Aside from the debilitating affects of politics, taxes and the "pursuit of happiness," scientists delving into the mysteries of aging Nancy Mcintyre 59 and Holding report astonishing revelations. Through genetic manipulation, they've been nble to double the life span of fruil flies, giving them' the cquivale~of a human span of 150 years. I don't know what fruit flies arc going to do with all this time. Ma)be they'll broaden-their c:ireers and tal-e up • 'egctables as well. The most significant aspect of longevity research is lire discovery of one of the natural "Methuselah" genes, whose technical name is superoxi<le ui!.mutase or SOD. Uy inserting e\tr:i copies of the SOD gene into fruit tly embryos, their longevity dramatically increnses .. l lopefully, one day our own "l\Ic1husclah" gene will be avail:Jble in gelcaps to banish \\ rinklcs, memory loss, impotency, hemorrhoids, balding aod repealing-the-same-jokes. One of the comporyents.lhat enhances aging is free radicals - not the kind in earrings and tattoos -but highly reactive molecules that form naturally in the body from food. Consequently, rc:mictivc caloric intake (a fancy hanule for dieting) is also a significant factor in the longevity pualc. Certainly ·this encouraging report gives us hope we may all live long enough for Congress to pass a compr<?mise health plan lollcry where winning tickets are gootl for a free office ·vbit. faitlence is piling up that another vital factor in slowing down tire biulogical clock is ''delaying reproduction to a later age." But slowly and surely, time is running out fo r the residents of that idyllic place. In the 1920s, friends of the Irvine fornily were invited to build beach cottages near the sandy shore of a beach between th e small towns of Laguna Beach and Corona det-Mar. It was named Crystal Cove, and became n sm:ill community of simple cottages, accessible to the outside world only down a rutted dirt road. But the state of California bought the land the cottages sit on from the-Irvine Co. in 1979 fo r a state park, a(ld the residents have fought a spirited, but losing, battle to keep their homes. In 1993, residents went o n mon1h-to-mon1h· teases, the entry ga te was removed and plans.went ahead to refurb ish some of the cottages and off er them as weekly rentals. Things v.ere better back in 5754. I lowever, in an effort 10 reverse th~ down slide, J'm making these belated resolutiom: •Never again (unles~ being sued for somcthipg) will l make an appeal'ancc in small claims' eoun. Win or lose, the experience is jusr too harrowing. Local Scene As my s:iinted sire used to say about such pelly disputes, "Pay the two dollars." Or, in this case, forget the two dollars -it simply ain't worth it. Or, as a senior member of my board of advisers puts it, "Don'.t you have ,. more import:mt things to thin k about?" • • I laving Joi.t my oldes1 brother on th e lirst day of Rosh I la-.hanah, I hereby resol\.e to spend more time communicating '"ith remaining members of the family, even if the kinfolk call from the E::i~t Coast and reverse the charges. · •I'm utlvising Comca~t Cablevision that I 'ye had a belly full of their alleged comedy shows. This 'icwer h hardly a prude, bu1 it isn't even safe to channel-surf an}rnorc. I haven't heortl sewage like that since the North Koreans \\ere lobbing mortar shells, thereby disrupting our poker games. •You'll never again see me in formal attire, except possif>ly for laying•out purposes. And that tux I can rent. . \.- • No more wagering on Rams games. They squeaked past their opener, 14-12,just to spite this continuing unbeliever. The first place to look is at the level of the transmission fluid to be sure that it is correct. Next, a look at the transmission filter (or screen) may be in order to verify that it is not partially clog~ed. If sediment is evid· ent, rt could lower the hydrau· lie pressure within the trans- m is.sion to cause sJippirig. Whtie replacing the filter and adding new ftold-can restore normal transmission opera- tion, failure later o.n down the road could occur. Soft sludge in the transmission filter is indicative of significant wear on the friction material on the transmission bands and clutches. HINT: Large flakes (aside from soft sludge) in the transmission filter usually indicate the need for a transmission overhaul. HIGH BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT If it requires greater than normal force upon the brake pedal to stop a car, the pro· blem may rest with the brake pads or shoes. If the added exertion duri4lg braking only occurs after the car is force- fully and repeatedly braked, the symptom may be due to brake overheating ·and fading (a loss of braking efficiency · due to excessive heat). The brakes or pads shourd be checked and reRlaced as needed. If discs or drums develop blue-spotting due to overheating, their replace- ment is also required. In the event that excessive force is always required to brake the car. the power brake boo.star may have failed or a vacuum hose IQading to it may have broken. If a vacuum hose is at fault, the engine will also run roughly. · Replacing youi: brake pads frequently and checking your rotors and drums for wear can extend the life of your brakes.
