Police say shoQting a far cry from incidents that plagued pier last year. Bv MARNIE Mc LEOD, STAFF Warna NEWPORT BEACH -After a short foot chase through the sand, police arrested a reputed Pomona gang member early Sunday evening after he allegedly fired shots on the beach near 30th Street, Jose Herrera, 2Q, was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery and held on SS0,000 bail. No one was injured in tho p.m. incident, which eye-witnesses ,said sent sev- eral lingering beach-goers ·scram- bling for cover. "We don't even know who he (Herrera) was shooting at -if anybody," said Sgt. AllOUND TOWN L OOK. THESE WERE • CONSENTING ADULTS - The place wasn't raided, rruiinly because Sheriff Brad Gates was an honored guest, but it could have been. I mean, some of the fund-raising stunts pulled at the American Diabetes Association Local Scene luncheon, staged the other day at Le Meridicn Hotel, bordere~ upon the ultra-naughty. There was the Rams' hunk, David Lang, doing a striptease worthy of Chippendale's. Even the team cheerleaders were awed. AlsD shirtless was 1 Robert Burns, owner and role model of Shape Up/Newport, performing his amazing series of belly-rolls. A Dolly Parton look-alike was • busting out all over. Speaking of push-ups, there were all sorts of volunteers pumping away on stage with up·and~dow~xerc1ses - with ea1..h exertion drawin'g applause and ringing the cash register. How could this be topped? Rising to the challenge was a startling Joan Rivers impersonator, the manic Dee.Dee Hanson. All she did was lie down on the stage while an unnamed gentleman paid to perform push-ups over her prostrate (but clolhed) body. If "Mrs. Clinton" had consented to do what "Ms. • Rivers" did in the name of sweet charity, it would've made headlines from here to Norm3ndy Beach. An alumnus of the 3rd Infantry Division mentioned to Monsignor Joseph M.
