We arc into the third week of flood right now, srn nding in puddles and wondering if ''e'll ever sec drought again. Orange County has had lOO-ycar storms, 500-ycar storms, 40-ycar storms, 30-year storms -every one seems to have a year a11:iched to it. (Who knows for i.ure about a 500-year storm?) They arc all the result of a unique set of circumstances that bring us a series of heavy r:iin. Sometimes it is called· the Pineapple Connection, a situation where the cold northern jct stream dips unusually fa r south carrying rain from a low pressure system. ll is augmented by moisture from the subtropical jet stream that usually hangs around Hawaii (hence the Pineapple), which mixes warm, moist southern air with the cold northern air, the warm air condenses and that's a lot of rain. Three things can happen -the northern jct stream can move back north and rain on Seattle, the subtropical jet stream can water some pineapples, or we can buy a giant umbrella for California and wait it out. In past years, the jet Mrcam has moved away after several storms have swept the st:ite. In 1969, cleaning up after a SIOO million series of rainstorms, a weary observer remarked, "We're in trouble if someone even spits." · Th~ storm series also struck in 1907, 1916, 1927, 1938, 1969, 1979, 1983, and 1987. In addition, individual grants will be presented to each middle school and high school art dep~rtment. . . Audio-visual materials also will be given to the district's art library. The Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation also gave 60 local teachers educational grants for their schools and students in November. All the money will go tow:mJ academic projects such as textbooks, science experiment materia1s, a rt supplies and drama equipment. Firefighters tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the pet, which hud been overcome by smoke inhalation. The residents of 1672, who were :iwak.ened by the sound of breaking glass, attempted to put out the fire but were forced ·from the house by the intense heat. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the ground floor bedroom window of unit 1672 and e~tending to the second floor window of unit 1674. The fire was contained in about 15 minutes. Most of the ground floor apartment suffered smoke damage and about half of it was damaged by the fire. Damage to the second floor apartment was contained to only a small portion of the bedroom. Auto .. facfs by Paul Frech SERVPCE A REPAIR GERftlAN SWEDISH JAPANESE AUTOMOBILES INSiDE INFORMATION A car's coolant hoses may give little outward indication that they may fail. This is due to the ·fact that they fail more often from the inside because of efec· troch.emical degradation. This problem ·arises as metals of the cooling system and the hose material. in combination with the coolant, form an electrical cell that produces a low DC vof· tage (particularly at high coolant temperatures). Over time, this etectrical flow can cause cracks within the hose that start at the ends and run the entire length of the hose. Those who wait to see the damage may only be rewarded with a leak or burst hose. By feeling for irregularities in the hose, the auto technician can detect problems and replace hoses as a preventive measure. This unnerving noise or grinding sound will probably be aocom· panied by a loss In braking· pow- er. Either sound signals the need for immediate replace- ment of the shoes {drum brakes) or pads (disc brakes). In addition, the drum or rotor will probably need either to be machine-smoothed or replaced. In some cases, a high-pitched squeal signals more of a warn· Ing than a near crisis. Thjs is because many manufacturers outfit their brake pads with metal tabs that emit a high- pitched squeal when the pads need replacing. Either way, driv- ers should listen for, and be responsive to, braking squeals. If you have your brakes checked when you first hear them squeal. you may save yourseH from having to r~ce your rotors Immediately.
