Bv TINA BORGATI'A, STAFF Wurn COST A MESA -Dirty jokes and disparaging remarks abdut women were commonplace within the Mesa Consolidated Water Dis- trict, say four former employees of the agency. "That kind of stuff happe11ed all the time," said Dede Olivares, a former meter reader who left the district five years ago. "Some of the jokes were posted, like in the engineers' offices." Olivares said ttie frequently overheard many of the supervisors "calling women bitches," among other offensive names. But, what's even worse was the treatment Olivares and the other women say they received from male su£ervisors. That s what prompted one woman to file.a lawsuit, another to file a grievance and Olivares to take a $600-a-month pay cut and move· to central California. A fourth woman is still brought to tears when she recounts her expe- rience as a merer reader, even though it's been seven years since she left. "After you get beat up enough and told you're nothing, you start believing 1t," Olivares said. All four women said they re- ported these problems to agency administrators but no disciplinary action was ever raken against their bosses. And they said they believe the agency's board of directors was never informed of their com- plaints. The allegations of sex discrimi- nation and harassment within the district surfaced last week, after Deirdre Dembik -who filed the grievance in November of 1993 - told the board she was frustrated by delays in resolving her com- plaint. Bv EVAN H tNEllSON, SrArr \\'1UT1:a NEWPORT BEACH -Pro- posed increases in landfill tipping fees, a consequence Jf the Orange County bankruptcy, could take a serious bite ou t of the Newport Beach city general fund. In an effort to make up for bankruptcy-depleted revenues the county is considering raising land· fill tipping fees (or gate fees) from $22.75 to $35 per ton of refuse dumped at county l:indlilli.. Cou- pled with this proposal is a plan to import trash from Los Angeles and San Diego counties to Orange County landfills, thereby bringing in more revenue whale abo reduc- ing the life of county landfilh. Cities have dodged a tipping fee increase for the past three years, but with the county facing massive revenue shortfalls due to im.est· ment loi.scs, city General Services Director Da' id Niederhaus i.aid that an increase '' Js logical and overdue. ''The fee has been artificially low fo r SC\Cr..11 )ears," Nicderhau~ said. "NO\\ the county is under :id- dition.il pres..,urc to raise the rate by a much highe r amount." But Newport Beach is the only city in the county which docs not charge ats re sidents for trash ser- \ice. Any trash-related fee in · crease, therefore, comes out of the city's general fund. That's when Olympic high-diving legend Pat McCormick drew a star-studded crowd, assembled to applaud her donation of gold medaJs to the Orange COunty Sports Hall of Fame. "If our county treasury would have received that much gold," opined one observers "we'd be out of bankruptcy." Pat wasn't interested In politicians who've gone off the deep end and are now treading waters praying for rescue. Her sole concern is with her Huntiniton Beach-based Educattonal Foundation, dedicated to helping troubled kids get back into the swim. As fund-raisers go, this was in a class by itself. For a relatively small donation, admirers could mingle with such mighty Olympians as Dr. Sammy Lee, Vi cky Draves and Rafer Johnson, and·on~timc Rams heroes Vince ·Ferragamo and Jack Snow. And for comedy relief, incongruQusly enough, there was wise-cracking Mr. Blackwell whose tell-all tome, "From Rags to Bitches," will soon hit the bookstores. His only association with sports, so far as I could determine, was his colorful coat -as resplendent as any raiment ever to adorn a Kentucky Derby winner. This was my first tour of our county's Sports Hall of Fame and It's well worth the visit. Every Orange-flavored jock in represented in pix and plaques. There's one lam~ntable omission, but I hesitate to ·mention it. In those storied halls and walls, one cannot find a paddle used in the 1937 Southeastern Pennsylvania RcgionaJ Table Tennis Championship Tournament. Thanks to' that magic paddle, its wielder (modesty forbids publishing.his name) nearly made it to the quarterfinals. One of the items available at a silent auction was the No. 11 jersey worn by Jim Everett during his tenure as the Rams' quarterback. From a fund-raising standpoint, it ranked right up there with that overlooked ping-pong paddle. I wanted to bid on a rare item, but it wasn't for sale. It was a newsreel film 'headlined, "The Flying Mermaids," featuring McCormick and her teammat~s. One of the svelte beauties was Lucllle Unkiewlc2 of Chicago, perhaps better known here as Unk Mathewson of Harbor Island. She declined to repeat the diving feat for Saturday's assemblage, saying she'd just as · soort jump headfirst from "3 three-story building onto a wet postage stamp. 0 MAJOR LEAGUE REPLACEMENTS -There's been a change in the lineup for The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation awards banquet, sched\lled April 29 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
