Areas only pro sports team will not return to John Wayne Tennis Club. C ecil Spearman, owner of the John Wayne Tennis , Club in Newport Beach, confirmed Tuesday that the Newport Beach Dukes of World TeamTennis will not return next year to the club, ending a ; .. five-year relationship with the tennis club. Spearman cited the fact that club members are generally unhappy with their inability to enjoy social tennis around center court in the month of July, during the WiT season, because of bleachers si;t up for the Dukes' matches. The announcement fu rther adds to the uncertainty of the Dukes' fut ure; team owner Fred Lieberman has been actively shopping the team to potential new owners. It is unlikely the team will be able to find another si te in the Newport-Costa Mesa area to call ho:ne . The Dukes have had a suc.cessful run in Newport ~each, reac!'ling the pl ayoffs the past three years, only to fall short of the ritle. They reached the championship match in both 1992 and 1993 and the 1994 Dukes became the first WTT team to go through the regul ar season undefeated, winning all 14 of th~ir matches before los1ng to Boise in the league semifinals last we1:kcnd.
