Believe it or not. Mother's Day weekend got even better than this for the e timated 5,000 people who came together on the grounds of the Hyatt Newporter this past weekend for the Newport Beach Jazz Festival. Amid the aforementioned setting, the mellow, racially diverse ,crowd was treated to trumpeter Wallace Roney picking up where the late - and greatest -Miles Davis left off; keyboardist extraordi- naire Jeff Lorber and his band funkin' up the joint; and hometown hero Eric Marlen- tbal blowing some of the meanest saxophone on the planet. With apologies to Big Band aficionados -Hello! Can you say Rendezvous Ballroom? - the event managed to touch on several shades of jazz. Besides Roney's quintet, Saturday featured: ever-popu- lar tusioruneisters The Yellow- jackets; the multi-talented Everette Harpi the salsa-fla- vored Susie Hansen Latin Jazz Band and Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Ensemble; certified jazz alJ-star AJphonse Mouzon and his All-Star Band (includ- "' Chick Corea was among those performing at the festival. . . ing area players Brandon Fields on sax and Grant Geiss- man on guitar); and the future of jazz, the award-wmrung, 21-piece Fullerton College Jazz Band. H owever, junior will prob- ably end up an acs:oun- tant by the time he can add up the e xpenses of a family. By Evan Henerson, Staff Writer N ine out of 10 UFO sightings prove to be explainable, says Jan Hanan, director of inves- tigations and a board member of the Orange County Mutual UFO Net- work JMUFON). It's· a statistic that Hanan recounts early and returns to periodically during the courss of an interview. Orange County MUFON, the five- month-old branch of a 5,000-member international organization, provides a forum through which people can recount their experiences with the unexplainable and be taken seriously, administrators claim. I · "I'd say our goals are to recognize that the phenomenon is real and to use the technology of our research for peace- ful pui:poses," said Hanan, a sales man- ager at IBM. "When people come for- ward and report incidents to the police or lo newspapers, they're told that this sort of thing is not in their jurisdiction. They get pushed from site to site to site." • The board members, who assemble at OC MUFON's Via Lido office in Newport Beach, are a diverse group. In adclition to Hanan, there is Dena South, a recent retiree from McDonnell Douglas wh9 publishes the MUFON newsletter and works on the organization's database project. Dr. Bob Wood, the organization's director of research, is another McDon- nell Douglas employee who first began UFO research at his company's direction 27 years ago. Publicist Debbie Stock is a photojournalist who, like the other mem- bers, shares an interest in the phenome- non. The state sections director is Dr. Deb- orah Truncale, a licensed psychologist and ordained minister who founded and directs the Human Horizons Institute. Like the people who call in to the MUFON hotline, Trunca.le, South and Hanan each say they have had encoun- ters with UFO's -some more than onoe. Stock and Wood have never experi- enced a sighting, but are committed to the research and to the idea of providing an open forum for discussion. Some of th~ sightings that are called into the hotline are easily explained. Others go into a database or are assigrted a field investigator. Since open- ing the hotline five months ago, MUFON officials say that the number of calls have been slim, a fact board members say is not surprising since the group has not been actively soliciting calls. Ten percent of sightings are never reported, Harzan says. Which is not to say that Orange County is UFO-free. Board members dis- play a map of sightings in Orange Coun- ty complete with colored push-pins rep- resenting the area of the sighting and the type of encounter. The map is for historical interest more than anything else. Each sighting occurred prior to 1987, well before OC MUFON was even in existence. Avail- able evidence for these incidents has long since dried up, making it impossible for investigators to make any progress, according to Hanan. MI guess the hotbed of UFO activity now is Mexico,~ Harzan said, "But it's a worldwide phenomenon.~ N S C ENE The group holds monthly meetings and regular forums with featured guest speakers. Members or.interested resi- dents can report !>ightings or obtain information about upcoming events by calling 520-4UFO. Since the media has historically taken a tabloid-style approach to UFO covera·ge, MUFON board members say they understand skepticism from people who learn about the group. They point out, however, that MUFON takes a scientific and research-oriented a pproach to the study of UFOs. With a membership of more than 5,000, MUFON is one of the world's largest and most reputable UFO- charting organizations. And whatever else they accomplish, MUFON members say they hope to get .government officials to make public "confidential" reports on flight crafts and weapons development -lflfonnation that might ultimately explain· several sightings. "That's the tone we need lo take - explcUning the unexplainable,• said Truncale. ·we can't stop trying to put the puzzle together." Critics accuse grandparents of buying love. The project could lose up to $110,000. TWo low-income housing pro- grams also will lose a slice of the Community Development Block Grants they were allocated last month, if council members approve one of three options included in the funding plan. Up to $140,000 could be yanked from the budgets of the pro- grams, which give grants and loans to improve decaying homes. Officials from the Youth Employment Service of the Har- bor Area estimate they help some 750 low-income youth from Costa Mesa with their job searches, including referrals and skills training, according to the city report. A little more than half the teens served by YES, as the group is known, are from Costa Mesa. Still unclear is whether the city will loan the money to YES offi- cials or if they will buy the build- ing and lease it back to the group. That decision will be made sepa- rate from the budget vote.
