Why is your right foot heavily bandaged? A. Because it must be protected Crom infection. Q . Can you sum up the problem in one word? . A. Yes. Blisters. Q . Caused by? A. The usual: Stamping out flames. A fire erupted in my office-cage and was threatening the entire mansion. Q . Wow l That was pretty heroic, wasn't it? A. No, actually it was pretty stupid. I wasn't wearing shoes at the time, just gym socks. Q. And when did you first become aware that your foot was burning? Didn't the pain give you a clue? A. No, one of the nicest things about diabetic neuropathy is that you're not aware of sensations like that. The big clue came when the sock began to blister and smolder. Q . Holy hot-foot! And then what happened? A. Well , before you could spell conflagration, my member-turning-ember was being doused. So was everything else in a flame-shooting corner of the cage, thanks to an unidentified, · passerby who grabbed the garden hose and made like the Super Scooper. If it hadn't been for his quick response, this house might have been reduced to fUbble. Q. And who was this good Samaritan? A. I haven't the foggiest notion. He vanished as fast as the flames. For whatever it's worth, though, the garden's statue of St. Jude -installed months ago by several devout members of our Mitzvah Bar and Grill -seems to be sporting a beatific smile these days. Q. Well, before you rush to convert, tell us what touched off this near-disaster? A. Good question. One moment I'm watching th.e Penn State-Michigan State football game on the tube, next moment, I'm watching flames leap around the adjoining room. Experts say it was "an electrical fire," probably ignited by a malfunctioning Former DCC dean Kenneth Mowrey dies Kenneth E. Since both the Economic Development Com- miuee (EDC) and Che Environ· mental Quality Affairs Committee (EQAC) meet on a monthly basis, the Ci ty Council will likely not sec the ordinance again before Janu- ary. The council could decide to adopt the remai ning sections of the ordinance and postpone ap- proval on the leaf blower/HVAC provisions, according to city Senior Planner Patrick Alford. However, residents counter, it is precisely these provisions which have been generating all of the controversy. "I don't even know what's in the rest of the ordinance," said Co· rona del Mar community leader Luvcna Hayton, who has repeat- edly lobbied th e council to ban gasoline-powered leaf blowers throughout the city. On Nov. 14, as one of its fast of- ficial acts before a new council was seated, the Ci ty Council ap- proved an ordinance prohibiting ga~-powered leaf blowers within 200 f cet of residential areas and requiring that HVAC units not ex- ceed an exterior noise level of 55 dba. · By the time the ordinance reached its second reading and adoption phase Monday, the coun- cil had three new members, each. of whom had heard complaints or questions about what the previous council had pa))Cd. Call Now for appointment ~ ~\.- Luehrs, who wrote a Jetter to City Manaaer Kevin Murphy, bu maantained that the busineu com· muoity can not afford the ~ powered leaf blower ban. The cost of using quieter cleaning devices will be borne by homeowners in aated communities and renters, ac· cording to Luehrs. To make matters worse, he said, the council did not even begin to discuss the provisions until after 10 p.m. at the Nov. 14 hearing. Leaf blower opponents claim the new council did a disservice to the residents by overturning the decision of its predecessors. If cit· ies such as Irvine, Laguna Beach, Beverly Hills and La Jolla could successfully pass noise control or- dinances, they claimed, why the delay in Newport Beach? "It seems highly irregular to in- terrupt the proceedings because of a letter from the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce," resident Lucille Kuehn told the council at Monday's meeting. "It doesn't seem to have taken these other cities as long (to pass the or- dinance) as it's taking you.'' Alford noted that many other cities had dealt with leaf blower and air conditioning provisions in- dependently. Taking into account the seating of the new council, the holidays and the comprehensive- ness of the ordinance, the lengthy duration is not unusual, he said. Yet residents who are weary of complaining about unwanted noise wondered when the end would come. "One council pe rson is talking about studying it for six months and another says, 'Do you think you can do it in 30 days?'" Hay- ton said. "It didn't sound very promising to me." 631-4781 ~ S68-68S1 pgr. ~ 2400W. Coast Hwy., Suite #4, Newport Beach ~ (PCH~een l•mboftt la Newport Blvd.,) Christmas Blend is Back!
