rocked by a feeling of deja vu.

21, 1946, the day the first major
earthquake hit that region
"I was 18 during the
occupation after the \\ar, billeted
in Kobe," recalled I larncy, 66,
now lhe prc!>ident of St. Vincent
de Paul , a non-profit agency that
helps the needy in Orange
County.
"About JO of us were on the
fifth noor of the old Chamber of
Commerce in the city, located
next to a bay. The quake hit
about 4:23 a.m., and rolled on for
about three and a half m inute~."

For Trejo, 55, and Araujo1 34, showing
up for work every morning is always a
little bit like coming home. Together the
women; who li\'C in Garden Grove, have
brought a warm family atmosphere to the
c:ifeteria that the faculty and students
have grown to love.
Their workday begins at 6:30 a.m., with
Araujo continuing a generation:il tradition
by making her way across the ne\\ly
remodeled kitchen :ind giving her mother
a kills.
"ll's i.omething she'i. :ilwa}S done, and 1
love it," said Trejo. "We 're very
lovey·dovey here."
"l ju~t do th:it because I love ~ceiAg my
mother," explained Araujo. "We don't
work con~tantly together, and I ju~t look
forward to i.eeing her every morning."
Cooking meal!> for large numbers of
people comes naturally to Trejo. She is
the mot her of eight children, grandmother
of 26 ("with one in the oven!" she
laughs), and great·grandmother of three.

Members of the conservative Lin-
coln Club of Orange County -a
faction of inOuential local Re·
publicans -have submiu~d a plan
of action designed to help the county
deal with its Chapter 9 Mnkruptcy.
The club's task force, which has·
met several times since the county
filed for bankruptcy Dec. 11, pre·
sented its plan Tuesday. The club
li:ls sent the one·page list of sug-
gestions to each member of the
county Board of Supervisors, said
Lincoln Oub president Doy Henley.
''I'm used to cooking for a lot of
people," she said. "I re:illy don't like 10

Trejo began working :it Golden West
College in Huntington DeacJl in 1982 as a
food i.ervice worker and transferred to
OCC two years later. She has been in her
current po!>ition of head cook for three
years.
Her daughter abo !>larted ~•t Golden
West as a !>andwich worker, and when
OCC finished remodeling its enormous
Student Center in 1993 and advertised for
new cafeteria workers, Araujo jumped at
the chance to work ne<ir her mothe('.
TrcJO's family recipes for traditional
Mexican dishes ha~ proven a
gai.tronomical blessing for the students of . .
OCC. She has introduced to the daily
menu such delicious fare as tamales,
chicken enchiladas and chili rellcnos, and
changed the cafeteria'i. practice of u!iing
canned refried beans in th eir recipes -
now all the refried beans are home-made.
"My mother's used to cooking in
quantity," Araujo said. "Maybe someday l
migh t introduce some of my own recipes."

she was given the "Friend of the
Students" award :it OCC's annu:il Honors
Night. According lo B:irbara Newbern,
OCC's student activities coordinator, the
award is given only to people who "go
above and beyond 1he scope of their
responsibilities."
"l had no ide~ l was getting that
award,"· recalled Trejo. "l was just
working at Honors Night when my boss
called me over 10 the podium and
suddenly I fealized th:it they were t:ilking
:ibout me. That award was such an honor
to me."
Trejo has also attracted a group of fans
in her short time of working at OCC.
While the Student Center wai. being
remodeled two years ago, Trejo worke<l in
the school's Children's Cemer, preparing
lunches for the kids. ·n1e children there
grew so close to her that !>evcral limes a
week they come into the cafeteria and
sing her songs.
"They come rn and sing to me little
children's songs," she said with a smile.
"Then thc)i give me their bugs and ki~~es
and l give the m each· a cookie."

that his office would be willing to
provide the same guarantee that

guarantee.

team can no longer count its
goals this season on one hand,
af1er Tuesday's 1-0 Sunset
League victory over Fountain
Valley at the Harper Community Center.
"That was our sixth goal of the year," New-
port Coach Bryan Wildman said uf junior Sara
Lindsay's bounding shot nearly ·10 minutes into
the fint 30-minute half.
Lindsay's blast, from about 25 yards straight
out, headed directly toward charging Baron
goalkeeper Erica Crandall, who tried to boot ic
wide, bu~ missed. Crandall then watched help-
lessly as the ball carried just enough steam to
roll into the goal, about 10 yards behind her.
• 1t was the firth Newport goal against Foun-
tain Valley, which the Tars defeated, 4-1, in
the first round of league.
It also avenged a 1-0 tournament loss co the
Barons in Saturday's Orange County lnvita-·
tiomal nt Fountain Valley, one of four 1-0 de-
feats Satl!rday for the Sailors, who have lost
only one game by more than ope goal.
"We normally have more scoring chances
than the other team, buc we can't put them in
the net," said Wildman, who stans eight un-
derclassmen. "Our defense has been fairly
solid. IC we lose, i1's usually 1-0."
Newport's sophomore-laden defense was
hardly tested by the Barons, winless in league
play. A .ball did n.ot come close to Newport
sophomore goalie Jamie Foley all day and
sophomore sweeper Molli Mullen couchi:d the
ball only twice, pnce in the final 10 seconds.
Newport, which improved to 2-3-2 in league,
2-8-5 overall, including sub-regulation lime
tournamenc games, was keyed offensively by
Lindsay, senior co-captains Piper Archi~ald
and Kelly Diemer, Beth Schouk and hnks
(halfbacks) Jeannette Hecker and Lisa Swain.
Lindsay shares the team scoring lead with
Archibald (two each), according to Wildman,
who watched his Tars amass nine quality
shots, including one Diemer attempt that got
behind Crandall, only to be saved by another

CdM stumbles

of missed opportunities in
more ways th an one for the

basketball team Tuesday (!!Jllf-j~-~~
night. First, CdM was guilty ·~lill=ill' of a number of missed easy '
shots in its 55-50 Sea View League loss to
Irvine. And, the setback cost the Sea
Kings a chance to move into sole posses-
sion of third place in the league standings.
"We had a lot of missed opportunities,"
said a frustrated CdM he:ad coach Garth
Flint, whose team drops into a four-way
logjam at 1-3 in the Sea View. "We
missed some easy layups on fast breaks
which hurt us. We shot about 35% from
the field, and only about 50% from the
line."
Even with the shooting woes, CdM (8·
11 overall) wus in a po)ition to win ~he
game in the fourth quarter. The Sen Kings
rallied to take a 38-37 lead into the final
period.
