THE NEWPORT BEACH • Morphin towel and Crt!li >Our Mi~ty ~~'( • Hay, Newport, It's nothing to get hostile abolit M ichael Evangelho is a 24- year-old aspiring film- maker from Toronto • ~nada. He already has big plans to produce his first nick -"Hor- ror at the Hostel," a fun little nail· biter set in a youlh hostel. ..... Yolml Editor's Notebook "l want to have it ready for the Sundance Film Festival (in Idaho)," says Evangelho, a cleancut, charm· ing, articulate graduate of New York University's film school. And to gather fodder for his • suspense thriller, Evangelho has been staying at the Colonial In n Youth Hostel in Huntington Beach. He hopes to return - after his concepts gel -to set the· film at the hostel on 8th Street near Downtown Huntington. . Dul the Colonial lnri itself isn't ' a horrific site, according to Evan-- gelho and other guests who sat on the porch one sunny afternoon, enjoying the weather, a cigarette or two and each other's company. ln fact, the warm, family atmos- ·phere and the camaraderie of the international clicntcle have made Evangelho a return customer. He stays at the Colqnial Inn ~henever he's in the area. "It's got the best reputation,'' said Evangelho. "And it beats staying in a hotel by yourself." A few pliles down the coast, some folks in Newport Beach act like \hey~vc already seen Evnn- gelho's horror Cilm-to·be. They're scared out of their wits that a pro- posed hostel across the street from City Hall will bring score~ of rowdy young travelers and va· grants who party until all hours an~ cheapen the city's image as a sparkling tourist destination. Succumbing to these fears, as well as to a concern abou t lack of parking, the Newport Beach Plan- ning Commission earlier this month rejected the proposal for the 50-bed International Back- packer's Inn at 430 32nd St. The City Council will reveiw the hostel proposal Monday night. · Opponents worry about the hos- tel becoming a magnet for unruly "surf punks" and inland (gasp) teens. Yet in the next breath, they fret that three parking spaces at the site won't be enough because, in the words of one resident, the · hostel guests could easily rent a car "with their parents' credit cards." If hostel guests are supposed to be of the undisciplined, runaway sort (as locals believe), would they really use credit cards? For a plush rental car? Besides, the parking s~e complaint is just plain silly. Having frequented hostels my- self while in college, I know hostel patrons seldom rent cars, primaril)'. because it goes against the spirit of traveling on the cheap. Hostel patrons are usually college stu- (Jents and adventurous travelers who thrive on the challenge of using public transit and other thrifty modes of transportation. This is true even in Southern California, land of the automobile. 1 have known young foreign travel- ers who have preferred to bicycle · o{ even walk 10 ,miles rather than call a taxi or rent a car. At the Colonial Inn ono recent week, only two or the 30 guests had cars. And if they rent a car, Colonial inn patrons typically do so. for onfS' a day at a time, for an outing to Los Angeles or other farther sites, according to manaaer Brcgita Marshall. Despite ahe absurdity of New- port's preoccupation with parking, the investors behind International Backpacker's arc working diU· acntly to find additional car spac- es. SUMMER'S HERE! Body surfers at The Wedge hold homage to the official arrival of the new season 'Yaahoo!" Spurred by big waves, a hot sun and a few bottles of cheap champagne, the intoxicating scream was heard at least once every five minutes Tuesday at The Wedge, where two dozen bodyslft'fers gathered for their annual "Salute to the Summer Solstice" party. They were stoked for s~mmer's arrival. "Wt;'vc been doing this for years," said Mel' Thoman, the unofficial organizer of the event. "We also bust out the champagne for the vernal equinox (first day of sprina). And the autumnal equinox. And winter solstice, too." The Wedge, the renowned strip or beach nt the tip of the Balboa Peninsula, is a bodysµrfer's dream. When the swell rolls in, it bounces off the harbor jetty and propels toward the beach, creating waves in excess of 15 feet. Several years ago, Thoman and friends created "The Wedge Preservation Society." T,he group encourages bodysurfing in the area and works diligently to keep the beach beautiful, orchestrating several clenn·up gigs throughout the year. He already has bif plans to produce his first nick -"Hor· ror at the Hostel," a fun little nail- biter set in a youth hostel. Editor's Notebook "I want to have it ready for the Sundance Film Festival (in Idaho)," sais -Evangclho, a cleancut, charm· ing, articulate gradµate of New York University's film school. And to gather fodder for his suspense thriller, Evangelho has been staying at the Colonial Inn Youth Hostel in Huntington Beach. He hopes to.return - after his concepts gel -to, set the film at the hostel on 8th Street near Downtown Huntington. Dut the Colonial Inn itself isR't a horrific site, according to Evan- gelho and other guests who sat on the porch one sunny afternoon, enjoying the weather, a cigarette or two and each other's company. In fact, the warm, family atmos- phere and the camaraderie of the international clicntele have made Eva!'gelho a return customer. He stays at the Colonial Inn whenever he's in the area. "h's got the best reputation," •said Evangelho. "And it beats staying in a hotel by yourself." A few miles down the coast, some folks in Newport Be ach act like they've alrendy seen Evan- gelho's horror film-to-be. They're scared out of their· wits that a pro- posed hostel across the street from City Hall will ~ring scores of • rowdy young travelers and va- grants who party unt il all hours • and cheapen the city's image as a sparkli ng tourist des tination. Succumbing to these fears, as well as to a concern about la ck of parking, the Newport Beach Plan· ning Com'mission earlier this month rejected the proposal for the 50-bed International Back· packer's Inn at 430 32nd St. The City Council will reveiw the hostel proposal Monday night. Opponents worry about the hos- tel becoming a magnet for unruly .. surf punks" and inland (gasp) teens. Yet in the next breath, they fret that three parking spaces at the site won't be enough because, in the words of one resident, the hostel guests could easily rent D car "with their parents' credit cards." If hostel gue.sts arc supp6sed to be of the undisciplined, runaway sort (as locals believe), would they really use crbdit cards? For a plush rental car? Besides, the parking space complaint is just plain silly. Havi ng frequented hostels my· self while in college, I know hostel patrons seldom rent cars, primarily because it goes against the spirit of traveling on the cheap. Hostel patrons arc usually college stu- dents and adventurous travelers who thrive on the challenge of using public transit and other thrifty· modes of transportation. This is true even in Sovthern California, land of the automobile. 1 have known young foreign travel- ert who have preferred to bic)'c1e O( even walk 10 miles rather than call a taxi or rent a car. At the Colonial Inn one recent week, only two of the 30 guests had can. And if they rent a car, Colonial Inn patrons typically do so for only a day at a time, for an outing to Los Angeles or othCT farther sites, according to l}lanager Brcgita Marshall. Despite the absurdity of New· port's preoccupation with parking, the investors behind International Backpacker's arc working dili· aently to find additional car spac· es. Andrew Grace and Philip Bos· ton will also hold a community meeting tonight, beginning at 7:30, In the City Hall council chamben to thorouahly explain their project to residents ... ' It was the attack of the beach balls as Estancia High School seniors hovered on the edge of anarchy during their graduation ceremonies. Seniors marched solemnly across the Le Bard Stadiun\ gridiron, rilling rows o( me tal folding chairs as parents and friends cheered and tooted air horns. After student Pciscilla Saez received her diploma, she did handsprings down 1he grassy aisle between the folding chairs. After the last name was ca lled, out came the beach ball from nowhere as students showered one another with a blizzard of confetli and yards of Silly String. "I'm Herc Mom!" read a hand-evade sign held aloft by a senior during the melee. Senior Jesse Economakos played a Jimi Hendrix version of the national anthem on his cherry-red electric guitar, flipping the peace sign to the audience on conclusion. And ASB President Vallejo told students, "Our life is like a book and we have infinite chapters to discover," as soap bubbles floated over the heads of the class of 1994. Beach balls continued to appear .11nd seniors did a giant wave after one of the balls was spiked. BY RlCHARD D~N, SroaTS Warru. S-imilar to tr:ick sprinters using small parachutes in training to gain more speed, scullers from the Newport Aquatic Center have been experiencing upique disciplines in tht local channels to help them go faster, while preparing for the U.S. N:jtional Rowing Championships this week at E::igle Creek Reservoir near ·Indianapolis. Montgomery Norton and Dlake Robert- son, both of whom are only a year into their sculling careers, \have already blazed n troil in the water, ~having woll state championships in quadruple~ and doubles last month in Sacramento. But Norton and Robertson, along with quad partners Michael de Figueiredo and James McNamar:i (both of University High), are feeling the need for more speed. r •:A few days ago out in the channel, we tied small, sand castle buckets behind the boats to add more resistance to the boat," said Robertson, who recently completed his junior year at Corona del Mar High. "We didn't even know we were doing it until that day," said Norton, who was graduated from Nc,~port Harbor on Tues- day, and will compete in crew for the Uni- vcrsiiy of Washington next season. "Coach (Todd McAtccr) told us out in the water. It was really weird." Norton and Robertson won the Califor- nia title in doubles with a time of 7 min- utes, 39 seconds, qualifying for the U.S. Olympic f estival in St. Louis next month, as well as the U.S. National Rowing Championships that begin on Thursday. In addition to the men's qua~ and men's doubles boats, the Newport Aquatic Center will also be represented at this week's nationals by two women's boats, including Sally Martindale and Michel Cogan, both Newport Harbor. graduates on Tuesday, in women's pairs. Martindale is headed for Georgetown, Cogan to the University of Pennsylvania. Blake Robertson (left), Montgomery Norton pull through en route to national championships· near Indianapolis. Robertson and Nor- ton, who also won the state championship in quads with McNamara and de Figueiredo, should be among the top doubles scullers at the nationals, where prepa- ration, according to McAtcer, is most innu- cntial. ,. enjoy the 'camaraderie on the team and being with my friends," he said. "I had not known (Norton) prior to this year, but we've become good friends; everybody has on the team. We're all like brothers, and that's how we like to be known. We kind of help each other out, and it pulls you through at rough times. . "I'd say they're the fa. vorites by winning state," McAtecr said. "By tying buckets onto the boats, it helps increase the rat- ing, which is strokes per minute, and when you take them off, the boat really flies. Hopefully, they'll go faster than be- fore. It makes things more interesting. Blake Robertson (left), Montgomery Norton have made a name for themselves already with state laurels at Sacramento last month. "Hopcf ully, we'll be hitting a peak when we go to the nationals and the Olympic Festival. One or my goals is to make the national team, and maybe even row with my partner in dou- bles." "Also, we're trying to get them ready for the heat (in lndiannpolis), because they're having record heat there. It's been like 100 degrees with 90% humidity, and I'm making them work out with extra clothing, so it's not as much of a shock when they get there." Robertson and Norton, who leave early this morning for Indianapolis, will stay on the road following the nationals, heading straight for St. Louis to train for a week before the Olympic festival. For Norton, who discovered sculling after recovering from a shoulder injury in water polo, his sudden success in the sculls i~ still sort of noating in the water. "I haven't really thought about it too much, yet," Norton said. "I'm taking each day at a time, because everything's hap- pening so quick. It really hasn't sunk in. After graduation (Tuesday), we're having a grad night party at school until about 4 a.m., then we're flying out of LAX early (this morning)." Robertson: originally from Tennessee. believes the crew members arc like broth· ers. "I like rhe physical aspect of rowing, I One thing they'll be thankful for this week: There will be no buckets attached to the b:ick of their boat's. "By using buckt!ts, the power in the -stroke is about one-third of the distance of the run on the boat," Norton said. "With the buckets there, it cuts (the drift) down to about nothing. The boat stops about a third of the di!otance of the run, and it makes it twice as hard. It gives you a sensation of where you should bring the power of the boat.
