With two budgets to worry about -yours and Washington's, it's a double challenge to get o~t of the red by the 21st Century. , • Meanwhile, we"re beset with Qur usual 'vorries; downsizing, pollution, taxes, Cat-intake, the Disease-of-the-We ck, and earthquakes. While our panic buttons are buzzing more frequently these days, fear not, folks! Scientists have made a remarkable discovery that fear and its social signals are an important part of our . biological equipment in warning us QC potential danger. Nancy Mcintyre 59 a11d Holding This vital service is housed in an almond-shaped structure near' the base of the brain with the disarmingly sweet name of i\mygdala. At first glance one might take this insignificant little device as a memory box for old jokes. But it's a unique telepathic link be.tween mind and body that triggers a series of warnings from quaking knees and rapid heartbeats to a variety of tense facial c.~ressio~s -·especially familiar to every marriage, where looks speak louder than words. The bored, glassy-eyed stare, punctuated by heavy sighs, is a favorite signal by husbands for the little v.oman to change the subject of her home decorating crisis to a more critical catastrophe such as the baseball strike. Now that we know the bored stare 1s a constructive warning from our Amygdalas that prevent serious vocal confrontations, it's more acceptable. The same can be said for another marital classic: A wife's stoic expression of utter disbelief tbat makes a husband strive harder for a more plausible excuse for the lingerie charge on his credit card. When all else fails, wives depend on the hurt look: Eyebrows are tilted in a plaintive arc, lips trembling, and eyes welling up with tears. All guaranteed to make a man feel like a beast. It almost sounds like science fiction, but scientists learned that the patients they tested with impaired Amygdalas, had lost their ability to recognize fear or anger in people's faces. An inspired qualification for an Internal Revenue Service auditor. One patient revealed she couldn't tell if someone was looking at her or not. Without eye contact she felt uncomfortable. That's a Cr4stration every wife can relate to, even with a healthy Amygdala. Despile their fimiLations, all the patients were able to recognize the bright smiles and twinkJing eyes of happiness. Obviously this emotion is sending iLS rosy l>ignal~ from another part of the body. That old joker, Mother Nature, has probably hidden it in some ridiculous place like the belly button. "pples Donald Dodge'' s apple trees flourished in the area and so did his courtroom career P rize-winning apples from Costa Mesa? Where are they now? Around 1912, Donald Newport Beach/Costa M-Dally Piiot Dodge arrived in Costa Mesa and set out y9ung apple trees on his 20 acres on Center Street near today's Anaheim and Plumer streets. His trees flourished and began to bear excellent fruit, which won prizes at the state fair year after year. H is neighbors also planted trees and in 1921 they organized into Donal~ J. Dodge's famous apples on exhibit at the state fair. Costa Mesa Apple Growers' Association and built a packing house and a cider mill for their bountiful crop. Costa Mesa apples were becoming known throughout Southern California. Then a change in climate occurred. The winters became warmer, and the trees, without the necessary chining needed, began to produce scantier crops until 1924, when the orchards, diminished by warm winters and insect pests, disappeared entirely. The change in the weather has been attributed to factors as diverse as El Nino, which warms the waters of the ocean and volcanic ash in the stratosphere d ue to eruptions in Java and South America. Whatever it was, in a space of a few years, the climate simply changed to the point where the apple varieties grt:>wn here could not adjust. Donald Dodge adjusted very well. He was justice of the peace and served in that capacity for 20 years before his election to the newly created Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Municipal Court, whose design and construction he engineered. He was also a 20-year member of the Newport Harbor Union H igh Sc;hool Board of Trustees and was one of the creators of the Orange Coast College District. Judge Dodge died in 197J at the age of 83, leaving a son, two daughters, 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, as well as memories of his famous apple orchard in Costa Mesa. I've met one l.iell-groomed gentleman .dozens of times, but we've never exchanged more than basic pleasantries. If he weren't accompaqied by his vivacious wife, who's a headline figure, I'd never recognize him. He's probably not boring, if he can be engaged in conversation, but it's tough to find an opening that isn't weather-oriented. At a dinner party the Qther • night, I met'a couple who talked only rn Computerese. • Cyberspeak, I think it's called. Anyway, after a few bumpy miles along the information superhighway, I was frantically look.ing for the nearest off-ramp. Was everyone at the table bored? Apparently not. One guest said, "We must exchange ideas like th is more often ." One man's ennui is another man's network. In retrospect, the most crashing bore in the grpup must've been me. More than a dozen years ago, I wrote about a non-organization called the Dull Men's Club of Newport Beach. It seemed non-in teresting, so 1 expressed a desire to join. Hahl In the next day's mail, there was a ~uric letter from lumberman Steve Freeman, rincluding this sentiment "We don't want any members. . . None! I'll give you no address, not even a P.O. box. Let your readers join the Optimists, the Pessimists the Knights of O'Hoolihan, but for (bleep's) sake, let us atone." With my curiosity thus honed to razor.sharp edge, 1 did some research on the subject. One of the backgrounders wa~ a piece in The Daily Pilot, written by then:staffer Michael Pnskcvlch, who noted that "the typical member thinks 'menage a trois' is a French pastry, and 'Gucci' is something you say when you tickle a baby under the chin." Paskavich further noted that members of the Dull Men's Club of Newport Beach have marriages, not relationships, and drink beer, not Perrier. further researcJl unearthed another document, author unknown, with these revelations: "By no means is the Dull Men's Club a socio-economic group. We are, in fact, made up of millionaires and bums -and are, in fact, a true microcosm of Newport Beach. Perhaps 90 or 95 percent of the local yokelry qualify even if unknowingly." Well, I seem to be drifting here. The question atop today's trea\ise asked if 1 could identify our county's inost boring people, and here 1 am in the middle of a seance devoted to the Dull Men's Club. The two are not necessarily compatible. Dullards are bland, but bores can be stupefyingly intense, an wilOes:; those Cyberspace cadets. Also, bores are predictable. P.ush the y.irong button, and they'!' prate without pau,e. You can leave their monologues in mid-sentence, return a half-hour later, and they'll never know you left the room. Caution: When cornered by a "bore, never nod affirmatively, as though in agr~cmenl. Also, refrain from making any noises thut can be interpreted as sounds of encouragement. (fapecialt¥, never interrupt with (eeble · racks. Dores are humorles ·can recall one inclden hen I looked at my wristwatch and mumbled, "Oops, it's tin'le to rotate my tires." He · said that's a good idea, and kept right on talking.) Just thinking about world-class bores i.n our midst is making my ·eyes glaze, but the inevitable ~houldn't be postponed. In one of my farewell columns, I'll probably nominate the biggest bore of 'em all. Fir~t. though, let's go and lie down for a\\hilc. Even curmudgeons need their rest. Yawn ... Co-curated with her husband ~obert Rickerson, who teaches ex- hibition design, "The Greek Lega- cy" opens today in the OCC gal-· lery and continues through April 20. Two years in the making and culled from 18 private lenders in Greece and the United States, the exhibit features more than 150 pieces ft<fm the late 1700s to early 1900s. . "I was trying to have a cross section of follc Greek art -such as silver work, textiles, costumes, jewelry," Vallera-Rickerson said. She began her search by fuming to her family and people she knows in Athens. Then she pur- sued Greeks currently living in Southern California -and was overwhelmed. "The Greek community is very enthusiastic about this show. I had no one say no, which was remark· able because I didn't know every- one. I found out there is so much more available, but we don't have space." • Because of OCC gallery's lim- ited space, some pieces will be on view March 14 through June 10 at the Decorative Arts Center in San Juan Capistrano. - Besides space constraints, VaJJe- ra-Rickerson turned away more pieces because they would require additional pages -and print.ing costs -in the catalogue ac- companying the exhibit. There arc already 130 pages iind 58 color plates in the book. "My goal is to fihd a publisher because· Greek folk art is disap- pearing," Vallera-Rickerson said. "It's so important to me. We need to know our past." Those who enter OCC gaJJery may fee l they've been transported back to the past. "We'll create al- most a Greek market look," she said. "The floor wiJJ look like a dirt walk. I want to create an envi- ronment, not a sterile gallery set,- I ' ' . ting." Vallera-Rickcrson, who is in her fifth full year as an OCC faculty member, said she's received tre- mendous support on campus - from students on up to President David Grartt -and off campus from gallery patrons. "Every time I do a project here, I've always found people wiJJing to help us. I think the support for art is something that ~s not well publi- cized. My students arc very sup- portive." But not all are rich, and the en- deavor has been expensive. A se- ries of events are scheduled to help defray exhibition costs. "Folk art is very much of the people, for the people," Vallera- Rickerson said. "It's emotion." • -TAI PREPAUTION HOME OFFICE SALE!
