By Barry Faulkner, Staff Writer COSTA MESA • ll was nothing the Laguna Beach High softball team said or did that trig- gered Costa Mesa High's emphati c 16-2 victo- ry Thursday at the Mustangs' diamond. The Artists just happe ned to be next in line, following Mesa's disappointing 7-3 loss to Laguna Hills Tuesday in a first-place Pacific Coast League showdown. "The girls came back determined after the Laguna Hills game, H said Mesa Coach Rick Buonarigo. HThey just don't like losing, so they were really ready to play hard today." The Artists (6-10-2, 1-4 in league), includ- ing a handful of players who played with the Mustangs' summer league team, battled Mesa (15-5, 5-1) in their tint PCL meeting, before falling, 3-1. But they couldn't match the hosts' intensity, despite taking a 1-0 lead. J es~ica Roche tripled lo open the game and scorec! on a single two outs later to further infuriate the hosts, who rapped out 13 hits, stole seven bases, benefited from 13 Laguna errors, and led, 14-1, after four frames. Sonia Correa a little seasoning. "Sonia needed the innings," said Buonari- go, who summoned the right fielder to replace starter Niki Montgomery to start the fifth. "Nild (who struck out five and surrendered just four hits to earn her 12th victory in 17 decisions) has been pitching so well lately, Sonia hasn't had much of a chance." "We've been scoring runs like crazy this year,• said Buonarigo, whose squad upped its season total to 146, an average of 7.3 per out- ing. ~we've had three big losses this year (Laguna Hills and two tournament champi- onship games) and we've come back to ham.- mer our next opponent every time,• Buonari- go added.
