Sentencing is set for April 28. Sharon Petrosino, Laudenback's court-appointed attorney, lefi with her client and his family out a back door to the courtroom. Reached at her home. Laudcnback's aunt, Jackie Jefferies, said she was angry for sneers he r family got from some of Jaeger's friends ..and family during the week-long trial. "It's just a sad day," Jeffecies said. "Tyler's gone. Brian's gone. And there are two families in a lot of pain." Laudenback wasn't able to post 5250,000 bail and Brian Laudenback remai ned in jail during his grandfathe r's funeral la!.t year,. Jefferies said earlier. Other· fa mily members, she said on Thur)Jay, may die before Laudenback is released. During the tri.al, jurors we re told that 22-month- old Tyler Jaeger's heart wasn't beating when he was carried by Laudcnback into Hoag Hospital on March 25, 1994. Experts said the toddlers condition was bro ught on by severe bleeding from ruptured abdominal organs. But, during the trial, Petrosino contended that Tyler died from brain swelling caused by skuU frac- ture the toddler suffered a week before his death. The internal injuries were ca used by Laudenback's ill-fated CPR attempt, she told the jury during clos- ing arguments on Tuesday. That theory, Deputy District Attorney David Brent said after hearing the verdicts, simply didn't fly with the jury. "Bad CPR just doesn't do those injuries," he said, adding he sti ll doesn't know what would prompt Laudenback to beat Tyle r. "The problem for the prosecution in this case is that Mr. Laudenback doesn't look like a child beat- er," Brent said, adding that's why he stressed Lau- denback's admission that he spanked Tyler and caused the child's buttocks to bruise. "l think it was very important that the jury know that he caused an injury that was out of character for him." That reputation was well known in the 29th Street neighborhood. SCHOOLDAYS American heroes pay Visit to Adams Elementary ADAMS ELEMENTARY American heroes were seen at Adams school this month. During two patriotic fl ag deck ceremonies presented by the second and fifth grades, the following patriots were seen: Second grader Jonathan Kao (Abraham Lincoln) and fifth graders Jason Richter (Abraham Lincoln), Robert Williams (George Washington), Lorcal Pulllzzi (Susan B. Anthony), and Clif'f'ord Grove (Paul Revere). Students from each grade level spoke about famous Americans, recited poems and sang patriotic songs. The annual stude'nt awards ceremony for the DAR (Daughters of '}he American Revolution) was held Feb. 22. The award is gi ven to fifth grade students who have demonstrated excellence in American History lessons. The two Adams School students were Paola Rivera (Mrs. Pollock's class) and Hanl Charczaie (Miss Murphy's class). The girls received a medal, a certificate and an A01erican flag. Adams School had a very educational assembly this month on sharks. The presentation was from Ocean Adventures with Mr. & Mrs. Brown. Aaron VanGeem, a student in Mrs. Pollock's class, said the best part of the show was when the shark popped out. (The program ended with a blow-up replica of a grca1 white shark. The students thought the speakers had a tank with a shark inside but when the lid was flipped open a full-size great white shark blew up right in front of everyone's eyes.) All the students at Adams had the opportunity to learn about being successful through a musical program, "Kids Sing for Success" presented by Opera Pacific and paid for by the Bank of California. Sea Kings rally, 2-2 · COST A MESA -The Estancia Hig~ baseball team broke in to the victory column for the first time Thursday, according to Coach Paul Troxel, defeating visiting Artesia, 5-1, for the Eagles' first victory of the season. The Newport Elks Tournament win came behind the strong pitching of starter Orlando Vega, who wotked into the sixth inning in his first varsity start, allowing two singles and three walks, while striking out two. CORONA DEL MAR -It may have ended in a 2·2 tie againl>t visit- ing Foothill in the Newport Elks Tournament, but Corona del Mar Coach . J.t>e Koh regarded Thursday'. game a~ a series of mis~ed op- portunities. ''We had our chances,'' Koh undersiated after the Sea Kir1g.s were forced to settle for the deadlock. Reliever Jose C-abrera entered in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and none out to try to protect a 3-0 lead. Cabrera fanned the first hitter he faced, then picked off the runner at first. Only an error ~ted him from escaping the inning unscathed. -'. The Eagles {1-2) opened the scoring when Rocky Schipf- elbein rocketed a solo homer to right-center field in the bottom of the second inning. Estancia added two more in the fourth inning when Galvin Yanagisawa squeezed home two runs on a bunt- and-run play. However, the baserunner slipped rounding third, and by the time he got up and made his way toward home, the throw was waiting for him. Just to add to the frustration, anoth~r CdM player was thrown out at lhe plate later in the inning after Chad Johnson had singled to center. "I think that one play really picked us up, not only today, but gave us a lift for the season," said Troxel. "We've been a little bit lackadaisical so far."
