EST NEWPORT -Resi- ts in · this area, where police a serial rapist may be prowl- aren 't panicked by that pos- ity, but they are taking· plenty r f recauti.ons. A robbery and rape at gunpoint on 3Sth Street; an attempted rape on Colton Stree;t and another rape at gunpoint in Costa Mesa - all between Nov. 29 and Dec. 16 -have police urgin' residents to lock doors and windows. All three assaults were committed by a man who entered homes through un- locked doors or windows in the early morning hours, police said. Near 38th Street Park, residents said they had already been pretty saf cty-con5cious. "I won't say that I'm frightened with my three goldc;n retrievers around,'' saisf Katie Richardson, who-advised several of her neigh- bors to be cautious after she read newspaper accounts of the as- saults. "I think we're just being more aware," Richardson said, "taking more precautions.'' Across the street, Nancy Baker's fittt line of defense is her dog Btlbba, who greets all comers by yelping and pouncing up against a picket fence. The knee-high poo- dle and cocker spaniel mix even kept the postal carrier at arm's· length Crom the fence as. she hand- ed the mail to Baker. , "You can see 1 have my little guard dog here," Baker said, add- ing philosophically, "If it's my time, it's my time.'' Not that she's making it easy for potential assailants. Wooden sticks reinforce locks on her sliding win- dows, doors are locked and when Bubba goes for a walk, Baker keeps tear gas at the ready. On the sa me block, Ken Kuhl- mann said his wife took self- • defense a bit fu rther while she was home alone one night last week. "Instead of having the gun in the closet, it was on the dresser," Kuhlmann said. Randy Garell, manager of The Grant Boys, on Newport Boule- vard in Costa Mesa, said he's heard some talk about the recent assaults, buC that sales of guns, pepper spray and other non-lethal weapons are on the rise anyway. "Women ate tired of being tar- gets and are not interested in being vulnerable," Garell said, as he stood behind a glass-enclosed display· of handguns. "This used to be a business that was 80% to 85% ~ale-dominated. You never saw women at the gun counter. Now it's going the other way." On Tuesday, Newport Beach Police spokesman Sgt. Andy Gonis said inve!>tigators had no new in- formation to report regarding the two rape cases and the a.ttempted sexual assault. • But, he confirmed that poliCe See NllGMaORHOOD/P•1• I customers pleased . as cargo servic·e begins at airport - ~ Companies say addition of UPS flights at John Wayne has helped them provide better service to customers. As he predicted, Michael Cohen, director. of pharmacy for Costa Mesa's Homedco, says that cargo O!ghts out of John Wayne Airport are allowing his clients to· "breathe easier." The extra half hour of pickup time provided by the new cargo flights means medication for breathing machines can get to pa- tients a day and a half earlier than previously. On Dec. 6, county supervisors approved changes to the airport's' access plan, cleariryg the way for limited cargo service out of John Wayne ~irport.
