Elementary school . enrollments in the Newport Harbor High School area have been on an upward trend, with some filling past capacity. One of the fullest schools is Kaiser Primary, which accommodates kindergarten through second grade classes. Kaiser is at J 12% capacity. Students aren't necessarily squeezed out of seats when schools arc that f ul~ but the heavy capacity forces the schools to use computer labs or science activity rooms as classrooms. The move to add portable classrooms is an idea thal will give the board time to discuss other long-term oplions, including: adding afternoon kindergarten sessions; changing school boundaries; ' Newport Harbor High into a seven through 121h grade or eighth to 12th grade school; and converting Ensign Middle School to an elementary school. Marina, which has averaged beating op- ponents in the first quarter this year, 20-7, was a far cry from Orangewood Academy, Estancia's opcning-roun(J competitor. Estancia, ,.,.hich hammered Orangewood Academy (69-8) in the first round and Saddlcback (65-32) in the semifinals in the tournament, had no such likeness in opposition in this one,..as Marilla crushed the Eagles, 13·0, after the opening buuer. Marina, four·time dcfending Sunset League champion, led 35-18 nt halftime, then ~purled again c:irly in the third quar· • .f ter, largely bccau e of its offensive re- bounding advantage. The Vikings' starting front line or 6- foot-2 (Kirsten Cappel), 6-foot (Shandy Robbins) and 5-10 (Sonya Bryant) con· trolled the glass, outrcbounding the Ea· gles, 37-21, with Cappel (nine), Bryant (eight) and Robbin> (~vcn) doillc the bulk or the inside work. ''All year, we've been able to get out on people," Bonny said. "We .took Estancia out or its of- fense. I heard (Davis) yelling at them to get in the offense, but I think it was our defcn.se that pre- ve nted them from gelling into the offense." Estancia, led offensively by Cyndi Richards and Mcghan No- land, both with 10 points, pulled to within 22-16 in the second quar- ter. The Eagles, however, sparke-d by Richards and Noland, made a · mild run to pull within 42-29, but the Vikings continu ed their assault in the fourth.
