If you believ'e the gener- alizations cast upon the two pro- fessions, you might say they are at opposite ends of the career spectrum. Dr. Mitchell is aware of the peculiarity of a Duke and Har- vard educated doctor, who once served as the Chief Resident at USC's Childrens Hospital, now selling Chryslers for the Atlas Auto Dealership in Costa Mesa. But when you step back and think about it, what a perfect combination -if people trusted him with their lives. wouldn't you trust him to sell you a car? I must ad.mil that its appearana:; is somewhat forbidding -eight snakes held together by a body that looks for all the world like a big bulb in which there are two hooded, malevolent eyes. Howev- er, the octopus is really a rather shy, retiring creature that asks only to be left alone. When I was a youngster in Bal- boa there was supposed to be a giant octopus at the end or the jetty just waiting to grab off an unwary fisherman. We urchins never went to the end of the jetty. Then there was the huge octo- pus in the hulk of a wrecked sail- ing vessel that lay in the channel entrance. We swam in that hulk because the water m there was always warm. Then the authorities blew it up a.nd the story emerged that in that hulk they found a 25- foot octopus. Of course the story was pure fiction, but not to those of us who had braved the creature all those years. Fable aside, my own experience with octopus has been pleasant. although I must admit that an abortive attempt to spear a reaJ monster on the isld.nd of Saipan during World War a scared the liv- ing bejesus out of me. As a youngster we caught octo- pus on the mud flats. Unless pollu- tion has killed them off they should still abound in the Upper Bay. Catching an octopus bn the mud flats is simplicity itself. The basketball championship, won in dramatic fashion, 47-46, over St. Bernard at UCl's Bren Events Center, so uplifted some CdM students, they surged over a courtside table to share the moment with the CdM players, who themselves were anxious to accept the fruits ~f victory from their peers. Such scenes of elation, however, were few and far between for CdM, a school which typically hangs CIF championship banners with greater annual frequency than it distributes report cards. The basketball season wasn't the lone highlight, of course, with league team titles accrued in water polo and cross country and an individual CJP title claimed by badminton singles standout Jerome Poyyak, who led his team to an unbeaten regular season. But the football team's insplrlng run to a CIF Division V playoff berth ended in a first-round defeat, and the water polo team, ranked No. 1 in CIP DMsion I and Orange County for much of the year, saw a 9·7 lead submerged in a 10·9 CIF title-game loss to familiar rival Long Beach Wilson.
