And Leonard Davenport -aJong with experts from the Department of Fish and Game -is concerned . "They used to say that you could walk on top of the water from the mainland all the way to Catalina, they (the white seabass) were so thick in the water,· said Davenport, a Whittier resident who was born and raised in Orange County. I remind myself of all the sue· cessful sailors who have passed through Marina Sailing instruc· tion since it opened in 1989. All I have to do is keep calm, do my homework and pay attention, and I will be able to sail a 28-foot boat as-easily as I drive my car. I'm a tenible driver. Al, who co·owns Marina SaiJ. ing with his wife Naomi, has taught sailing classes for years. Besides teaching futroductory dasses, they also offer a wide variety of advanced classes and rent boats, from a Udo 14 to a Columbia 56. Al shows us how to raise the jib and the mainsail. Bearded and wiry, he rrioves about the boat languidly. His calm voice almost works on me. But then: is that metal bar thing attached to the mast (fit- tingly called a boom) going to hit me in the head? While I wony, Anthony, who owns a.car maintenance shop fu Costa Mesa, eagerly liteers us out of the dock. ' ~-------------------------~ ' : Local racers come home with the Cal Cup, and the cash L ocal residents Kirk Good· ing, Steve Shaw, Mike Sttu· man, Dave Swain and Dave Ullman came home with a lit· tle more than just a trophy last weekend whe n they won the prestigious California Cup, an invitation-only reqatta that annu- ally boasts the best sailors from every class. This year, the firsl- place winners came home with $.5 ,000 in prize money, making the quest for first definitely more important. The California Cup, common· ly known as the Cal Cup, began its illustrious career as a highly sought·after regatta back in 1963 when the format was match rac· ing. Yachts such as the famous 12·Meters were the choice of the regatta, seeing top ·noteh racing America's Cup Jtyle. A few years back, the format changed to fleet racing, allowing more boats on the line as at Olympic regattas, with the yacht of choice switching to the strong Californi· afleet of ULDB 70s. The Cal Cup remained a Sled regatta up until this year, when another switch was made to the current hot class, the Melges 24 . Since boats are not supplied for BOA TIN G ' stephanie keefe the regatta, the switch tO the Mel9es 24 made it more afford~ able for the sailors to charter boats . ..µso, because the Melges is more of a dinghy as opposed to a big boat, it allows every type of sailor to jump in and sdil compet· itively it with more ease. Thirteen crews competed for this year's Cal Cup, with the liSt induding National Champions, Obwic Medggs, Mighty Mary 'team members, Olympic hope· fuls, and world champions in their reSpective fleets. The amazin_g compo!ition of the fleet left many questions as to who would win. Friday saw practice races fQr the competitors. The race com· mittee ran 1/2 mile courses, col· legiate·style, with many practice starts~ to get the sailors used to the powered·up Malger. A shifty 8· 10 knots prevailed throughout the series, finding the entire fleet rail·biking the whole time. Between Saturday and Sunday. ~ven races were run, with one throw out. T he series unfolded as expected, with the lead always changing through· out the race and with finishes all within a boat·length. Even com· ing down to thejlast race, it w as pre tty much any man's race. Though most of the competitors bad at le&st one double·digit race, Ullman, Stephen Grillon, Joe Landrigan and Star gold medalist Mark Reynolds remained unscathed with scores under 10. Ullman and Grillon were tied for first, with Loudrig· an and Reynolds right behind them. After doing circles at the start, Ullman and team went left with Grillon going right. Ullman and Grillon met at the weather mark, both in the top four. An intense jibing duel began down· wind, with the two never further apart than a couple of boat lengths. The second leg saw more breeze fill in, with Ullman outlasting Grillon upwind, gain· ing distance on him. Their sepa· ration increased throughout the next two legs, allowing Ullman and crew to put three points on Grillon and win the regatta. With Ullman steering, Sturman calling tactics, Swain and Gooding trimming, and Shaw doing bow and pit, the crew sailed an incredi· bly consistent ~atta, with no fin- ish worse than sixth. Sailing on the third Melges ever built, the crew seemed right at home and proved it by their top finishes. Said Stwman of the regatta, "It was great. A great time, incredi· ble boats. SHE.JS_ The Argus, a 68-foot topsail ketch owned and maintained by the Boy Scouts of America. Docked al the Sea Scout Base in Newport Beach, the Argus is available for scout excursions. GLOBE TROTTER Built in Marstal, Denmark in 1908, the Argus spent her early years transporting cargo, such as cement and grain. She passed through a number of Swedish and Danish hands before Tucker Thompson purchased her in 1968. Thompson docked her in Hadsund. Derunark. and moved his family aboard. After rerigging her, the Thompsons left Denmark on JWle 1, 1969, sailing the Argus to Ger- many, England, France, the Canary Islands, Panama. Costa Rica and eventually California. She arrived in Newport Beach on June 1, 1970, one year after leaving Derunark. Thompson and . his family then left her behind at the Sea Base while they rontin- 1 ued their adventures. Ever since Thompson donated the Argus to the Boy Scouts of America in 1972, she has been used to train scouts in the hmda- mentals of sailing. A MOVING CLASSROOM The sea base operates pro- grams aimed at teaching the basics of sailing, canoeing, rowing and other skills lo scouts and oth- er youths. By Richard Dunn, Staff Writer NEWPORT BEACH -Though Morgan Anderson of Newport Har- bor High and his South All-Star part- ner, Los Amigos' Matt Stafford, defeated their North opponents in match play (plus-2) Thursday in the annual Orange County All-Star Golf Match al Newport Beach Country Club, the elements weren't exactly ideal. Cue in polnl: When Anderson was preparing to tee off on bole No. 3, one of his North competitors moved diriK.1ly lri back ol him before his doWnswtng. "What school are you from?" Etiquette on the golf course appar- . ently was not a prerequisite for merit- ing a berth ln the all-star match. which was won by the South, 18-6. Anderson, who finished with a 5- over-par 76, beating bls opponent (Sunny Hills' Jenny Lee) by four strokes, or plus-2, was. unaffected by the distractions. Following a good drive down the middle, Anderson left bls second shot about 12 feet from the pin, before dropping in a short birdie putt. Anderson, who had 11 pars, made another birdie on bole No. 15, when he got on the green in two, f olloWing a 250-ya.rd fairway shot. He missed four other birdie putts. induding a ringer on 17 from about 12 feet. Anderson. who was 2-over 38 on the back nine, recovered from a dou- ble-bogey on 14 with a birdie on the next hole. He used a driver on bls first two shots. then a good first putt left him 1-foot short of the cup. Anderson had no trepidation about going against the only female in the tournament. '' •• • FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 1915 For Estancia's girls it was a year to remeillber, and a year to learn fro •In almost every instance, it seemed, the Eagles were in a battle for third place, with championship runs sea.tee. By Barry Faulkner, Staff Writer COSTA MESA -The postseason precipice proved to be a popular place for the best of Estancia High's girls athletic teams from the 1994-95 school year. After third-place Pacific Coast League playoff games left Coach Kenny Keup's volleyball team, and Coach Jenny Tavares' soccer squad just shy of securing a CIF playoff bid, a similar fate appeared to have befallen Russ Davis' basketball team, after it lost a third-place tie-breaker to Laguna Hills. But, following three downcast days before the CIF pairings were announced, the Eagles' basketball fortunes turned around quicker than you could say reverse pivot. Not only did Estancia earn an at-large berth, it gained what many considered to be the "back-door" No. 4 seed in the Division ID-A brack~t. facing actual fourth-seed John Glenn in the first round. As if that weren't enough, Davis managed to rmagle a home game out of · the deal, after Glenn's gym had already been allocated to host a .clF wrestling meet. The tum of events set the stage for a lopsided 66-23 victory, which turned out to be the school's lpne postseason girls team victory of the 94-95 school year, when Pioneer pulled the plug with a 45-38 second-round triumph. The Eagles' tennis team, the school's only other playoff qualifier, was eliminated in the first round of the Division II playoffs. While there were no team championships to celebrate, strong individual performances biY three-sport standout Cyndi Richards and senior track and field star Laura Petrina captured Daily Pilot headlines. Richards, whose career was beset by a series of injuries, including near-fatal · car accident, earned All-PCL honors in volleyball and basketball, and ptayed in two Orange County all-star basketball games. . She will continue playing basketball next year at Yavapai Junior College in Arizona, which awarded her a partial scholarship she turned heads with a tryout. Petnna, earned one silver and two bronze medals at league finals, advancing to the CIF Division lil preliminaries in the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter dash. Another developing Story involved the Eagles soccer resiliency, as the team failed to earn a victory in its first 13 matches, but tumect it on to contend for a playoff berth down to the aforementioned third-place playoff. Here's a sport-by-sport 'rundown: 0 Basketball: In addition to the aforementioned CIF playoff opportunity, a highlight had to be the Eagles' sweep of cross-town rival Costa Mesa to claim the perpetual Lady Bell Trophy, as well as the corresponding team rib dinner. Junior point guard Jessica Waltz led a veteran group by earning All-Newport-Mesa Dist rict honors, as well as first-team All-PCL laurels, while seniors CY'Qdi Richards, Karla Dominguez and Meghan Noland also provided strong leadership. 0 Soccer: After an 0-9-1 nonleague campaign, the Eagles opened PCL play 0·1-2. But they refused to fly the white flag. Thr~ straight wins propelled the squad into playoff contention, but another slight fade in the final weeks set their lejigue record at 5-3-2, leaving them dead!ocked in·third with Aliso Niguel. Handicapped by the loss of three key pJay~rs, who picked up red-card ejections µt the final regular-season game, the Eagles fell to Aliso Niguel, 1-0, in the third-place playoff at Corona del Mar High, ending their season. Junior Christin~ Dahle earned her second straight first-team All-PCL selection, while seniors Alyson Denton • and Holly 'Ferguson, the latter the team scoring leader, also made the first team after second-team recognition as juniors. Senior Amy Jacobson joined sophomores Erin Bergman a.Qd Jennifer Brunick as second-team all-leaguers, while juniors Whitney Gilliam and Natalie Rainey received honorable mention. Another highlight was a pair of decisive victories (3-0 and 2-0) over Costa Mesa. 0 Tennis: Coach Chris Hastings' group posted a 6-4 league record, good for third place and a spot in the ClF Division II playoffs. Their reward, however, was a 14-4 loss to third-seed and Sunset League champion Los Alamitos. which finalized their overall record at 10-8. Though playing host to the individual league finals, a few first-round victories were the extent of Estancia's success. Camella Jaeger defeated Laguna Beach's Courtney McMahon, 6-1. 6-2. in the opening round, but was eliminated in the second round by the Artists' top-seeded Michelle Bray, 6-3, 6-3 .. Whitney Gilliam defeated Costa Mesa's Krista Tool in the first rourid, but Jell to Mariko Takano froJn University, 6-4, 6-4, in second-round of singles actio.n. Kathleen Kan1er also reached the second round, while the Eagles' top doubles duo of Leslie Najarian and Natalie Rainey did the same, falling to a Laguna Beach tandem to end their run. 0 Volleyball: Keup, whose two-year tenure enl1_e9 yhen he resigned after the season.Ta"w a second-stJ;aight third-place playoff match end in five-game frustration, as Laguna Hills earned a 11-15, 15-4, 7-15, 15-4, 15-13 triumph one year after Trabuco Hills defeated the Eagles in a similar CIP I playoff qualifying match, •1 guess it wasn't meant to be,• said Keup, who will be replaced by Estancia hoys coach Dave Castle, who elected to double his coaching chores this spring. Outside hitter Cyndi Richards was a first-team all-league selection, while 6-0 sophomore middle blocker Joanna Fielder garnered honorable mention. Junior setter Christine Dahle, who administered 39'assists in tb,e Laguna Hills playoff match, figures ro be another top returner next fall. The team finished With a 6-9 record. a Cross country: Coach Charlie Appell guided the squad to a fourth-place finish at league finals, led by sophomore Tanya Perkins, who finished sixth individually among PCL competitors in 19:58. Junior Araceli (11th in 20:08), and the sophomore trio of Vicki Palayo (17th, 20:43), Katie Wehr (31st, 22:06) and Paula Shinners (35th. 22:59) rounded out the scorihg contingent. Estancia's 100 points at league finals were 25 be hind third-place Universi!Y. 0 Trac}< and field: Laura Petrina capped her prep career with the aforementioned success. She posted her season-best of ~5-7 in the Jong jump at league prelims and was only three-quarters of an inch off that in the final, finishing second. Her third-place triple jump of 32-8 1/4 was a personal best, while h er PR in the 100 hurdles was 16.3. She was third in the hurdles at league finals (16.9). The team did not fare as well, losing all seven dual meets, including five against PCL foes. 0 Softball: First-year coacb Sharon Smyth recruited a few more players, but the rebu.il.diRg continues, after the squad went 4-16 overall, 0-1 in league. Sophomore pitcher Jill Black posted a 1.32 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 104 innings to join freshman shortstop Stephanie Serr on the All-Newport-Mesa District team. Black, a first-team all-league pick, also hit .357 and her 12 RBJ trailed only Se rr (13). Serr, a second-ted.m all-leaguer, batted .407 with one homer and a team-leading nine RBI and her defense at short was an island of consistency. . 0 Swimming: Coach John Carpenter's Eagles defeated Laguna Beach, 83-62, in the regular-season finale to finish with d 3-7 overall mark. Senior Maria Uceda was the lone championship finalist at the PCL Finals, earning fifth place (1:08.72) in the 100-yard butterlly. Senior Heidi Fassnacht was the consolation champion (ninth overall) in the 100 backstroke (1:12.35), while Aileen Bennett was 10th in the 200 freestyle.
