February 15, 1995 I British Petroleum ~ill pay nearly $4 million to restore wildlife habitats damaged or destroyed in the 1990 American Trader oil spill th3t coated the Newport Beach and Huntington Beach coastlines. The company will shell out $3.894 million, most of which will go to improve or protect bird and fish habitats affected by the spill, according to officials from the U.S. Attorney's office. But, officials from the federal agency S3id they couldn't say how much of that money will be used locally. Since some of the animals impacted by the spill may have moved elsewhere on the coast, the money may not all reach local shores, Assistant U.S. Attorney Dob Klotz said. "h 's not so much that the spill occurred at Port X so we have to spend the money at Port X," he said. "It's spent wherever it makes sense." BUREAU Fre• Pe9e 1 ferencc, meeting or retreat - compared to 80 le'ads during the same period last year. The bu- reau's goal was 126 leads for the entire fiscal yc:ir, which runs from July 1, 1994 to June 30, 1995. The figures for confirmed book- ings (groups which have signed contracts) are equally encouraging, Williams said. The bureau has booked 61 groups, compared to 32 during all of the 1993-94 fiscal year. This year's number already exceeds the bureau's total year goal of 50 bookings. The bureau's figures arc based on the number of hotel bookings and do not include bu siness gener- ated separately by area hotels and restaurants. Williams estimates that the re"enue from confirmed bookings totals $4.3 million over the past se,en months. With five months remaining in the fisca l year, the city can e>.pect a healthy boost to its coffers from tourist revenues, Williams said. Williams attributes the boom to aggressive bure:iu marketing and to :i general turnaround in the state and local economy. However, orgnniz:uions are following a con- servative trend as well. While the number of groups coming to New- port Beach is increasing, the groups arc sending fewer repre· sentativcs than in past years. The 1995 calendar is fill ing up with organizations coming from ns far off as New Jersey to as close as San Diego. "When I'm out traveling , I hear so many positive comments about how welJ people are treated," \Vil· Iiams said. "So many people don't realize the impon:ince of the dol- lars that visitors leave here. That translates to services \\e receive from the city." FEES Fre• Pe9e I mum fee of $200. "It's cheap compared to other cities," Genas said. "Some cities require a minimum fee of a couple hundred dollars, which is our max- imum." But, Mayor Joe Erickson on Tuesday cautioned against hiking the fees beyond the current maxi· mum, saying the low fees arc-part of what makes Costa Mesa "an at- tractive pl:ice" to do business in. "I don't think increasing our business licensing fees would be advantageous to the city right now," he said. "When you look at the benefit of large businesses, they bring employment to the community. They also collect sales tax. And in our city, the sales tax makes up for a huge portion of our budget." Genis said she hopes the council will begin "outlining some of the parameters" for a new fee scale within the next few months. mQE ........ , high school, a teen-age ritual they v.onder about.
