The first one went to the Olympic Games multiple-gold medalist Greg Louganis. c. He had the dream early, and he made the most of , his talents, work ethics .., Few in the world of sports have dominated the competition as did diver-deluxe Sammy Lee. BY RlCKAJU> DUNN. Sroa-rs Wimn A merica was floundering "~ economically in a depression. Eddie Tolan and Ralph Metcalfe were preceding Jesse Owens as the world's fas\est sprinter. Jack Sharkey won the heavyweight boxing title from Max Schmeling. Lou Gehrig was in his prime. It was also a time when a wide-eyed 12-ye::ir-old Kore:in from Highland Park, who would l::iter m::ike Olympic history and become one of the nation's most beloved ambassadors, first realized what all the Olympic fuss was about when Los Angeles hosted the 1932 Games. "I saw all the flags (along the streets) in 1932, and I O!iked my dad what they were doing there," Or. Sammy Lee recalled. "My dad said because (Los Angeles) is 'I couldn 't have done it if it wasn't for the army ... in ~ t~e military, there ~ are others to cover and you 're always on salary.• having the Olympic .Games for all the greatest athletes in the world. "Then 1 realized 1 could do some things my colleagues couldn't do." -SAMMY lff Lee kept more than a Two-time gold medalist promise. He discovered he could do backward and forward somersaults belier than any of his playmates. A friend suggested that Lee try 1 Vi somersaults. "I was so thrilled, I ran home and told my dad I'd found it," Lee said. Sixteen years later, Lee became the world's greatest diver, winning his first of two gold medals. Lee went to f ran kl in High in Highland Park, where in 1939 he was the first non-white student body president. He was a classmate with two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rodger Ward (1959 and 1962), "Star Trek" author Gene Roddenberry and tennis great Bobby Riggs. • Lee was five years ahead of Paul Sal ata, Irrelevan t Weck founder and fellow Balboa Day Club Hall of Fame mem ber . Sroan Wann I n an age of innocence, when the crowning Olympic &Jory was a gold medal rather than million-dollar endorsements, Dr. Sammy Lee was the best diver in the world. Years later, Lee, a former army doctor, would coach three Olympians, including five-tinJF Olympian and two-time gold medalist Greg Louganis. Lee, h°"·ever, known as a vociferous and hard-nosed coach who never accepted a dime for his services, is strongly opinionmeJ about today's athletes who live in a fast-paced society and often seek instant gratification. "I think we've gone for the green rather than the gold," said Lee, who dominated the field at the 1948 and '52 Olympiads, winning gold medab in the 10-meter platform, and a silver medal in the 3-mctcr springboard in the 1948 London Games. Lee, retired in Huntington Harbour, turns 74 on Aug. I. He was the first American-born Asian lo win on Olympic medal, the first non-white to win an Olyqipic diving medal and the first dive r to win back-to-back gold medals in the IO-meter platform. Lee, a former army doctor w~ ha s devoted several years of service on the Presidents Council on Ph)sical Fitness and Sports, which was started under President Dwight D.
