A TREE-MENDOUS TOUCH Family dedicates plaque, plants trees during me!llorial for deceased relatives at Canyon Community Park By Laurie Busby, Staff Writer en Esther Salit died ast month at the age · f 88, her sister, Shirley Bass, 85, couldn't make the trip out to Iowa for her burial: Bass's daughter, Judy Hub- bard, oi Costa Mesa, promised her mpther they would do something in her aunt's mem- ory. . H At the time I didn't have a clue what it would be," Hub- bard said. "But I knew we would do something." On Sunday morning, Hub- bard made good on that promise. In a small ceremony at Canyon Community Park, Hubbard and the rest of her immediate family dedicated 20 trees and a plaque in honor of Hubbard's grandparents, her aunt and uncle and her mother and father. Hubbard wrote and illus- trated the program, which consisted of her own writings, a number of readings from Jewish prayer books and a story by columnist Ellen Goodman on her own aging aunt. One story, from the Talmud, was about a man named Honi who would not go to greet the Messiah uilW he finished · planting his tree -as his ancestors have done over the years for their children to have shade and a place to play. "So we do this for each oth- er and we do it for future gen- erations," Hubbard said. "She and her sister-this is the first time they've been separated in 80 years, since they came from Russia together." Bass and Salit traveled . from Russia with their mother in 1914 to join their father, who bad left ahead of them and settled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The sisters lived in Iowa unW about three years ago, when they moved to Heritage Pointe retirement center in Mission Viejo. "The winters in Iowa had just gotten to be too much," Hubbard said. Now, with the planting of these trees, Bass has a special place to pay her respects to her all her relatives. "She'll go regularly," Hub- bard said. And so will Hubbard and her husband, Ben, who live a short walk away on Park View Circle. "It is a place for us to go and a place that's living - that's surviving and thriving,· Judy Hubbard said . "I'm not big on graveyards. I didn't want it to be a depressing thing -I wanted it to be about things coming full cir- cle." The family, which donated about $1;000 for the trees and paid for the city-ordered plaque, said they were very grateful for the help the city provided. "The city was super- responsive and cooperative. There was no red tape," Ben Hubbard said. "If anyone says city and government is always slow, sluggish and inefficient, I'm here to say it's not always that way." • SEE TREES PAGE 4 . . Wayte organized this fund· raiser designed to buy a new kiln for the art department. Stu- dents decorated a total of 162 tiles using ocean motifs. In mid- April, the tiles were installed on a school wall with the theme "Harbor View's Window to the Sea," created by second-grader As hley Hyte r. "It all confirmed my feeling that the parents of Harbor View are supportive of their school and if there is a need, we find a way to fulfill it," said Wayte, who coordinated the project with art specialists Nancy Snell and Debi Haymond. Wayte far underestimated her goal to sell just 52 of the 8- inch square tiles at $30 each. Lnstead, parents sold 152 tiles, pulling in a bout $3,000 - en ough to buy a new kiln and other art supplies for the school.
