda and a few white seabass have moved into 'shallower \\'.ater off th e Huntington Beach Oats. Barries are bining anchovies, sardines and chrome jigs, while scabass arc being hooked by anglers fishing a little off the bottom with dropper rigs and live sardines.
