crossing their fingers in hopes
that certified election ~esuhs

Newport officials said they
are hoping to get an 11th-hour
call -at about 2:45 p.m. today
-from the county Registrar of
Voters, with final, certified
•tallies.
City Manager Kevin Murphy
said Friday city officials
informed the Registrar of
today's induction plans and
county starr promised to do
their best to get tbe numbers tQ
them in time.
If the city fails to get
certified results by 3, the
induction ceremony will simply
be adjourned to a later date,
but a receptio n for outgoing
council me mbers will still be
held today, Murphy said.
Council hopeful Ron Winship
on Friday criticized the city for
planning to proceed today,
saying officials should have long
ago postponed the inductio n
ceremonies until final results
were clear.
Winship at last count was 180
votes behind Thomas Edwards
for the District 4 seat -a
rolkr-coastcr, nail-biting race
since Ele.ction Day, when Win-
ship initially emerged the sur-
prise victor by a mere 26 votes.
With some 4,500 absentee
and provisional ballots still to
be calculated county-wide,
Winship·on Friday said the tide
could )till turn.
Mo rphy said he did not opt
to reschedule the ceremonies
today bec&luse the city has
alwilys conducted the
swearing-in on the 13th or 14th
day ilfter the election. And,
scheduling gets diffi cult as the
busy holiday season and
vacation time come in to play,
he noted.

offshoot groups that have grown
out of the well-known advocacy
organization, a commonly used
"Laughingly, we say, 'Look
what SPON has spawned,' " said
Nancy Skinner, a SPON member
since 1985 and a former pub-
lisher of the SPON newsletter.

CYPRESS -The Newport Harbor High
girls volleyball team. ranked No. 1 in the
nation and heralded more than any team·
since, well, the two~time defending national
champions from Corona de! Mar High,
backed up all that hype Saturday night.
Coach Dan Glenn1s Sailors, behind
two-time All-American senior Mii.ty May,
dismantled the six th-ranked team in the
nation, Mira Costa High of Manhattan
Beach, 15-5, 15-1, 15-7, to win the ClF
Southern Section DWis.io11 1 championship
at Cypress College.
The un expectedly lopsided affair, wh ich
lasted only 61 minutes, upped the Sailors'
record to 29-1 heading into the state
playoffs beginning Tuesday. It was the fir)t
section crown since 1987 and third overall
for Newport, which lost section and state
title matches last season to Dack Bay rival
CdM.
''This was the best match we've played
all year," said Glenn, whose team allo\\ed
the fewest points ever in a best-of-five CIF
Southern Section final, spanning 81
mat ches in all divisions since shifting from
the best-of-three format in 1981.

Newport Harbor boat parade
Family fightjng through tragedies
Unravel those Christmas lights and string 'em along the
yacht -official applications to participate in the ~th
A nnual Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade arc now
available through the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of
Commerce.
Registered participants must take part in four of the
parades slated for Dec. 17-23 and a rc eligible for a variety of
awards that will be presented at a Jan. 20 dinner at the Le
Meridien Hotel.
Entry fee is $50 and any vessel, from a 12-foot kayak to
a million-dollar yacht, is welcome to join the harbor tour
that attracts more than a million viewers, according to
organizers.

The recent recipient of the SRirit of
Volu111cerism Golden Ruic Award for
Cumula1ive Service -an honor he wns

"ll was the biggest surprise of my
life," said the 80-year-old Cos1a Mesa
resident. "I've gone lo those lunches
before and heard all those people that
ure really deserving."
A TRUE FRIEND
A retired real estate appraiser for
l3ank of America, Minder works 30 to 50
hours a month with a local service
organization known as FISH (Friends in
Service for Humanity).
According to the group's executive
direc1or Debbie O'Connor, "Howard is
the epitome of what the best volunteer
could be. He is very unassuming; he
does ii our of the goodness of his heart
because he loves people."
A 47-year residenl of Costa Mesa,
Minder has worked with FISH for the
past 17 years. FISH is a nonprofit
organizution thal provides preve ntative
and shor1-term assislance 10 !hose in
need who live in Cosia Mesa, Newport
13each and Irvine. Many of the clients
are elderly J>hul·ins or families at risk of
becoming homeless.
Minder got involved wilh FISH when
a retirement counselor al Bank of
America suggesled lhe organizalion as a
good place to spend his free time.
"I like 1he people al FISH and l think
tlicy arc doing a great job,~' Minder said.
"They need all the help they can get."
A GOLDEN HEART
Minder has worked in aU areas of the
organization over the years.
''He helps pack food, puts food away,
drives people to doctors' appointments,
takes the trash out. You name it he'll do
ii," suid O'Connor.
O'Connor remembered a time when
Minder donated the use of his yard for
FISH's rummage sale. Another time he
gave his oTd bicycle to a single mother
with three children. He and his wife
Ocbc help pul together holiday meals
ove r Thanksgiving and Christmas.
A few years ago, Minder decided to
make something out of FISH's backyard,
which at the time was overgrown with
weeds and brush. Minder cleared it all
· .away and planted everything from
tomatoes and zucchini to snap peas in
order to provide FISH clients with fresh
produce.
But probably his favorite job at FISH
is delivering "Mobile Meals" to those
who can't shop or cook ..
."Mobile Me.als brightens up their life
a liule bit. I feel a lot of satisfaction to
be able to do this for them," Minder
said.
O'Connor said Minder is one of few
volunteers always ready and willing to
run any of FlSH's six Mobile Meals
routes.
"Most of (the shut-ins} are close to
his age and 1 think that he really has
empathy for them. He realizes that he is
the only one to go in and brighlen their
day," O'Connor said.
"He tells them little jokes ... he's
really jusl a sweetheart. He thinks of all
of them as really special."
OTHER FISH TO FRY
FJSH isn't Minder's only volunteer
endeavor. He· also donates his time to
ReLeaf Costa Mesa and to cleaning up
Costa Mesa city parks and the Newport
Bay.
These three programs all involve
taking care of the outdoors, one of
Minder's favorite haunts. ln fact, he and
Bebe often take off for fishing trips to
spots such as Big Bear and locaJ state
parks in their travel trailer.
Minder also likes to garden and pl ay
golf and one of his greatest passions is
his lrains. His meticulously cared for

spending time with their 1hree grown
children, who all Jive in the area.
Dut volunteerism remains one of the
most important facets of hig.-life.
"You should give back something to
the community you Jive in, instead of
always taking," he said. "(The things I
do) help Costa Mesa and help the
environment."

Ancient food processing tools, Oat basin-shaped
grinding stones, hunting blades and dart points have
been excavated, showing !hat the first native
Americans lived in this area in periods from 1200
D.C. to 500 A.O. Designated Aura 58, the second
largest Native American artifact si te in the slate is
located roughly in the area between Mesa Verde
and Estancia High School.
A repr~sentation of the Shonshone village that thrived along the Orange Coast.
They were members of the ancient Shoshoni
linguistic group and were kin to the Comanches, the
Hopi and the Aztecs in Mexico, and they roved the
California coast from Malibu to Aliso Creek.
Their lives were devoted to food gathering, and
because of the ocean's bounty and plentiful seeds,
cactus fruits, wild grapes· and acorns, they lingered
here, leaving village household remains and

plundered by uncaring souvenir seekers, and
bulldozed by development.
When the Spanish Fathers founded their Mission
in San Juan Capistrano in 1776, they wrote of an
Indian village called Luku p on the banks of the
Santa Ana River. Sometime between 1817 and 1823,
a small adobe hut with a tar and tule roof was built
near the site to shelter the herdsmen who traveled
with the free ranging mission cattle. By t~en, the
Lukup villagers had been forced 3.way from their
homes by the herds that competed with them fo r the

Gabrielenos by the Spanish, as they lived within the
jurisdiction of the San Gabriel Mission. What little
we do know comes to us only from what the
Franciscan missionaries wrote about them and the
objects we have uncovered, leaving behind a
poignant mystery of a gentle, agrarian society that
loved this land before we did.

the expansion of the John Wayne
Airport and twice blocked the
expansion of Newport Center by
collecting signatures 10 bring the
item to the ballot. The group has
fought for the inclusion of parks
and open space al every instance
of new development and have
been watchdogs over Newport
Bay.
But the winds have shifted, say
SPON members. Once the
expansion of Newport Center
addressed the land use and
circulation needs of the Newport
Beach General Plan, SPON had
no tangible reason to oppose it,
said SPON co-founder Jean Watt.
Hence the Planning Commission's
recent approval of the Fashion
Island expansion wi1hout a protest
from SPON members or anybody
else.

longtime SPON member, agrees
that the state of the economy
contributed to the Measure A
vote, but feels that the item should
have passed anyway. The majority
of Newport Beach residents, he
said, had enough financial stability
to collec1ively purchase the
C:l'staways land. ·
"This is not an impoverished
community," he said. "People
would rather spend their money
on a tllfp'> to the Carribean or a
new car. I love to travel myself but
(the Castaways land) would have
been some1hing that would have
been a wonderful legacy."

forcing a shth-man ruling to decide the qualifier in
the ClF Southern Section p ivisional championships
Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Coach Dill Sumner's Sea l(jngs advanced to the
ClF State Championships next Saturday at Wood-
ward Park in Fresno. The Tars will stay home.
"It would have to be us two (in a tie)," Sumner

CdM senior Drian Sling~by, continuing his hot
pace, finished second overall in 15 minutes, 25 sec-

before Reservoir (Poop Out) Hill and finished
strong.
''He got tied up in the crowd early on," Sumner
said. "He was su pposed to be in the top IO in the
first 300 ya rds, so he had to make up all that
ground in about l Vi miles. Dy then, he got the
slush out of the way, then he could race. He
looked like one of those ladies at a Wonder Bra
sale, pushing through everybody."
Sling!iby will get another shot at ClF Division Ill
individual champion Javier Ramirez of Nordhoff
(15:10) at the state meet.
Also in the Division 111 race, Estancia's Johann .
Appell (16:06) ran a personal best at Mt. SAC and
finished 13th overall, but did not qualify. "I was
just glad 1 could run," said Appell, who missed
about two month~ with a right leg injury.
In the girls Di' ision Ill fi n2's, CdM finished
third in 111-A and did not qualify for state. Out se-
nior sensation Tracy Clark, who ran a personal-
best 18: IO and "as fourt h overall, qualified as an
individual.
· _ CdM (67 points) finished behind champion Nor-
dhoff (38) .and Tcmescal Can)·on (58) in the 111-A
race, even though six of the Sea l(jngs' seven run-
ners had personal-best times.

Jetton, who recorded 13 saves, includinJ nine in
the second h:ilf (five in the fourth quarter). put a
stake through Foothill's heart with 2 minutes, l sec-
ond left in the game, when he stopped Brian Brown's
penalty shot.
"(Jetton) played very well," Vargas said. "Thad
Buzolich also took over on defense and com-
municated well, and Adrian Strclzow and Kevin
Tucker, they really came up :ind won the game for
us. They're the unsung heroes.
"Any time there was a call on the 21 (right) side,
they did a -good job of stopping it; as well as de-
fending the·counterattack and playing under control."
McFarland scored both his goals in the first quar-
ter, in the hole on a short pass from Palda and ~ur
ing a counterattack on a pass from Strelzow.
After Brown scored to tic it, 2-2, in the second
quarter, Palda scored on a pass Crom McFarland with
1: 12 remaining during a six-on-five advantage, as the
Sea l(jngs finally converted on a Foothill ejection. It
gave CdM a 3-2 edge, a lead it would never relin-
quish.
Palda scored again with 0:07 left in the first h:llf
during another man·up situation on 3 lob hot. Foot-
hill had five ejections m the fir!il half, with CdM scor-
ing on its final t~o opportunities.
DuzoJich scored early in the third quarter, then
Palda added another goal durinl a six-on-five with
3:S6 lcfl in the pme 10 give CdM a 6-2 lead.
The Sea Kings used no substitutions the entire 28

Riverside's Curtis Wilmore, who
blocked an OCC field-goal at-

blocked Kaiser's punt on the Pi-
rates' next possession. Wilmore
also recovered the loose ball at the
OCC 9-yard line an'd ran to pay-
dirt untouched.
"I can't believe we los t on a
blocked punt,'! said Workman,
whose squad also turned the ball
over three times (two Mall Sauk
interceptions and a lost fumbl e).
"It's just inexperience,'' Clayton
said. "But a Jot of times this year,
(opponents) outmuscled us. They
had a lot stronger guys."
Clayton, possibly headed for the
University of Texas next year, con-
tinued to credit OCC fullback Jus-
tin Harrison (45 yards on 10 car-
ries). "He gave me at least half of
my career yardage," Clayton said.
